discussion [META] A chart for knowing if a post is shrinkflation

Post image
196 Upvotes

There's, in my opinion, way too many posts here that aren't actually shrinkflation. Please consult the chart!

I know you're annoyed at your product but in order to be shrinkflation you need to prove it's actually shrinkflated in quantity or quality.

Things that aren't shrinkflation:

  1. a single item with no proof of how big it was before
  2. a food you think is worse quality/less good than before without showing the ingredients have changed
  3. a product from your childhood that only looks smaller now that you are bigger
  4. a handmade product that is smaller/worse than usual due to employee error (for example, a pizza that is a smaller circle than advertised because an employee didn't stretch it enough)
  5. a factory-produced product that is smaller/worse than usual due to manufacture error (for example, a bag of chips that says 500g but is actually only 300g)
  6. a product you think it just expensive for what it is

Originally shrinkflation meant just if the price increased (or stayed the same) despite the quantity decreasing. However, quality shrinkflation is just as bad (if not worse), where companies nefariously switch out butter for cheaper oils or etc. so the weight is the same but the product is worse.

Maybe this is a silly hill to die on but I'm here to die on it.

skimpflation Chef Boyardee

So I am not proud of this but a few weeks ago in a late night moment of snacking desperation I ate a can of Chef Boyardee overstuffed ravioli that I found in the back of the pantry that expired in 2020.

Surprisingly, it was pretty good. The sauce was thick and rich and full of meat chunks, the ravioli were in fact overstuffed, and the stuffing had a meaty taste and texture.

It was so good in fact, that the next day I was craving it again. I went to the store and bought the exact same can of overstuffed ravioli. The first thing I noticed was that the calorie count is lower, and the first ingredient is now water rather than tomato paste.

The new can was shockingly bad. And we are talking about Chef Boyardee, a food that was only a few steps above inedible slop in the first place. I didn’t know they could even make it that much shittier and cheaper and still legally sell it.

The “meat sauce” was thin, watery, and had no meat in it. The pasta was much thinner and did not stick together, there was less filling, and the filling itself was a mushy, flavourless paste. At least the previous filling attempted to pass as something akin to meat.

I’ve been eating Chef Boyardee here and there for over 30 years and in that time it has more or less stayed exactly the same. Apparently in 2025 the company was bought by the private equity firm Brentwood Partners so I guess that explains the drastic decline in quality.

Anyway I sent a strongly-worded email and they’re sending me a $3 refund cheque in the mail haha.

Edit: first and third pics are the old can. It went from 190 cal per half can (380 for the whole can) to 320 for the whole can. So nearly a 20% reduction in calories for the same weight—made up for with more water in the can.

Spotted the sneaky difference in the box sizes. One's 175g and the other is 210g. Hope the taste is still on point!

They must have changed it this week....

I already noticed the difference before buying but I needed tissues bad.

Both are still the same price. And I use tissues everyday, almost chronically. I empty 2-4 boxes a week.

So I'm pissed.

Shrinkflation Gain laundry detergent

I work as a personal shopper. Went to the location it sent me for the detergent, but I noticed the size was different than the one shown on the phone. Scanned the detergent and sure enough, it was the correct one. 🫪

Edit: I’m aware stores sell different sizes including Walmart lol. The customer wanted Gain Moonlight Breeze 154 fl oz. When I scanned the smaller 132 fl oz, it allowed me to move on and put it in the tote. If it was the incorrect item, it wouldn’t allow me to scan the tote. I’ve seen wrong pictures of an item but never the name of item and size. I almost want to place an order and see what I get. 😂 Sorry for not being thorough. 😳

Shrinkflation Lee Kum Kee Sriracha adds water

I’ve bought this Sriracha for years. My newest bottle is noticeably runnier and tastes different than what I remember.

Turns out they added water to the recipe. The nutrition facts show it as well… the serving size is the same but 1g lighter, and sodium and carbs are down.

Photos 1-2 are my current bottle’s ingredients and nutrition label (new recipe with water added)

Photos 3-4 are from Walmart’s product listing, still showing the old ingredients and nutrition facts

Photo 5 is a screenshot from Lee Kum Kee’s website (the ingredients list hasn’t been updated there)

So the actual product on shelves doesn’t match what’s advertised on third party sites or the manufacturer’s own website. Either they haven’t bothered updating anywhere but the physical label or they’re hoping nobody notices.

Either way not buying this any longer.

Mods: this is shrinkflation. Please keep my post up. The ingredients are worse and they’re adding water to dilute the product for the same cost.

Bought 1KG Chicken Breast. Cooked amount was 610g?!?! $7 more for 110g more chicken. Am I going insane.

Am I going insane?? Are they actually injecting chickens with water now to bulk out the weight on the packet and cut costs???? (woolworths australia for reference!)
As an aspiring body builder I’ve been counting out my calories etc… I was weighing out my chicken bowls for 100g chicken each.
This is to last me across SEVEN days and I bought a 1KG pack, which SHOULD’VE left me with at least 250-300g spare.
I didn’t even have enough cooked to cover 6 days? I bought **1KG** and had **600G????**

For reference a 500g packet is $9, the 1KG packet cost me $15.50. They say it’s $18.80 per KG, but on the packet it said it weighed 1KG? Almost $7 difference for 110g more chicken.

I’m losing my mind to fucking shrinkflation man. Someone please tell me this isn’t normal 😭

Ultrabrite toothpaste 🦷 🪥

This is toothpaste I usually buy from The Dollar Tree. It was originally $1 but due to inflation, the price rose to $1.25. No biggie right? So today I went to re-up and was baffled at the new tube size when I pulled it out of the box. Mind you the box looked the same size. From 6.0 oz down 4.2 oz. Still $1.25 though. A drastic cut in the amount of toothpaste which means I have to buy more toothpicks more often. Shrinkflation is real.

1st is old, 2nd is new. I didn’t have the entire packaging left, but I’m glad I had this to know I’m not crazy. Not only are the bars down from 4.0oz (113g) to 3.17oz (90g), but there’s a bunch of wasteful (imo) new packaging. The new bars are all individually packed in a cardboard box, instead of just paper wrapping

I saw posts about changes to their formula for their granola... Less quality, more fillers. As I'm eating my cereal I noticed this box has a General Mills patent without their logo. They 'conveniently' hid this. Just found out they took over the company. Did GM add sugar, artificial things, and preservatives??

skimpflation Cascade thinks you’re stupid

Thumbnail

When I went to buy my liquid Cascade recently, I noticed there was a new, more expensive option next to it. My original liquid (Complete) now had a big, new notice at the top that if I were to use this product, I would need to spend valuable extra time pre-treating stuck on messes. But if I were to pony up 2 extra dollars, the pre-treating would be included as an “all-in-one” feature on the Platinum formula.

I bought my usual Complete liquid and went home and put it next to my older Complete bottle, which suspiciously read: “Powers away 24 HR stuck on food.” Hm, I wonder if they changed the ingredients. I discovered they had removed Citric Acid. I thought surely that Citric Acid would be in the new, more expensive Platinum bottle, right?

WRONG. The ingredients are EXACTLY THE SAME in the Platinum and the new version of Complete. So they’ve not only Skimpflated the original formula, they’re selling the same formula for two extra dollars using different packaging. It’s an absolute scam.

Edit for clarity:

The first photo compares the old version of Complete with the new version of Complete.

The second photo is of the ingredients of the new version of Complete.

The third photo is of the ingredients in the new Platinum product.

Please note there are three products being compared. It’s confusing, but that’s part of the trick they’re playing!

discussion I am absolutely baffled by this decision

iWear supercare. They have decided to change the contact lens case to something that is impossible to use for what it was designed for.

For those who aren't that familiar with them, it's necessary to have decent amount of liquid with the lens, so it won't dry and harden, and that it's easier to scoop with your finger. Absolutely livid by this decision, now the new case design is so small that i can't even use it for the sole purpose. Now the lens itself barely fits in there and it's impossible to add much of any liquid with it. My finger also won't fit properly to get it from there.

You just lost a customer
