Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Monday that could allow athletes who live in hotter parts of the state to practice and play sports in higher temperatures.

Apologies if this isn't the place to post this but I'm in need of change in my life.

I'm 28 y/o. I've moved a lot in my childhood and have landed back in my childhood hometown. Living there since 2019 and covid kind of kept me here.

I'm not doing well mentally. I've never been what most would consider stable in the mental health department but I make do. Maybe I'm going through a mid-life crisis and that's what this is but, I need a change.

I'd like to live closer to the ocean. Simply, all I am searching for is maybe a day every two weeks where I can drive to the beach, a real beach, and enjoy the nature. I'm currently in Texas, where the nearest beach is about a four hours drive from me but these beachs are murky. I've not got a whole lot going for me where I'm at. And with the world going how it is, I'd just like a major change. I have a job that keeps me afloat just enough but I have no college education and no room for growth with this. I've been at this job for nearly 7 years and I'm just sort of at a breaking point with my life. I've got some family around but I am not really close to anyone. I've just gone through a breakup and it has fundamentally changed my brain chemistry. The pain from this hurts me so. I'd like a change. I'd like to leave. I've got until October 31st on my current lease.
Do you live within 30 minutes of the beach? Do you know of anyone who could use a live in caregiver? I'd like to find someone who would let me work for them i.e, cook, clean, run errands, etc., in exchange for a room. I don't know how to cook very well but if groceries are paid for I would learn and practice. We could talk over breakfast, go for walks, I just ask for my own room. To avoid breaking rule one of this sub, I'd like to also say that I'm searching for places where this kind of post may be acceptable. If anyone has any reccomendations, advice, anything, please let me know.

Thinking about doing a last-minute Big Bear trip with my partner for 2 nights. We’re mostly looking to get out of the city, eat some good food, spend a little time outdoors and just relax without having every hour planned out.

For those who go to Big Bear regularly, what would you realistically do with a short weekend? Is 2 nights enough to get a good feel for the area, or would you add another night if you had the option?

Also, is there anything you’d recommend booking ahead of time, or is it better to keep a short trip like this flexible and decide as you go?

Senate Bill 868 would allow Californians to buy portable solar panels and plug them into a wall outlet without needing utility approval. The law is designed to make solar accessible to people who don't own their homes.

I want to find something to do around me (I live in Murrieta) with friends this Halloween season. We don't want to do any of the "knotts scary farm, horror nights, etc" because last year the lines were so long it just wasn't worth it. I am willing to go down as far as San Diego, I'd rather not go to LA. Any suggestions?

I am thinking about moving our small family to CA i’m hoping Orange County but considering Santa Clarita because it’s similar to the terrain here in PHX and we might have an easier time adjusting. We have a successful business here in PHX with box truck transportation services. And we are hoping to expand in CA and start with 1-2 box truck transportation services. Any advice or anything you feel like we should know in advance I’m aware rent will be more expensive and other things but anything you feel could help us mentally prepare or be aware of. Any chance we get to go on vacay it’s always CA it’s like our second home and we are wanting to make the jump and move 💙

Hi! I’m moving to Southern California and have been going back and forth between apartments in Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Long Beach. I’ve visited all three areas, but I’d really love opinions from people who actually live or have lived around there.

I’m in my early 20s and will be moving without really knowing many people, so I’d love somewhere that has a sense of community and opportunities to meet people. I like a little bit of hustle and bustle and having people/things going on around me. I don’t necessarily want somewhere super quiet or suburban.

I like coffee shops, thrifting, studying at coffee shops/libraries, going on walks, and having random things to do nearby. I have a car, so I definitely don’t need everything to be within walking distance, but ideally I’d like:
- At least one coffee shop I can walk to
- A good grocery store within 10 minutes, whether walking or driving
- Target, gas station, pharmacy, gym, etc. relatively close
- Good study spots
- Somewhere I can take walks during the day: streets/neighborhoods, parks, near the beach, etc.
- Events/things going on nearby
- People around my age + opportunities to meet people

Safety is also pretty important to me. I’ve lived Downtown before, so I’m used to being around homelessness and it honestly doesn’t bother me much. That being said, I’d prefer not to live somewhere with an especially high concentration of it or somewhere I’d regularly feel uncomfortable walking around alone. I probably won’t be walking around much at night, so I’m mainly talking about feeling comfortable during the daytime.

I’ll also occasionally need to drive into Downtown/Central LA. I don’t personally want to live in there, but want to stay within a somewhat reasonable distance (around an hour), so access to LA is something I’m keeping in mind.

Anaheim/Santa Ana would put me 10-15mins closer to my current job than Long Beach. Though my day-to-day quality of life outside of work is more important to me than having the shortest possible commute. I’m okay driving a little farther if it means coming home to an area I genuinely enjoy living in.

I’m also hoping for somewhere that feels like a change. Greenery, nice places to walk, a sense of community, things happening around me.

Some areas in consideration is around Broadway in DTLB, the Platinum Triangle in Anaheim, and around the 55/Red Hill area in Santa Ana.

Based on all of that, what would you recommend? And are there any neighborhoods nearby that you think would fit what I’m looking for better?

Everyone this past weekend talks about how the stadiums at USC and Stanford are empty, and a lot of people on social blame it on demographics. California is mostly Asian and Hispanic now, and Asians largely don’t care about sports while Hispanics mostly follow soccer. So is that why no one watches college football here anymore?

I basically live in socal part time, I split my time here and on the east coast. The perfect weather seems like it’s coming to an end. It’s been more humid than Florida, there’s a category 4 hurricane on the way, earthquakes can happen anytime, and fires can also still happen anytime.

I don’t know if it’s worth $6 gas and $1.5 million for a 3 bedroom home anymore. There are too many risks, and the world is changing. It’s almost like the universe is telling people to move.

I’m all ears to be convinced otherwise, because this is truly my favorite place all things considered as a natural beauty lover.

I’m a student at UCR and I wanted to visit the other UC campuses before I graduate. However I don’t have the time nor the money to visit all of them. Which campuses would be the most fun to visit during the summer?

I know that UC Davis has an equestrian program and I saw that UC Irvine has an ice rink near campus for starters. I think UCLA also has a water sports program. Are any of these activities well-funded, well-maintained, and worth my time and money?

Campuses that I am not really interested in:
* UC Merced
* UC Riverside (I’m already there)
* UC Santa Cruz

Edit: Very specifically I am NOT looking for just beautiful campuses. I am also looking for things to DO on or around campus besides just sightseeing.

Though this took longer than expected due to work and family commitments, I'm delighted to say this fantasy style map of California is finally finished. Almost every historical landmark or bit of local mythology was suggested by someone on here or other California subreddits.

I really couldn't be happier with the level of feedback from everyone, and I've tried to get as much in as possible. That being said, the scale of the map is limiting - especially in urban areas. I think in the future I'm gonna end up making more localized maps for individual counties. So if your suggestion wasn't included, please know that I still appreciate your feedback and will endeavor to get them in my future maps of the area. If you think there's anything I've missed out or should change, just let me know - I won't be getting these printed for another day or two, so I can still add in details.

It has been noted that the map is busy - I totally get that, and that's just how I like to do things. I enjoy getting as much detail in as possible and including cool features which would otherwise be overlooked. I get these made up in large formats so it works better in person than it does on a screen.
