In light of all the bot spam we're introducing a new posting rule

Hi everyone! I know most of you have probably noticed the absolutely unrelenting bot posts lately. Myself and the other mods have been trying our best to remove those posts and ban the bot users, thanks to all your reports we have been doing an okay job of it until recently. The last few months these types of posts have been absolutely obnoxious, not just in our community but in many others, and we are having a hard time keeping up because we aren't bots but just a bunch of Samoyed lovers with families and other commitments :)

After talking to some regulars here and the other active moderator we have decided to try out implementing a minimum karma to post certain types of posts. Text posts will not be affected as we certainly always welcome discussion and questions in this community! We welcome your feedback and please continue reporting any suspicious posts and comments you see.

Thank you,

r/samoyeds Mod team

So I was lucky enough to get my puppy this past friday (4 days ago) from a friend who had two samoyeds that had a litter and wanted to find them good homes. This was the last one he had. (4 months old, 35lbs)

He had never been on a leash, in a crate, in a car, or around other dogs before. We picked him up and took him to the vet for all necessary shots, it took him about 5 mins to get used to being in the car and since then hes been perfect in the car. He likes to just lay down or sometimes sit up and look out the window.

"How is he with barking?" Veryyy rarely ever does. The only times he barks is when he wants pets or if he wants to go outside and he only barks a single time in those cases. Other than that he never ever barks at anyone or anything, even if other dogs are barking at him.

Hes only been in his crate with the door closed twice and he did exceptionally well both times. He loves hanging out in his crate when playing with his Kong toys and sometimes to sleep, but he prefers to sleep on the bed with people when it comes to sleeping.

He doesnt chew on anything at all either, except leaves sometimes when hes outside lol. Other than that He only chews on his toys. He has no interest in chewing on wires or blankets or tables or anything like that.

He is exceptionally calm around everyone and everything. He never jumps up on people except when he does it for a treat. As stated earlier, he doesnt bark at anyone or any other dogs, however he does want EVERYONE to acknowledge and pet him and he wants to be friends with every single animal he sees or encounters, especially cats and other dogs. Even his first vet visit he just stood and did whatever the vet needed, and afterward just calmly laid on the ground. As im writing this hes just laying down on the patio in front of me hanging out and being adorable lol.

I took him for lots of long walks, a few runs, a local event by an animal shelter where you can adopt animals or just bring your own dogs to meet other people and dogs and hangout. I took him to petsmart to get a brush, a good food, treats and a toy along with a kong harness and leash as well. Its definitely been a long weekend for him but hes been loving everything.

"Sounds almost too good to be true, what are the downsides" admittedly he has so perfect and amazing, especially for a puppy, that it shocks everyone who meets him. But there are two small things to work on.

1) hes not great at walking on the leash. He isnt bad per se, he gets in his harness easily and doesnt ever pull, but hes bad at walking in a straight line lol. He is always big zagging and accidentally walking into me which can certainly take some getting used to when going on long walks. However, hes still a puppy and had never been on a leash before, so im sure he will get better as time goes on and we train him more.

2) loneliness. Now this isnt really a downside necessarily, but even if you just leave the room to go to the bathroom quick, he will whine. Again though, thats not necessarily a downside in my opinion. Hes only a puppy, and hes a very social and incredibly affectionate dog. As he grows older im sure he will become more acclimated to being alone here and there for a few minutes. Again though, I dont mind and am more than happy to have him join me for everything possible so I dont foresee this being a problem, but thought I should mention it for those who read this and are contemplating on getting a samoyed.

All in all, hes an absolutely amazing puppy and a really really good boy. Hes incredibly calm and quiet while also being extremely affectionate and a great companion. Especially for a 4 month old puppy.

I feel like i could write several more paragraphs about how much I love him and how good he is, but ill cut it there lol.

If anyone has any comments, questions, tips on training or specific gear (such as a good harness brand, toy, etc) feel free to comment and I will answer anything im able to!

What it’s like being a very, very loved Samoyed

Hi. Angie here. I’m a Samoyed, which means I’m basically a fluffy white cloud with opinions, a smile, and a very important job: making my human completely obsessed with me. I am extremely good at my job.
She tells me I’m beautiful all the time. Not just when I’m freshly brushed or looking particularly majestic. I can be asleep in a weird position, have one ear folded funny, be staring into space, or just standing there doing absolutely nothing, and suddenly I hear: “Oh my god, look at her.” Yes. I know. I’m Angie.
One of her favorite things to do is smell me. She puts her whole face into my fur and takes a big breath like I am some kind of expensive perfume. My neck fluff, my head, my paws, my ears, everything. Apparently I smell amazing. And even when I don’t, she still thinks I smell amazing, because according to her I smell like me.
She even loves my stinky breath. Seriously. Sometimes I yawn directly in her face with the most questionable breath imaginable and instead of being disgusted, she laughs, kisses me and tells me how cute I am. I’m pretty sure I could smell like a swamp and she would still say, “That’s my baby.” This is the level of devotion I have achieved.
I also talk a lot, because Samoyeds are not meant to suffer in silence. Sometimes I woo. Sometimes I grumble. Sometimes I make tiny dramatic noises. Sometimes I have full conversations with her. She always answers. Neither of us knows exactly what the other one is saying, but somehow we understand each other anyway.
She also loves that I have opinions. I’m not stubborn. I just don’t believe every human request needs to be followed immediately. Sometimes I sit, sometimes I give paw, sometimes I speak, and sometimes I look at her, think about what she asked, and decide we should explore other options. She usually laughs. I think she secretly likes that I’m not a little robot.
I’m also very expressive. If I’m happy, my whole face smiles. If I’m excited, my entire body gets involved. If I’m offended, everyone will know. If I think something is suspicious, I will stare at it until the situation has been properly investigated.
And if my human is petting another dog, I may casually appear nearby. Not because I’m jealous. Obviously. I just like to make sure she remembers where her best fluffy girl is.
I’m also not the kind of dog who thinks every stranger is automatically my best friend. Yes, I am fluffy. Yes, I look like a smiling polar bear. No, that does not mean everyone gets unlimited access to the cloud. My human understands that. She lets me choose who I want to be close to, and I think that’s one of the reasons I trust her so much.
With her, I don’t have to do anything. I can just exist. I can sleep next to her, follow her around, lie somewhere and watch what she’s doing, lean against her, bring my fluffy face close enough for a kiss, or just be in the same room. And somehow, that is enough to make her happy.
Sometimes she buries her face in my neck and hugs me for a long time. I usually stay there. I know she likes it. Humans need comfort too.
I think she loves everything about me. My smile. My fluff. My little noises. My stubborn brain. My paws. My ears. My smell. My ridiculous sleeping positions. My personality. My stinky breath. Even the things that would probably annoy her in anyone else.
And I know I’m loved because she doesn’t just love me when I’m being cute or good. She loves me when I’m loud, when I’m stubborn, when I’m dramatic, when I’m sleepy, when I’m excited, and when I’m being a complete little Samoyed. She loves all of me.
Which is good, because I love her too. I just express it in my own Samoyed way: by following her around, talking to her, keeping an eye on everything she does, occasionally supervising her interactions with other dogs, and allowing her to bury her face in my fluff whenever she needs it.
Being someone’s soul dog is hard work. Luckily, I am excellent at it.

Becoming a Samoyed owner soon: advice

Hello! In December we will be welcoming our Samoyed puppy and we are already preparing as much as possible for when he arrives. We have some questions:

  1. Are there any books, podcasts or Instagram/Youtube trainers that really helped you specifically with this breed?

  2. Is there a grooming tool that you recommend? We need a high velocity waterdryer but I'm also seeing interesting comb + vacuum brushes online. Is there an all in one tool without spending hundreds of euro's? (so preferably available in the EU)

  3. What is the best way to diminish the fur that will be everywhere: what is the best routine of vacuum cleaning the house, brushing, special tools...?

All other advise is very welcome! We know this breed needs a lot of special attention but we can't wait to raise him.

Thank you :)!

Need a refresher…

Our 11yo Samoyed tragically and unexpectedly passed away to liver tumor. She lived a long and happy life, but we were nowhere near ready to loose her.

I feel like our family really needs another pet and we were lucky enough to secure one to join our house hold in mid October.

Problem is… we now have two Herz crazy boys. 3&7 yo. The older one was good with our previous dog and I trust that he will be very helpful with a puppy. My younger one on the other hand… he is very loud and crazy. Does not listen to directions and does what he wants. I’m worried about managing him around the puppy. Last thing I want is to raise a scared dog.

With our previous, we also got her at 5months, so we essentially skipped the baby puppy stage. This time the baby will be 8wks old.

Help! How do I train her with a crazy kid? Or how do I train a puppy?! I have no clue where to start, but want to make sure it’s the right decisio

Question about Hypoallergenic Breeds Similar to Samoyeds

Hello, I have a samoyed, but eventually I would want another dog when she starts getting elderly and needs some revitalization in her life. I would like something similar but different from a samoyed. However I do have dog allergies, but my samoyed has not made me allergic very much since I got her two years ago. Does anyone know if Swedish Lapphunds are also hypoallergenic just as Samoyeds? I know samoyeds aren’t completely hypoallergenic, but it has just been working for me. Please also list other spitz breeds that would be similar? Thanks!
