Seedswap Logistics! Share your tips & tricks for successful Seedswaps

What are your systems to successfully track trades, get seeds through the postal service intact, and generally be successful on the logistics side of seedswapping?

Trying something a little new! I have been growing, gardening, seed saving, swapping, and farming for 25+ years. In that time I have accumulated a lot of information. In my real life, I frequently teach classes and workshops around food & gardening. This is my attempt to offer up all my accumulated knowledge to my favorite subreddit. You ask, I'll answer. If you stump me, I'll go find an answer. The door is open and I am here to help.

P.s. I KNOW some of you have amazing niche and broad knowledge as well. If you'd like to volunteer to be the Expert for another Ask An Expert post, let me know! I would love to run these semi-regularly.

Quick Question - Figs

I have permission to harvest figs from a huge (tree) fig plant. I want to attempt fig jam if I can harvest enough.

Seeds - are they in the pulp?

My grandmother loved figs. I want to attempt growing my own jumbo tree/bush.

Suggestions or input.....

Help! Take my NYC plants*!

There's a good chance that I'll move away from frequent garden access soon. Raid my 4yo garden for goodies! Shade adapted and Bedstuy-approved. Distant swappers please send me money for shipping but locals, come through.

Multi-generation spider plants.

Sunflowers, foxglove, mums, coreopsis, bee balm, ostrich and Christmas ferns, and much more. Ironweed, strawberry, sunchoke, morning glory, beard tongue, evening primrose, fleabane, coneflower. Hepatica, hosta, Virginia creeper. Solomon's seal (dunno which kind). See my post history for even more plant IDs.

Seeds, seedlings, cuttings, plants, and soil rich in even more seeds; DM me to coordinate.

How do you all keep track of what you've promised to whom? My swap list is a mess

I got into seed swapping this past spring almost by accident. A neighbor had way too many zucchini and cucamelon seeds and offered some in exchange for whatever tomatoes I had leftover from my dehydrating experiments. That one exchange turned into me posting in a couple local gardening groups, and now I've got probably fifteen ongoing "deals" going with people I've never met in person, mailing envelopes back and forth across three states.

The gardening part has honestly gotten better because of this. I never would have grown Cherokee Purple or Black Krim tomatoes on my own, I always just bought whatever starts the garden center had. Now half my raised beds are stuff I got through trades: a striped German heirloom tomato from someone in Ohio, dragon tongue beans from a guy who does a whole seed library out of his garage, and some kind of purple podded pea that I still don't know the real name of because the packet just said "Grandma's Peas" in sharpie.

The problem is I am terrible at organization. I've got a notebook where I write down who I owe seeds to and what I'm supposed to send back, but half the time I forget to actually mail things until someone gently reminds me two months later. I tried a spreadsheet once and abandoned it by week three. At this point I just have a shoebox by my desk with little labeled envelopes and I add to it whenever I remember.

Anyway, harvest is starting to come in now so I'm collecting seeds from the successful stuff to send out this fall. Curious what system other people use, because right now mine is basically vibes and guilt.

my advice if you're looking for local seeds on a big city

Hey everyone, first post here. Seedbombing is imo the easiest way to regrow plants in a larger field, and I'm currently working on a huge abandoned field. The way to find a local store that sells seeds that are native specifically to my region was literally to just go asking elder ladies. Not only they are usually the owners of these kinds of stores, but they're also the target consumers. Then when I found the seed store, the seller was also able to hook me on another local store that could sell me an entire orange tree, and guess what, all elder ladies.

None of these stores are even visible on google maps because they're small and older than google, but fortunately now I know how to grow an infinite amount of native plants.
