IN THE WILD 1 of 500 [Shelby CSX-VNT].
Pretty interesting story on these.
1989 Shelby CSX-VNT was a limited-production performance car based on the Dodge Shadow/Plymouth Sundance platform, developed by Carroll Shelby and Shelby Automobiles.
It was the last of the Shelby Automobiles / Dodge partnership vehicles, though Shelby continued to advise on projects here and there.
It used a 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with the Garrett VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbocharger)—an early production application of variable-geometry turbo technology in a gasoline passenger car.
Output was around 175 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque, which was very strong for a compact car weighing roughly 2,600 lb.
The VNT turbo was designed to provide quicker low-RPM response while still producing strong power at higher RPM, reducing traditional turbo lag.
Shelby fitted it with a 5-speed manual transmission, upgraded suspension, larger brakes, and Shelby-specific styling, making it considerably more serious than a standard CSX.
Only 500 CSX-VNTs were produced for 1989, making it one of the rarer Shelby-branded Dodges and an interesting precursor to later high-performance turbo compacts.
