Recovery My first run after letting myself go for 2 years!

Post image

I finally started running again and just getting fit again after 2 years of my worst mental health.

For 2 years I have been letting myself go, always making excuses on why I cant go to the gym or why I cant go outside and run and just straight up eating junk food over and over again, because I just wasn’t mentally okay at that time and i made myself go from 155lbs to 220lbs as 5’6 Male.

I am so glad to finally have been able to go run at least a mile even though I was suffering and my legs were burning I am just so proud of myself for even just running a mile even though my pace isn’t how it used to be, I am so proud of myself!

I’ve always been afraid of running. I can walk a lot but running made me anxious. I started a few days ago and just jogged. From 1km running without a break to running ( jogging) for 5kms. I am sooo proud of myself. And I feel like crying . I know is it’s not that big of an achievement but for me it is. 🥹💃

Training Progress New 5k PR surprised me

Pictures show my previous PRs

Yesterday i ran a 23:29 5K, and i can’t believe how quickly i got here. I attempted my first 5k run on June 30th, and got a 30:49. Was super happy with that as my goal for this autumn was a sub 30 run.

I then didn’t run at all for pretty much the entirety of July, but I did a lot of long mountain hikes. I did however attempt a 5k again on July 17th. On a track this time to see how that felt and got a 27:43. This kind of blew me away

On August 1st I decided to actually start running twice a week. I did a couple of 10k runs where I didn’t pace myself well enough but still got a 1:01 on my first attempt. I then attempted a 10k on the track on August 10th, where I got a 54:28, AND a 26:05 5K pr for the last 5k in that session.

This made me think I could actually run a sub 25 5k if I did a proper attempt, so yesterday I went to a 600m long dirt path that is pretty flat and gave it my max effort that I felt I could sustain for 5km straight, and I got a 23:29.

I’m super happy, but I’m honestly surprised I’ve gone down 7 minutes in two months, especially when I’ve only been running properly for the last 4-5 weeks.

I have another 10-15kg to lose (91kg atm), so now I’m super excited to see how my running performance will improve after the weight loss and a few more months of running.

I’m definitely hooked now

Training Progress Back in January I had a concerning Doctors Visit about my weight and health. I started running shortly after and recently hit some runs I felt very good about.

I'm still in the obese category according to BMI (which may be skewed since I used to Powerlift years ago), but I'm feeling better than I have in a long time. I'm down 25lbs, looking to lose another 25. When I started out I told myself my goal was to get under a 10 minute mile and under a 30 minute 5k. I finally got both of them this week (I've been under a 10 minute mile for awhile but the 5k took longer to get). I am running anywhere between 15-25 miles a week and I am doing a good mix of speed training and long distance easy runs. Hoping to continue this progress. Next goal is a 25 minute 5k, which I'm anticipating will take a lot longer to get.

New Runner Advice My first run after 6 yrs

I am 26, gained so much weight (weight - 90kgs, height - 169cm). I have a running exam in December for my job. I have to run 1600mtrs under 6.5 mins. Is it possible? Also I have one important question as well. Shall I do run 2 times a day? One in morning which is more intense and short span of 2kms and a long run in evening. I really want to be fit and qualify the physical test for my job. Any suggestions will be welcome. Also I wasn't able to run continuously. I had to take break and then walk litle and then again run and same. I really want to improve health. Any suggestions are welcome 🙏

First official half marathon

Post image
Upvotes

Finished my first official race half marathon over the weekend. I started running regularly around 5 months ago, tempo runs usually sit around 5:30-6 pace so holding this race pace really pushed my limits but so happy with the time. Need to build in a lot more strength training as I feel my legs are holding back what by cardiovascular system can handle. Do any of you weight train legs or have any tips in this area?

Hi, all. I have just quit smoking (around 2 weeks ago) and have recently decided to take up running - only been out on 5 runs so far and have clocked the following run today. Is this a good pace at all? As I have no clue 😁

Training Help Is this a reasonable long run?

I’m 6 weeks out from my first marathon and at the point where every long run is my farthest run ever. I’ve been using Runna for my training plan and I’m wondering if this long run is too intense? Or maybe I’m just nervous. Thanks!

Training Help Help with child running plan

My son, a 10 year old, is REALLY into running. He came out of the womb running, we like to say. Friends and teammates call him "Sonic". He can sprint fast but also has great endurance.

I started running a year ago for my own health (39/f) and my kids started running with me. We did couch to 5k and ran 3 races in that time and he's done the best in the family and has medaled at all of the races.

His current goal is to get the world record for his age in 5k. Do I think he can actually do this? Maybe?! Probably not. But I still think it's a great goal and want to encourage him. Everyone in our family holds him back with we run 😅 so I'm here to ask for help/direction/ resources where I can look for a running plan for him. He told me initially he's just going to increase distance every week but I told him that's not sustainable and also I have learned in this group it seems like it is usually a combo of strength training, easy, and long runs. Not just tons of long runs. But I don't know. Please educate me!

He said he needs to get working on it because once puberty hits the times to beat get even faster, of course.

Thanks for any tips or resources.

Also will take any advice on good running shoes for kids.

New Runner Advice Make sure to properly fuel before/during/after runs!

I ran 7 miles for the first time last Saturday and on Monday was feeling unusually tired/weak and achy. Looked it up and realized that I didn’t properly fuel before or after my run. I definitely needed more carbs and electrolytes/hydration. I didn’t know that runners flu was a thing but that’s exactly what I had done to myself. I was feeling flulike symptoms all Monday into the evening. I should have done better fueling. Let my mistake be your lesson!

Training Progress Ran my first 8km

I started running at the start of the year, and running was to be my 2026 goal. Just wanted to say that I ran 8km for the first time, in one go, no stopping on Sunday. 6'42" average pace, not easy for someone who couldn't run more than two minutes straight in December. I had to take some time off in June/July/Aug due to an extended illness, which set me back a lot. I'm a shift worker who does 12 on/2-3 off, often with 4-5 hours sleep.

Not sure what my next goal will be! I love reading all these inspirational posts on here, just keep going!!

Injury Prevention 4 years of shin splints. Please help

I am training to join either the fire department, police department, or military. I can perform in all aspects of fitness, but with running I can only run a little while until I get shin splints. I have been dealing with them, then I get discouraged from running, then they heal, and I pick it up months later. This has been a 4 year cycle.

Last Monday I decided to fully commit. I bought some recommended ASICS from Fleet Feet, I have been stretching my shins and tibials, I’ve been doing calf raises and tibialis raises, and I feel like I’m ready but I am starting to feel discouraged again by sudden discomfort in my shins.

With some research, I’m starting to think it might be my form that’s causing this.

Is there any crucial advice from experienced runners that helped with your form? I’m confused what I’m supposed to do because many YouTube videos and references on Google are inconsistent.

New Runner Advice Marathon training and I'm gaining weight.

I'm running for my first marathon in December and before this, I have no running experience. I've always heard that a lot of running injuries are due to poor fueling and rest and so as I ramp up my mileage to 50km a week, I am determined not to get any injuries so I eat more than what I usually eat! I have gained around 3kg in the last 3 months and I was wondering if this is typical for marathon training or if I'm possibly overeating?

Pacing Tips What songs should I listen to pace-wise when I run?

Hello! I will preface I am new to this whole running thing. I’m only really getting into it so I can complete my mile for my JROTC pft in the spring (our fall one I walked/jogged it with a Junior and kept my pace to hers and completed with a 16.01).

That being said, my mom has recommended I find my running pace and listen to music that has the same pace/tempo. Ideas? Genres? And how could I also find my running pace?

Discussion Learning how to run and lift

Upvotes

Hello, this is my first time doing something like this, so if anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it!

I want to start running and lifting to lose fat and build muscle, but I just don't know how to begin. I tried to do some research, but it got very overwhelming. They talked about isometrics, plyometrics, stretching, and dynamic stretching. Not only that, but they also mentioned workout splits specific for new runners and lifters, as well as different types of exercises. It is all completely new to me.

Also, I have really bad mobility with my ankles and hip flexors. For example, my inner thighs are super tight when I try to squat, and I can barely touch my toes. It's very embarrassing, and I feel like my body is in horrible shape.

If anyone can help me, I would truly appreciate it. If there are any questions you have for me, please ask! 🙏

New Runner Advice Transition from biking to running readiness checks

Hi all -- I currently do stationary bike sessions 3-4 times a week, 20-25 minutes each time, at a decent resistance level. I'd like to start transitioning away from biking to running, but am worried about the fact that running is a bit tougher on joints / bones etc. What are some good thresholds for joint / bone strength before transitioning? For instance, I figure being able to stand on one leg for 2 minutes is a good bone strength check, but am not sure what good joint strength checks would be. Perhaps being able to do X number of lunges? Thoughts? I'm in my mid-30s, 19.2 BMI

Training Help Help me start intervals?

Hi everyone, I started running regularly earlier this year and recently made my goal of running 5k. I had to take a couple of months off due to a work situation, but I'm back to it again now. My current time for a 5k is about 33 minutes; on a normal run, I've been going for 37 minutes (so 5k and some change). I'd really really like to get under 30 minutes as my 5k time, but I'm not sure how best to approach that. I've seen people say, "to run faster, run longer" and of course I'll do that, continuing to extend the overall time. But what about interval training? Unfortunately I don't live near a track or area with measured distances, so I'd have to rely on "speed run for xxx amount of time then drop to regular pace for xxx amount of time" but I'm not sure how to start doing that.

Can anyone recommend a timed (not distance) interval regimen to start? How many should I do total per run? For how long? Should it be part of a longer period of running? How many times per week? (I'm running now about 3x/week.)

Thank you in advance!

New Runner Advice Staying Motivated

Hello Runners :)

I am somewhat new to running and have signed up for the Manchester marathon as its something i've always wanted to do and it will help me get fit again. I am using Runna to build my plan.

For reference, I have always been sporty but since getting an office job, wanting to do anything when I get home after a commute has been a challenge and due to this I have gain some weight and lost lots of motivation.

So my question is - How do you stay motivated? What drives you to get out on a run after work?

Thanks so much !
