I’ve always been afraid of running. I can walk a lot but running made me anxious. I started a few days ago and just jogged. From 1km running without a break to running ( jogging) for 5kms. I am sooo proud of myself. And I feel like crying . I know is it’s not that big of an achievement but for me it is. 🥹💃

Training Progress Back in January I had a concerning Doctors Visit about my weight and health. I started running shortly after and recently hit some runs I felt very good about.

I'm still in the obese category according to BMI (which may be skewed since I used to Powerlift years ago), but I'm feeling better than I have in a long time. I'm down 25lbs, looking to lose another 25. When I started out I told myself my goal was to get under a 10 minute mile and under a 30 minute 5k. I finally got both of them this week (I've been under a 10 minute mile for awhile but the 5k took longer to get). I am running anywhere between 15-25 miles a week and I am doing a good mix of speed training and long distance easy runs. Hoping to continue this progress. Next goal is a 25 minute 5k, which I'm anticipating will take a lot longer to get.

New Runner Advice My first run after 6 yrs

I am 26, gained so much weight (weight - 90kgs, height - 169cm). I have a running exam in December for my job. I have to run 1600mtrs under 6.5 mins. Is it possible? Also I have one important question as well. Shall I do run 2 times a day? One in morning which is more intense and short span of 2kms and a long run in evening. I really want to be fit and qualify the physical test for my job. Any suggestions will be welcome. Also I wasn't able to run continuously. I had to take break and then walk litle and then again run and same. I really want to improve health. Any suggestions are welcome 🙏

Recovery My first run after letting myself go for 2 years!

Post image

I finally started running again and just getting fit again after 2 years of my worst mental health.

For 2 years I have been letting myself go, always making excuses on why I cant go to the gym or why I cant go outside and run and just straight up eating junk food over and over again, because I just wasn’t mentally okay at that time and i made myself go from 155lbs to 220lbs as 5’6 Male.

I am so glad to finally have been able to go run at least a mile even though I was suffering and my legs were burning I am just so proud of myself for even just running a mile even though my pace isn’t how it used to be, I am so proud of myself!

Training Help Is this a reasonable long run?

I’m 6 weeks out from my first marathon and at the point where every long run is my farthest run ever. I’ve been using Runna for my training plan and I’m wondering if this long run is too intense? Or maybe I’m just nervous. Thanks!

Training Progress New 5k PR surprised me

Pictures show my previous PRs

Yesterday i ran a 23:29 5K, and i can’t believe how quickly i got here. I attempted my first 5k run on June 30th, and got a 30:49. Was super happy with that as my goal for this autumn was a sub 30 run.

I then didn’t run at all for pretty much the entirety of July, but I did a lot of long mountain hikes. I did however attempt a 5k again on July 17th. On a track this time to see how that felt and got a 27:43. This kind of blew me away

On August 1st I decided to actually start running twice a week. I did a couple of 10k runs where I didn’t pace myself well enough but still got a 1:01 on my first attempt. I then attempted a 10k on the track on August 10th, where I got a 54:28, AND a 26:05 5K pr for the last 5k in that session.

This made me think I could actually run a sub 25 5k if I did a proper attempt, so yesterday I went to a 600m long dirt path that is pretty flat and gave it my max effort that I felt I could sustain for 5km straight, and I got a 23:29.

I’m super happy, but I’m honestly surprised I’ve gone down 7 minutes in two months, especially when I’ve only been running properly for the last 4-5 weeks.

I have another 10-15kg to lose (91kg atm), so now I’m super excited to see how my running performance will improve after the weight loss and a few more months of running.

I’m definitely hooked now

Hi, all. I have just quit smoking (around 2 weeks ago) and have recently decided to take up running - only been out on 5 runs so far and have clocked the following run today. Is this a good pace at all? As I have no clue 😁

New Runner Advice Make sure to properly fuel before/during/after runs!

I ran 7 miles for the first time last Saturday and on Monday was feeling unusually tired/weak and achy. Looked it up and realized that I didn’t properly fuel before or after my run. I definitely needed more carbs and electrolytes/hydration. I didn’t know that runners flu was a thing but that’s exactly what I had done to myself. I was feeling flulike symptoms all Monday into the evening. I should have done better fueling. Let my mistake be your lesson!

New Runner Advice Transition from biking to running readiness checks

Upvotes

Hi all -- I currently do stationary bike sessions 3-4 times a week, 20-25 minutes each time, at a decent resistance level. I'd like to start transitioning away from biking to running, but am worried about the fact that running is a bit tougher on joints / bones etc. What are some good thresholds for joint / bone strength before transitioning? For instance, I figure being able to stand on one leg for 2 minutes is a good bone strength check, but am not sure what good joint strength checks would be. Perhaps being able to do X number of lunges? Thoughts? I'm in my mid-30s, 19.2 BMI

Discussion Sick of strava

This probably happens to other people too, but strava seems to disconnect quite a bit when I'm running, I don't have a watch so I just keep my phone in my pocket. I don't know if that affects the GPS or not. So I'm just looking for other alternative apps or just get a watch. If so , what type I have an android

New Runner Advice Beginner runner looking for road running shoes, how do you choose the right ones?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ve recently started running and I’m really enjoying it so far. I’m currently around 95kg and started with slow running/jogging for about 20 minutes.

After roughly a week, I’ve managed to work my way up to around 6.5km in 58 minutes, and my time seems to be slowly coming down, which is pretty motivating! 😅

Now I’m thinking I should probably invest in a proper pair of running shoes.

I’m based in the UK and I’ll mainly be running on roads/pavements.

My budget is around £100 maximum.

The problem is… I have absolutely no idea how people choose running shoes. 😂

- How do I know what type of shoe is suitable for me?
- Does my weight make a difference to what I should look for?
- Is more cushioning necessarily better?
- Are there any particular shoes you’d recommend around £50–£150?

I’m not looking for anything fancy or racing-focused just a comfortable, reliable pair for regular road running while I build up my distance.

Would really appreciate any advice or recommendations from more experienced runners. 👟🏃‍♂️

Thank

Training Help Help with child running plan

My son, a 10 year old, is REALLY into running. He came out of the womb running, we like to say. Friends and teammates call him "Sonic". He can sprint fast but also has great endurance.

I started running a year ago for my own health (39/f) and my kids started running with me. We did couch to 5k and ran 3 races in that time and he's done the best in the family and has medaled at all of the races.

His current goal is to get the world record for his age in 5k. Do I think he can actually do this? Maybe?! Probably not. But I still think it's a great goal and want to encourage him. Everyone in our family holds him back with we run 😅 so I'm here to ask for help/direction/ resources where I can look for a running plan for him. He told me initially he's just going to increase distance every week but I told him that's not sustainable and also I have learned in this group it seems like it is usually a combo of strength training, easy, and long runs. Not just tons of long runs. But I don't know. Please educate me!

He said he needs to get working on it because once puberty hits the times to beat get even faster, of course.

Thanks for any tips or resources.

Also will take any advice on good running shoes for kids.

New Runner Advice Garmin Suggested "Sprint" Workout

Upvotes

I just finished an 8 week 5K improvement plan from runna. I really enjoyed the varying workouts (intervals, easy base run, tempo, etc). During that time I saw a bunch of people saying they just use Garmin's suggested daily workout and was interested in trying it out.

Today I tried out Garmin's suggested daily workout which was supposed to be a "sprint" workout. Looking at it, warmup at 149bpm, then 10seconds full out sprint followed by 3mins "recovery" (down to 118bpm). do that 8 times, then a 10 min cool down.

This is much different than the workouts I've received from Runna. Example most track workouts from runna maybe had 1;30 or at most 2:00 walking rest after a fast pace of 400/600/800/or 1000m distance. I sprinted as hard as i could for the 10 seconds, but it really felt like a short amount of time with a really long rest. At the end of the workout the watch reported back to me and said the main effect was "Base" 😂

Tomorrow it has scheduled 2x3x0:15 all out... I'm still relatively new to runningish, but I'm just not really sure I'm seeing the stimulus for these or maybe I'm just doing it wrong? Any suggestions from people who may have done both runna and garmin on which they ended up seeing more benefit from or any other insights? Thanks

Discussion Been noticing people taking creatine for running. What's the purpose? Is it for muscle damage and soreness? Pros cons?

Lately I've been noticing more and more runners talking about creatine. I always thought it was something only gym people take, like people trying to build muscle or lift heavier. But now I see runners bringing it up too, so I'm kinda curious.

What does it actually do for running? Is it for recovery?like reducing muscle damage and soreness after long runs? Or does it actually help performance during the run itself?
