Yeah but you aren’t going to make it sounding like that. A lot of rap is about vocal presence/cadence and I doubt many people are going to listen to someone who doesn’t sound “masculine” or have a tough/intimidating presence. Those artists get barely any play.

It’s not nearly to the same degree, but it’s similar to rock stars who had wealthy parents à la The Strokes or Kid Rock. They like making the music but they hate that their image is tarnished because they came from money. It’s just all the more silly because a lot of rap isn’t just the music it’s the image of living the real street life and somehow you’re more credible if you lived a dangerous life.

No argument there…but that dangerous life comes with real life consequences…and money can’t always fix your record or the people who you’ve managed to piss off. The”dangerous life” normally comes with type of loyalty that you can’t be in the spotlight for. A lot of these rappers have real people behind the scenes who do the real work while they rap as the face. And the ones who do happen to do their own dirt are either locked down or already dead. I would not trade a rich and comfortable lifestyle just to make 🥷 think I’m hard. But I also can’t speak for all parties who choose that route

I think what a lot of people overlook when buying a mansion is that they want to have a perception of old money. Big houses, big estates. They don’t think those houses and estates were so big not only because of excess wealth, but because they had servants and laborers that lived there all year. I grew up in the hood, around drug dealers and actually used to hang out and smoke weed with them but it never was the lifestyle that I was impressed with or even tried to emulate. Had a few that wanted to me to do some runs for them but I always said no because I knew better even though I was like 13 years old. Cool dudes to chill with but I never aspired to be like them.

Michael Irvin grew up in a 2 bedroom home in Florida and yes, had many run-ins with the law, but he came from “the streets”.
The urge for young rappers and just young people at large to have street cred is an incredible crutch that just dilutes and overshadows the talent that is out there in the actual streets.
