Broke a spoke on my front wheel. It’s a Maddux RS3.0 wheel which uses 1.8mm thickness or 15 gauge (straight gauge) J-Bend spokes. 294mm in length, black color.

Ideally, I would like to not change the nipple, so I don’t have to take the tire and tube off in order to change this single spoke.

14 gauge (2.0mm) spokes are readily available, but my existing nipple would not work. 14/15/14 gauge butted spokes would be more suitable as the center thickness would match my existing spokes, but they still won’t fit the existing nipples.

I do see Sapim branded 15 gauge spokes online, usually available through sellers that offer wheel building services and I could probably order a set of these and wait a couple of weeks to get them.

Just wondering if anyone knows local shops that may stock these.

will be visiting the city for the whole month. never stayed long enough to bring my bike with me before. what type of routes/group rides are a must? i do both social/casual riding as well as endurance/sports riding. definitely want to join critical mass while i’m there.
also curious about the single speed/fixie rides. i have two bikes, one road bike, one single speed. everyone tells me it is too hilly to ride a single speed in the city, still not sure on which bike to bring. what do y’all recommend?

Hi! I've always been a casual bicyclist, but just picked up my first e-bike (Class 1), and am starting to broaden my horizons. I find the roads here in Kitsap a little daunting, but with the Color Classic coming up in October, I was thinking about signing up for the shorter Hansville loop (~25 miles) as a first effort. Has anyone done this recently, and how did it go? Is it well managed and good for a newcomer? TIA

Change my mind. I've ridden this trail a lot recently as it's the easiest way to get from West Seattle to the Green River trail, which is mostly lovely and a great place to train. However, I start every ride annoyed and cursing as I ride over endless, enormous, tree roots. There are so many, and they're so aggressive, that twice now they have yeeted a water bottle out of my behind-the-seat cages.

Meanwhile, Marginal right next to it is a perfectly pleasant road to drive on (but way too high speed for me to feel good about cycling on).

Why in the world can't this City manage to just... pave things?

If I started from discovery bay and biked on the trail to port Angeles- hung out there for a day or two and explored the national park and then biked back- is that a worthwhile trip? / good idea?

I really can’t tell what that stretch of the ODT looks like from pictures. It seems all the pictures I see are of the majestic Forrests that (I think) are more on the western part of the trail

I am planning a bike packing trip in a couple weeks and wondering if anyone can help with questions.

All keeping in mind, I am very beginner bike packer

1. I was planning on starting at discovery bay to port Angeles (37 miles)

2. Day 2 port Angeles to lake crescent (35 miles).

!!!! My biggest question: the website for this portion is essentially all red and shared highway. Is it as sketchy and scary as it looks on the map?

My friend is going to meet me in port Angeles with a car and explore the national park then drive back to seattle

This past Monday, between 10 AM & noon, I tried to cross Aurora using the bike button on 92nd. After waiting for 5 minutes (a few cycles of the traffic light at 90th), I just gave up and crossed when safe, using the island to cross in stages.

Has anyone else encountered this, esp recently? At what point does it warrant a Find it, Fix it report?

How does everyone feel about riding in bus lanes? With the new bus lane on Denny, it opens up new possibilities. You can fly past traffic during rush hour, it feels good.

If I'm coming south on the west side of the Fremont Bridge, what's the correct way to connect to the westbound Ship Canal Trail? Am I supposed to ride on the sidewalk on Florentia St to 3rd Ave N? Ride in the street and wait for the light on Nickerson? Dismount and walk down to the trail?

I understand Bellevue has now given the go ahead for Line bikes. The problem is, in a suburban setting there are just places you shouldn't leave them. I was out on a bike ride today around M.I. and there were 3 of them on the bike path leaning against the railings on the east channel bridge. When I got home, there was one right in the middle of the sidewalk next to my driveway. It's a steep hill and some people ride up the sidewalk or even get off and push their bikes. They'd have to go in the road to get around it. It's just stupid.

Apart from any other considerations those are odd places to leave them as there's still some walking to do. Maybe the batteries died? Presumably you can still pedal them though?

I’m having a hard time finding companies that allow delivery via bike. Is there a good place to find that info? Specifically looking for work downtown, Georgetown, SoDo, and/or West Seattle.

Bothell is a very straightforward ride, just go up the Burke Gilman until it ends/turns into the Sammamish River Trail. Bothell actually starts a little before that, but we just flew back from Europe yesterday, so the goal was to get some outdoor exercise with minimal thinking required.

Since the ride is so easy, let's reminisce back when I first arrived in Seattle, and the Burke ended at Logboom Park. Logboom was a nice place to turn around; I often brought a book and read a few chapters in the grass. But eventually I started venturing beyond into Bothell. This required taking 522/Bothell Way, until they built the three trail underpasses that currently exist east of Logboom.

I remember at the border there was a sign that read "Bothell: for a day, or a lifetime." I always read that in a malevolent Rod Serling/Twilight Zone voice in my head. I'm pretty sure there's at least 1 instance of this sign still around near downtown Bothell.

Speaking of Downtown Bothell, a friend used to live near Main Street and we'd go there most every week to watch Star Trek and play poker (grad student life). The bridge over the river at Bothell Landing at the time was wood and arched. I definitely wiped out on it at least once during the rainy season.

My most memorable Bothell bike trip was when I went to fetch a new microwave oven plate at an appliance place a few miles up the Bothell Everett Highway. Getting there wasn't too difficult, and the plate fit in my backpack easily enough, but the pack only had shoulder straps, not chest or waist straps, and by the time I crossed back into the Seattle City limits, my back was killing me and I still had 5 miles or so to go. This was when I decided to buy panniers.

I filed a police report that day, and I've been looking through Craiglist/OfferUp/FB Marketplace but have not seen anything. I'm posting here, hoping against hope in case anyone in the area has seen it around and ask a favor to be on the lookout for it. That model is discontinued and I've put a lot of miles on that bike, I wanna hang on to any glimmer of hope of getting it back.

I had recently installed Surly Moloko handlebars on it, but had not taken a photo before it got stolen. It also had a souvenir NY license plate that says "DEBBIE" on the rear rack.

Living on the east side, my opinion is Coal Creek Parkway Southeast running between Bellevue and Newcastle. It's a constantly winding road with rolling terrain, and blind corners. There is simply a strip of paint as a "divider". I've driven on the road with a car for nearly a decade. I constantly see vehicles around me drifting and driving onto the bicycle lane while trying to navigate the curves sometimes driving completely on the bicycle lane while driving 45-50 mph. The speed limit was recently lowered from 40 mph to 35 mph but obviously no change in driver behavior.

Even though I bicycle several hundred miles a month, I have never felt safe enough to ride on this roadway and in the past decade I've only seen three bicyclists actually ever use the bicycle lanes. Its an embarrassment and should not be even labeled as bicycle infrastructure because it gives bicyclists a false sense of safety while actually risking their lives by simply existing.

Planning out some events I want to train for for next year and I have never done a bike race/event (mostly just running). I want to sign up for the Chilly Hilly but only have an REI Hybrid bike. Do I NEED a road bike or can I do this event on my bike to make sure I love it before I invest in another bike. I’m sure i’d be faster on a road bike but… they’re expensive.

My dad (a senior rider) was nearly knocked off his bike yesterday (Saturday, Aug 22) around 1:45pm on the I-90 trail between 118th Ave SE and Factoria. He was heading eastbound when a group of 3 on motorized bikes came toward him. As they passed, one of them swerved in close and kicked his handlebars. Thankfully he managed to stay upright.
His eyesight isn’t great and it happened quickly, so the only detail he caught was that the rider who kicked him was wearing a large black boot.
Long shot, but If you were on this segment Saturday early afternoon and saw a group matching this description, or have any footage from around that stretch, I’d really appreciate hearing from you. I’m also filing a report with PD so there’s a record in case this group is doing this to other riders.
