I've been fascinated by the branching structures of snow crystals for a while, and spent some time studying macro photographs of different snowflakes — especially the way six-fold symmetry can produce such an incredible variety of forms.

Eventually I tried translating some of those patterns into a three-dimensional light. I designed the branching geometry digitally, then 3D printed the structure in translucent material so that the light could travel through the branches.

This is the finished piece glowing in the dark. I thought fellow snow appreciators here might enjoy seeing it. :)

Usually, Kyoto hardly sees any snow at all, unless you venture out toward the mountains. But this year in February, we got a full day of snow in the entire city. I took a nine hour walk that day, shooting lots of photos and enjoying the amazing, serene atmosphere. It was quite magical.
