hi, I'm looking for advice to make my smart home setup.

Currently my smart home devices are from ikea, both older and newer generation, so some of them using zigbee protocol and some of them matter protocol. In the future I'm planing to add more smart home devices from other brands, so would be nice to have flexibility and possibilities in the future. Also I'm iphone user and want to use apple home kit.

One option is diy setup. I have macmini 2014 and I can usi it as a smart home server, but I need a USB zigbee/matter dongle. What would be recommendations for that?

Another option buy a already existed today for dedicated smart home hub. What good options would be for that? How about ikea dirigera?

this is a genuine question about where the model breaks, not a which one should i buy thread.

the whole pitch for these is that it goes out every day, takes a little off the top, and you stop thinking about it. that only holds if it can get around the whole area faster than the grass grows back. on a quarter acre thats obviously true.

im at about an acre and a half. everything i read puts one charge at somewhere around an acre. so if it needs a few days to work through the whole thing, then by the time it finishes the far end the near end is ready again.

the lawn is never done. its just permanently half done.

which might be fine to look at, i dont know. but its a different product than the one that was described to me.

so where does that line actually sit. at what size did it stop feeling automatic and start feeling like a system you manage, schedules, zones, moving a base station around.

My partner and I share a bathroom and a few connected devices, and the annoying part is not really the hardware. It is the accidental crossover in the apps. A phone notification appears while someone is testing Bluetooth, an account stays signed in on the wrong device, or a shared scale turns a private number into something both people have to actively avoid seeing.

I am not looking for a more detailed health dashboard. I am trying to figure out whether a shared smart device can be set up in a way that still feels private for two people with different habits and comfort levels around tracking.

For anyone who shares health tech at home, what simple account, notification, or device-placement rule actually prevented awkward crossover? Or did you eventually decide some data is easier to keep on separate devices?

I swapped four fixtures and the whole room went noticeably darker even at full output. I now realise I never checked lumens once, I just bought whatever was on the shelf with an app. Trying to work out whether bright smart bulbs actually exist or whether the colour capability inherently costs you output. What are people using where the room stayed as bright as it was before?

I own three of them and one is directly starring at my computer monitor and someone claims can see everything I see.

We have three windows set into a faceted corner in our living room, similar to a bay window but without projecting out from the wall. There’s an outlet under one side, so I’m deciding between three separate smart roller shades or one powered curtain track around the whole corner. The shades would give us separate control, but the curtain may be simpler than trying to keep three motors moving together. Which option would you use here?

Every smart home app I have used is a list. Rooms, then devices, then a toggle. When you have forty devices, finding the one you want takes longer than walking over to the switch.

So I built SimpleHaven. You scan your home with the LiDAR camera on a recent iPhone Pro or iPad Pro, and it produces a 3D model of your rooms in a few minutes. Then you drag your Apple Home devices out of a list and drop them where they actually are: the lamp on the nightstand, the fan on the ceiling, the lock on the front door. From then on, you tap the thing in the model to control the thing in your house.

Hey everyone, I was looking for support for some recommendations for Smart light switches that I can control with my phone (on/off). wanted to see which one would be the best and easiest to work with. Currently I have no smart hub, but I was just trying to see where I could start out.

Would I also need to buy smart bulbs? or just with the smart light switch is fine?
