☕ Discussion Facelights?
Are facelights still out, lol? I know for awhile people would complain left and right about people wearing face lights because they could look awful to other SL residents -depending on the venue or/and someone's light settings on viewers it could actually become obnoxious.
Im specifically referring to a facelight that came with an amazing realistic 2k skin i bought. It is a very, very subtle light. It indeed does make my face look amazing -without it, my face always seems to have a shadow or a tint that makes parts of my face look almost a little blue. I have tinkered with my own viewer settings, lights etc....and it just doesnt get better.
I do not want wreck other people's experience on SL, however. And I never wear it at a night club or a night outdoor venue, etc etc...

Some people in SL love to control others by shaming them into conformity. As long as your look and lighting effects aren't extreme, their critiques are useful to you in that now you know who to block and derender. I was dancing at a rave with glowsticks and someone commented negatively in local. I tipped the dj and host, blocked the complainer then danced next to them until they left. You do you

Subtle facelight should be fine. The ire, as I recall, was reserved for those that lit up an entire room. (See also: jewellery with blinkenlights.)
I tend to adjust my Personal Lighting settings if I'm in a dark or poorly-lit space. Just need to remember to reset it when going elsewhere.

Depends on how egregious it is. Your mileage may vary. I've seen personal spotlights in the middle of clubs to this day and I can't stand them.
Most of the good ones that are subtle will let you tinker with the range so it is only affecting you.

There should be no reason whatsoever to wear a facelight outside of a photography session.

Yeah since there's no way of knowing other people's settings, you have no control over how you appear to others and you can set your lighting for how you appear to yourself.

I almost never have my viewer on shared experience. Builders and club owners have the worst idea of what lighting should be indoors.
I use a face light that came with my Lel head, and it is fine, but I'm almost always using Firestorm's Nam's Optimal Skin 2.
I recently bought some clothing with animated textures, and they came with their own lights. I'm guessing it's a PBR thing. Buy yikes, they are bright, and the clothing is fine without them. SMDH.

Am I remembering wrong, or doesn't Firestorm have a setting to not render personal lights on other avatars?
I'll have to get on my alt sometime and see if I can find it, but in my early days on SL, circa 2008-9, I had this rig, that's very reminiscent of a jet pack, that has an array of giant spotlights. It was called Facelight 3000. I would often put it on to mock people with obnoxiously bright face lights. This thing wouldn't just light up a room, it would light up a sim.
The worst offenders always seemed to be people claiming to be models. Ok, so what? Are you doing a photo shoot right now?

No. I just have a very nice skin that looks like crap with all the viewer lighting. I logged in on another viewer to my alt and the facelight is so subtle, other people should not even know what it is or that it is there. Thanks for the conversation.
BTW, I remember rigs like you're lol....don't worry you will not need to wear it for me.

Since eeps have been a thing I haven't noticed facelights at all. I'm not sure if that's because they aren't used, or if personal eep settings just don't show them.

Face lights are fine and keep your avatar looking good under all lighting conditions providing you use a subtle one like those provided with every Lelutka head.

I always wear a body light but not just any body light. There is only one club I have been to that asked me to take it off (and I go to lots of clubs).
Why do I wear a body light ?
Simple - go to a club - set your environment to Midnight and watch how everyone hides in the dark including yourself. Not fun at all. With a natural body light you can see yourself dance. You get the idea. In any low lighting place you go to the light will keep you looking great. It's not just for photography.

I enjoy watching myself and my partner dance together. And often will take vids of us dancing too which is nigh impossible when it's all dark. Yes I could change environment but midnight is a very nice setting to use at the right times. Try the difference with a facelight and not @ midnight environment in SL - you may be surprised.

Before I began using windlights, I used what was called a polite facelight, or one that adjusted on its own. It had a default soft glow, not so much a massive spotlight or six. I originally purchased this in like 2010 and am trying it out again in 2026. Now, I don't recall if I ever paid for the full version ('cause it reminded me of WinZip) but in 2026 that very well could have changed. Here is the URL:

Firestorm has an option to turn Facelights off for your viewer, so you can't see anyones, but they can still see their own. I'm sure if Firestorm has it, then other viewers do too. So if people don't want to see Facelights, they should just turn them off. Not expect other people to pander to them and their likes/dislikes. It's your Second Life, as long as you're not fucking around or ruining other peoples SL's purposefully, and in a way they aren't able to counteract, then fuck 'em. You do you.

I use a face light set for the minimum brightness, minimum spread, with (interestingly) a brown color. It’s just enough to keep my face showing without lighting up anything around me.

Thanks for the conversation everyone. I always appreciate different opinions. I am an oldtimer of Sl; 18 years and was around for the days of bling, 20,000 megawatt face and body lights and can vividly remember how annoying they could be. I found a solution I think that helps my problem and can avoid annoying people in SL.

I added the ability to turn off or on facelights to my Firestorm Quick Prefs. Normally I leave the on but if someone uses an insanely bright facelight I can turn them off. I also added the ability to to turn off Local lighting because some places have horrible local lighting.
