THE BEACHES
****************************************************

If you're a tourist in Sarasota, the beach is probably on your must do list. Like a lot of Florida, most of our beaches are on barrier islands (commonly referred to as keys). You have to drive over a bridge (hello traffic!) or stay on-island to get to them.

*** Beach Access ***

Here are the beaches you probably care about - they come with free public parking lots and public bathrooms.

These are their names and their free public parking lot addresses:

*there are a few others in Sarasota (like Turtle Beach, Whitney Beach, Palmer Point Beach) that have more limited parking for tourists to access by car.

Siesta is the largest Sarasota beach (with a long walk across the sand to get to the water). It's the busiest with the most events and activities, including volleyball, a Sunday night drum circle, an annual professional sandcastle competition, and it has the most tourist-related water activities available, like parasailing, stand up paddleboard, jet ski rentals, or whatever else you probably want.

South Lido has no food or drink stands whatsoever, unlike the other two Sarasota beach locations mentioned, which do. Near South Lido (but not at South Lido itself) you have some pretty epic kayak mangrove tours operating, where you might see wild manatees. Lido is generally quieter than Siesta.

During peak times, every one of the free public parking lots noted above will reach full capacity by mid morning, and its not unusual for it to then take an extra 30-70 minutes of circling (and circling, and then, more circling....) to find a parking spot. On occasion the parking lots are even closed off completely due to reaching max capacity. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Other ways to access the beaches:

* Public Access Points:
There are "public beach access points" on Siesta Key and Longboat Key where you can park. These tend to have less than a dozen parking spaces each (or none at all) and are usually just tiny little slivers of a road that lead to the beach. Don't expect to find a spot at any of them during peak times (though you could always get lucky).

* Paid Lots
There's only a handful of paid parking lots on Siesta, you really can't count on them for overflow availability, but they do exist.

* Metered Spots / Street-Side parking
There are various paid metered spots near the beach. They're common on Lido Key. Bring a beach cart and be prepared to walk if you go this route, and pay close attention to parking signs. (download the parking app). Lido also has a large parking garage that's beach-walkable, but it's more for St. Armand's than the beach, so factor in a walk.

* By Shuttle / Bus / Car Service
The Siesta Islander or Breeze Bus offer service to the beaches; Buses aren't known for being quick, but they are inexpensive. Lyft and Uber are available in Sarasota and will take you anywhere.

* Direct from your hotel
Loads of hotels and rentals are walking distance to the sand. You will of course pay a premium for this - but you'll also not have to mess with beach parking or traffic.

*** RED TIDE ***

Humans routinely pollute the Gulf and this in turn causes what's known as Red Tide. It happens most frequently when heavy rainfall pushes pollutants into the ocean. The result is a lot of dead fish and what looks like red seaweed washed up on the beach, accompanied by a nasty smell. The water color may also change to a lovely dirt brown. (It hasn't happened here recently, but that's no guarantee it won't come back)

Predicting red tide in advance is not part of any professional weather service. There are water quality and red-tide alert websites where you can check, but only for real-time conditions.

Red Tide is a 100% human-made phenomenon and it would be great if we stopped polluting the Gulf. Any U.S. State with a waterway that reaches the Gulf is part of the problem to varying degrees, it's not just Florida. As you might expect, fixing it is easier said than done, but if you want to join the fight, we'd love to have you (like most things, it starts by contacting the elected officials representing you)

*** OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURES ***

The ideal internal temperature of the human body lies somewhere around 98.6 F. Preferences and tolerances vary - just know that any water temperature below 70 starts putting you at risk of hypothermia. (This is because water absorbs your body heat roughly 20-25 times faster than air)

Large bodies of water take a very long time to heat up and to cool down. April through October, with June thru August being the warmest, are typically the best times that you can swim in the ocean without a wet suit.

This means warm ocean water temperatures are not going to be available during the winter and spring months, Sarasota's busiest tourist season.

THE PEDESTRIAN AREAS (AND NIGHTLIFE)
****************************************************

There are some places in Sarasota where you don't really need a car (once you're there) and can walk to a variety of different shops and restaurants

* Downtown Sarasota (mainland)
* Siesta Key Village (Siesta)
* South Village (Siesta)
* St. Armand's Circle (Lido)
* Gulf Gate (mainland)
* UTC (mainland)

Of these, Downtown Sarasota has the most options to choose from by far, and I'm including the Rosemary District (as it's adjacent to downtown). It also has a bustling farmer's market every Saturday morning. UTC is an upscale(ish) mall with a lot of additional stores and restaurants located very close to the mall but not it in it. Gulf Gate is well known for it's bar scene. Siesta Key Village is almost exclusively for tourists staying on-island that don't want to mess with any bridges.

Sarasota is NOT a major urban population center and doesn't have the nightlife of a major city. Don't expect it to and you won't be disappointed. If you simply must have that kind of scene, St. Petersburg and Ybor City in Tampa, both a good 45-60m drive north from Sarasota, will scratch that itch for you.

Honorable mention goes to Pinecraft (mainland Sarasota), a small but bustling Amish and Mennonite community. They operate a number of shops, cafes, and restaurants open to the general public and prefer to walk or bike everywhere. You'll see many locals in traditional Amish clothing if you come here, mixing with the English (they refer to anyone not Amish as "English"). Some of them also run a "come-for-the-experience" local grocery store chain called Detwiler's (try the pineapple machine). Pinecraft and all Amish-owned businesses are closed on Sundays.

THE PARKS, GARDENS, TRAILS & NATURE

There are a lot of other parks and gardens too, but these are the most popular and accessible.

ZOOS, AQUARIUMS, AND ANIMALS
****************************************************

All of these are only accessible by car, you may need advanced reservations so be sure to check ahead

* Jungle Gardens (flamingos, alligators )
* Big Cat Habitat (lions, tigers, bears, capybara)
* Mote Aquarium (sharks, manatees, otters, fish)
* Save our Seabirds (birds)
* Myakka State Park (wild alligators, seasonal boat tours)
* Myakka Elephant Ranch (elephants, reservations only, sells out far in advance)
* Lido Key mangrove kayak tours (wild manatees, but only sometimes)

Check the hours of each one before you go. For example, Big Cat's only open 12p-4p and only on certain days. Big Cat's "Big Cat Show" is usually at 2 pm and they sometimes have yoga with the animals (reservations only) before the park opens.

*Note that all of these establishments have different track records when it comes to caring for the animals. Do your research before you go and use your best judgement.

THE CIRCUS
****************************************************

Sarasota was for a long time the winter home for Ringling Circus during it's heyday. There is a huge legacy and influence from the circus in Sarasota, and you can still see various shows today.

Most shows are seasonal, so be sure check the schedule ahead of time.

* Ringling Museum & Asolo Theater - (the grounds are simply massive)
* Circus Arts Conservatory - multiple circus' operate out of the Circus Arts Conservatory, and they even offer circus lessons to the public (be warned: they're not easy)
* Wonderland Circus at UTC
* Mr. Swindle's Traveling Peculiarium (Adult-themed humor, not for kids)
* Loomis Bros. Circus
* Showfolks of Sarasota Circus

There are undoubtedly a few more I've missed, so be sure to google or ask around

The Wallenda family are a notable set of local Sarasota celebrities, a family of circus performers spanning generations that still perform to this day.

For live music, Tampa is going to best your best bet for any type of "scene" and also for traditional large scale concert venues.

A lot of restaurants and bars in Sarasota will have local live music on busy evenings, way too many to list. Of these, Stottlemyer's Smokehouse, Owen's Fish Camp (downtown location), and the Siesta Key Beach Club are particularly noteworthy. Each has a very different vibe, so check them out online before you go.

Kava Social Club, while it doesn't have live music often and is one town north in Bradenton, gets a call out as the only 18+ friendly hangout spot open 24/7/365 (meaning it's going to be open at 3:17am on a Tuesday)

You can also find buskers performing live music on the sidewalk at St. Armand's Circle on busier nights.

It serves as the Sarasota County Fairgrounds, hosts a small Comic Con, has professional dwarf wrestling, does a Gem and Crystals show, and who knows what else?

Check their schedule to see if anything coming up both aligns with your visit and piques your interest

MLB SPRING TRAINING (BASEBALL)

The Baltimore Orioles have their Spring Training in Sarasota at Ed Smith stadium. Games are in February and March. Catch a game, have a hot dog, wave at all the East Coast snowbirds when the Yankees come to town.

(Since I am not a golfer) This is not a complete list, there are several more courses around and some driving ranges too. These are just the ones that get mentioned most frequently. For the others, Google's your friend...

The Resort At Longboat Key is also noteworthy because its course is gorgeous and basically sits right on the ocean, however, access is limited: it's membership-only or if you're a guest staying at their hotel (its expensive, but not more than your typical luxury hotel).

DINING OPTIONS
****************************************************

I simply cannot list all the restaurants in Sarasota. There's a lot of 'em.

You're just going to have to look elsewhere online for where to eat, my advice would be to narrow it down and search specifically for what you want, for example "thai food", "water view", "high-end steakhouse", "brunch options", "date night", "themed restaurants", they will all get you considerably different results, with solid choices for each one.

If you stick to the "walkable/pedestrian areas" I mentioned earlier, you'll be fine, but there are certainly a good number of hidden gems in random spots requiring a car, too.

INTERACTING WITH THE LOCALS
**************************************************

* Online:
You may get quite a few recommendations for Applebee's (a long-standing meme) if you ask for dinner recommendations, while in other posts you may get 10 sarcastic replies and 0 helpful ones.

Some of that is just bad luck, but a lot of it is sheer exhaustion (I'm tired, boss) from the locals hearing the same questions posted over and over again from the never-ending stream of lazy tourists and incoming transplants. Do your research before posting, be respectful, and you'll likely get the response you're looking for.

* On the roads:
Rush hour during peak times can be especially bad in Sarasota.

The stoplight you are waiting at may turn green, then red, without you making it through - possibly multiple times. Oncoming traffic may be so constant that it becomes impossible to make a left turn, forcing you to turn right and make a U-turn instead. The bridges to the islands get jammed up at certain times. And we have those pesky roundabouts (that have been proven many times over to reduce traffic) that many tourists just aren't used to.

Don't let all of that ruin your day. Know what's coming, factor it in to your plans (google maps' "leave at" feature is a great tool for this), be patient, and most of all: give all the other drivers on the road with you a break.
