Al Pacino said in an interview that regarding the scene between Hannah and McCauley, DeNiro felt that the scene should not be rehearsed so that the unfamiliarity would be conveyed to the audience. It was.

I don’t think many movies of the same genre can match the scene when the crew are leaving the bank. To this day, I think this is the best weapon/gunfire exchange I’ve seen in the movie theater.

The sound designer put microphones all around the street, to capture as much sound bits as he could.

The music is just a ticking bomb so the intensity is building up until the whole thing explodes.

People think it’s the shootout. But it’s more about the buildup and having an amazing payoff.

Every other movie that has a shootout I think misses a long anticipation build up.

I think only weakness of that scene is cinematography, it is just a tad bit outdated as it follows the standard of the action flicks at the time - shot/reverse shot of the gun being fired and fire impact, rather than over the shoulder POV of all action happening in a single frame that's more common with modern movies. There are several POV shots, but they are really a bit lacking.

I saw this in the theater after dropping some acid. Didn’t know anything about the movie, and I was so fucked up that I thought Pacino and DeNiro were the same person, and that he was pretending to try to catch himself. When they sat down for coffee I stood up and shouted “Al Pacino’s in this?”

This scene is legendary, perfectly well executed by two legendary actors who perfectly conveyed the ideologies of their characters in this one scene. The good cop and the criminal both having a normal human conversation, and also showing respect to one another and how they neither want to go against each other because of that respect but will do what they both have to do because of the men they are.

I literally just found Thief on VHS in the wild and scooped it up bc of the cover art and the VHS tape being extra fancy (I got it at Half Price Books for like $8 and it supposedly goes for $50-70ish on eBay, which I can assume has to do with the tape quality), and only then found out it's a Michael Mann movie (his directorial film debut) AND has a score by Tangerine Dream! I'm totally watching it tonight, and am looking forward to it.

Are you aware of the "made for TV movie" version of Heat that was called LA Takedown? Its literally the same movie, same lines, but with horrible acting compared to DeNiro and Pacino.

Honestly, the Vincent isn’t that bad. The Neil is damned awful. He’s trying to do an unblinking badass/psycho thing and it just comes off corny. The cold-blooded criminal needs to be charming if the dynamic of rooting for and against both characters is going to work.

If Vincent had had a better actor to play off of, it might’ve turned out decent.

IIRC they paid big money for a traditional cinematic movie score, but then ultimately went with the hypnotic ambient music some guy made in his bedroom. The rest, as they say, is history.

Heat is the soundtrack album to the 1995 film Heat). The score is compiled mostly with Elliot Goldenthal's compositions although there are a variety of other artists featured, including U2/Brian Eno project Passengers), Lisa Gerrard, Moby and Terje Rypdal.

Amazing scene between Vito "I forget why I can't stop having coffee with the police in cafes" Corleone and Michael "hairspray is my love language" Corleone in which Michael digs for info about his parents' relationship and his dear departed mother, since he never got to meet her growing up what with her always cooking up pasta in the kitchen 21 hours a day. Vito didn't go in the kitchen much as he felt its heat comin around the corner and would run out of the house within 30 seconds of the oven going on. What a delicious family moment.
