Question Need help with WE Application

Hey everyone just looking for some advice.

I was in the BOT program and have been required to withdraw upon finishing it this term. I only took one course besides the BOT course this semester and got a C-, meaning my term GPA was below 2.0.

I talked to my BOT advisor and they recommended applying for a WE under medical grounds. I've been having symptoms of depression and anxiety for months now but didn't see a professional when the symptoms started. I was in a toxic relationship and afraid to ask for help during the term because I was so ashamed of my situation. I was thinking of seeing a doctor ASAP, get an assessment, and have them fill out the required forms. But since I'm doing this after the semester already ended, I'm scared that my chances will be much lower.

If anyone has applied for a retroactive WE, can you tell me your situation, process of obtaining documents/proof, and the result? I understand this was all on me and I can't blame anyone for my own failures, just looking to see if I have a chance at the WE and continue my studies at SFU.

WEs get reviewed on a case by case basis, evaluation doesn’t change much if it’s retroactive or not. Even if someone comment a story with a positive outcome, don’t count on it.

I would advise you to book an appointment with the ombudsperson. Also, seek support at SFU Health & Counselling where they can do an assessment there.

Thank you. I already set up a meeting with the ombudsperson next week, just hoping to hear about other peoples experiences here

When I applied I needed medical documentation. You can write about how it affected you — my BoT advisor helped me with this - but you do need proof. Try going to SFU's clinic. They're really good.

When in the BOT program, are you able to take other courses? And can you still use your U-Pass?

depends on the term, and u-pass is unavailable unless you take courses.

I had one approved, then they used that approval against me to deny my other two claims so dont get your hopes up. The system is kinda fucked and they will throw everything at you to deny the claim. My guess is they dont want people applying for refunds.

This tends to happen if your successive claims fall under the same criteria (ie similar reason/scenario/problem).

Too many students have tried to abuse the WE process (ie. not on RTW but apply for multiple WE to improve their grade/GPA) so they tend to find fault in successive claims to encourage students to be proactive instead of retrospective.

I recommend checking the WE FAQ page and the SFSS “how does a WE application work” post. The SFSS page provides a list of examples for reasons WE applications have been denied/approved.

Like someone mentioned before, WE applications are reviewed on a case-by-case situation but mostly for “UNEXPECTED/UNCONTROLLABLE EVENTS”.

I would double check to see if your situation falls under medical or compassionate grounds. If it falls under medical, you have a better/higher chance of WE approval.

Also applying for complete withdrawal vs selective withdrawal makes a huge difference.
