Or get me to run doubles. Or maybe log each interval as a separate workout?

But probably kill me!

Training Progress Anyone else run Ballona Creek?

Finally got around to running Ballona Creek Bike Path this weekend. Solid paved trail, no cars, super easy pace.

Pro tip: go before 8am. After that the bikers take over and it gets chaotic.

What’s your go-to running spot around LA?

At what point are you no longer a beginner?

I started running what feels like forever ago, but I guess looking back is only dec 2024… have I graduated?

Also how are we planning our year out? I’d like to get my mileage up all year but it seems to cycle? Is this normal? I guess I’m just wondering how to optimise and prioidize.

should I go running or give upp

Upvotes

i signed myself up for a 10k run, it's on 20th sept💔 and the max i hv ran is 5.5k. YA IK it's nearly not enough.

but i thought if I sign up for it I will get motivation to start running again. and by AGAIN i mean, i haven't run a single km in the past 3 months 😞

sooo should I start running from today? it's 5:30 am rn and I have got class at 8:30🥀 and i didn't get a blink of sleep tonight.

also i hv got asthma so the thought of starting again is ending me.😞

Training Progress Ran my first 8km

I started running at the start of the year, and running was to be my 2026 goal. Just wanted to say that I ran 8km for the first time, in one go, no stopping on Sunday. 6'42" average pace, not easy for someone who couldn't run more than two minutes straight in December. I had to take some time off in June/July/Aug due to an extended illness, which set me back a lot. I'm a shift worker who does 12 on/2-3 off, often with 4-5 hours sleep.

Not sure what my next goal will be! I love reading all these inspirational posts on here, just keep going!!

Injury Prevention 4 years of shin splints. Please help

I am training to join either the fire department, police department, or military. I can perform in all aspects of fitness, but with running I can only run a little while until I get shin splints. I have been dealing with them, then I get discouraged from running, then they heal, and I pick it up months later. This has been a 4 year cycle.

Last Monday I decided to fully commit. I bought some recommended ASICS from Fleet Feet, I have been stretching my shins and tibials, I’ve been doing calf raises and tibialis raises, and I feel like I’m ready but I am starting to feel discouraged again by sudden discomfort in my shins.

With some research, I’m starting to think it might be my form that’s causing this.

Is there any crucial advice from experienced runners that helped with your form? I’m confused what I’m supposed to do because many YouTube videos and references on Google are inconsistent.

Discussion Sick of strava

This probably happens to other people too, but strava seems to disconnect quite a bit when I'm running, I don't have a watch so I just keep my phone in my pocket. I don't know if that affects the GPS or not. So I'm just looking for other alternative apps or just get a watch. If so , what type I have an android

New Runner Advice Runnr Shorts Avoid!!

Upvotes

Avoid Runnr shorts. They have the worst costumer’s service. It not an easy 30 money back. They come from china and are cheaply made. If you try to contact them it’s all AI.

Since I was stuck with my mistake. I thought to give them a try. First run they felt a little restrictive and had to adjust. Second run something in the back developed a hot spot.

Oh if you did want to return them you have to pay for shipping back to china. Which cost more than the shorts.

I see them advertising all over facebook and Instagram. They look cool and sound innovative. But just a big scam. Stick with name brand or Amazon.

Training Progress running in september

made a little 30 day running thing for myself this september, distance goes up and down the whole month

got back from vacation a bit heavier than id like lol, so figured id build something to get moving again instead of just going for the same run every day. some days short, some days longer, keeps it from feeling like a chore

made a strava club if anyone wants to join in, no pressure, just show up when you can

Pacing Tips What songs should I listen to pace-wise when I run?

Hello! I will preface I am new to this whole running thing. I’m only really getting into it so I can complete my mile for my JROTC pft in the spring (our fall one I walked/jogged it with a Junior and kept my pace to hers and completed with a 16.01).

That being said, my mom has recommended I find my running pace and listen to music that has the same pace/tempo. Ideas? Genres? And how could I also find my running pace?

New Runner Advice Make sure to properly fuel before/during/after runs!

I ran 7 miles for the first time last Saturday and on Monday was feeling unusually tired/weak and achy. Looked it up and realized that I didn’t properly fuel before or after my run. I definitely needed more carbs and electrolytes/hydration. I didn’t know that runners flu was a thing but that’s exactly what I had done to myself. I was feeling flulike symptoms all Monday into the evening. I should have done better fueling. Let my mistake be your lesson!

First official half marathon

Post image
Upvotes

Finished my first official race half marathon over the weekend. I started running regularly around 5 months ago, tempo runs usually sit around 5:30-6 pace so holding this race pace really pushed my limits but so happy with the time. Need to build in a lot more strength training as I feel my legs are holding back what by cardiovascular system can handle. Do any of you weight train legs or have any tips in this area?

Training Progress New 5k PR surprised me

Pictures show my previous PRs

Yesterday i ran a 23:29 5K, and i can’t believe how quickly i got here. I attempted my first 5k run on June 30th, and got a 30:49. Was super happy with that as my goal for this autumn was a sub 30 run.

I then didn’t run at all for pretty much the entirety of July, but I did a lot of long mountain hikes. I did however attempt a 5k again on July 17th. On a track this time to see how that felt and got a 27:43. This kind of blew me away

On August 1st I decided to actually start running twice a week. I did a couple of 10k runs where I didn’t pace myself well enough but still got a 1:01 on my first attempt. I then attempted a 10k on the track on August 10th, where I got a 54:28, AND a 26:05 5K pr for the last 5k in that session.

This made me think I could actually run a sub 25 5k if I did a proper attempt, so yesterday I went to a 600m long dirt path that is pretty flat and gave it my max effort that I felt I could sustain for 5km straight, and I got a 23:29.

I’m super happy, but I’m honestly surprised I’ve gone down 7 minutes in two months, especially when I’ve only been running properly for the last 4-5 weeks.

I have another 10-15kg to lose (91kg atm), so now I’m super excited to see how my running performance will improve after the weight loss and a few more months of running.

I’m definitely hooked now

Training Help Help with child running plan

My son, a 10 year old, is REALLY into running. He came out of the womb running, we like to say. Friends and teammates call him "Sonic". He can sprint fast but also has great endurance.

I started running a year ago for my own health (39/f) and my kids started running with me. We did couch to 5k and ran 3 races in that time and he's done the best in the family and has medaled at all of the races.

His current goal is to get the world record for his age in 5k. Do I think he can actually do this? Maybe?! Probably not. But I still think it's a great goal and want to encourage him. Everyone in our family holds him back with we run 😅 so I'm here to ask for help/direction/ resources where I can look for a running plan for him. He told me initially he's just going to increase distance every week but I told him that's not sustainable and also I have learned in this group it seems like it is usually a combo of strength training, easy, and long runs. Not just tons of long runs. But I don't know. Please educate me!

He said he needs to get working on it because once puberty hits the times to beat get even faster, of course.

Thanks for any tips or resources.

Also will take any advice on good running shoes for kids.

New Runner Advice How to start running

Hello, I came here for advice, how do I get into running. All my life I’ve been active, mainly dancing, gym, yoga. For the past year I’ve lost focus not only in exercise, but also diet, and I’ve gained a lot of weight (85kg, I’m female). Recently I’ve been having really weird urges to just get up and start running, but I’m afraid it might not be really healthy for me. I’m afraid all that excess weight will damage my joints and knees and anything else that has to carry those kilograms. So I wanted to ask more experienced people, how to do it without discouraging or hurting myself, cause I really just want to enjoy running :\^)

Recovery My first run after letting myself go for 2 years!

Post image
203 Upvotes

I finally started running again and just getting fit again after 2 years of my worst mental health.

For 2 years I have been letting myself go, always making excuses on why I cant go to the gym or why I cant go outside and run and just straight up eating junk food over and over again, because I just wasn’t mentally okay at that time and i made myself go from 155lbs to 220lbs as 5’6 Male.

I am so glad to finally have been able to go run at least a mile even though I was suffering and my legs were burning I am just so proud of myself for even just running a mile even though my pace isn’t how it used to be, I am so proud of myself!

Recovery Am I rushing my recovery process for my knee?

hi everyone,

I’ve been dealing with knee pain on my right side for about a month now. I’ce always been an athlete, but I am new to the running game. I’ve been slowly training for a half marathon, which was set for October in Long Beach, CA. unfortunately, ive decided not to continue that training due to the following injuries:

- right knee pain on top cusp of knee cap.

- bottom edge of heel and sometimes Achilles heel pain here and there.

the knee cap pain has been more familiar as I started to feel that when I began running 8 miles. I assumed I progressively overloaded a little too fast. I took a week off, from running, never had knee pain when doing my daily activities, felt fine, and came back to running (kept it light under 3 miles) only to feel that pain come back at mile 2. I stopped again, and this time began to shift my training into recovery.

i prioritized hips, glutes, quads, everything that a runner is supposed to do. throughout this process, I would only run every other day, up to 2 miles as a light jog. Mon, Wed, and Fri were strength days for legs or upper body.

I feel like I’ve been doing everything correctly, and now, I have annoying knee pain on the daily. it doesn’t really go away it’s just kind of there. the last 4 days, I started feeling discomfort at the bottom edge of my heel and sometimes leading into the Achilles.

I just want someone to tell me what I am doing wrong? I’ve been so careful to recover and progress, I really care about my health. point is, I’m going to the doctors this Wednesday.… I wonder too if I put too much weight on my knee to strengthen it but instead it’s too much and too early.

Thank you for reading this, may we all live healthy ! 🫂🙏🏽

Training Help Help me start intervals?

Hi everyone, I started running regularly earlier this year and recently made my goal of running 5k. I had to take a couple of months off due to a work situation, but I'm back to it again now. My current time for a 5k is about 33 minutes; on a normal run, I've been going for 37 minutes (so 5k and some change). I'd really really like to get under 30 minutes as my 5k time, but I'm not sure how best to approach that. I've seen people say, "to run faster, run longer" and of course I'll do that, continuing to extend the overall time. But what about interval training? Unfortunately I don't live near a track or area with measured distances, so I'd have to rely on "speed run for xxx amount of time then drop to regular pace for xxx amount of time" but I'm not sure how to start doing that.

Can anyone recommend a timed (not distance) interval regimen to start? How many should I do total per run? For how long? Should it be part of a longer period of running? How many times per week? (I'm running now about 3x/week.)

Thank you in advance!

Training Help Is this a reasonable long run?

I’m 6 weeks out from my first marathon and at the point where every long run is my farthest run ever. I’ve been using Runna for my training plan and I’m wondering if this long run is too intense? Or maybe I’m just nervous. Thanks!

New Runner Advice Transition from biking to running readiness checks

Hi all -- I currently do stationary bike sessions 3-4 times a week, 20-25 minutes each time, at a decent resistance level. I'd like to start transitioning away from biking to running, but am worried about the fact that running is a bit tougher on joints / bones etc. What are some good thresholds for joint / bone strength before transitioning? For instance, I figure being able to stand on one leg for 2 minutes is a good bone strength check, but am not sure what good joint strength checks would be. Perhaps being able to do X number of lunges? Thoughts? I'm in my mid-30s, 19.2 BMI
