MEGATHREAD Moving to St. Catharines? PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING :)

Hello, and welcome to r/stcatharinesON. As this question is a very commonly asked. The moderators have decided to create this community highlight / MEGATHREAD to address the most commonly asked questions within this SUB. IF your question is not answered here. Please try to use the SEARCH function at the top of this subreddit first before creating a new submission.

1: Areas that are "safe"? - Safe is a generic term that the majority of us will have a different definition of. St. Catharines in general is a very safe city. The majority of problems and the feeling of being unsafe are generally surrounded around the problem of the numerous unhoused individuals in the city, and the ongoing drug problems that plague that entire country. You will find the majority of these individuals around the block between Church Street meeting Geneva Street, Niagara Steet, Queenston Street and St Paul Street. There is also a shelter on the corner of Gale and Riordon Street. As well as many temporary shelters in place in and around Centennial Gardens - This being said. The majority of these individuals will leave you alone, and the majority or crime in the city is related to thefts to fuel the drug problem. If you are uncomfortable being around people that are struggling with addiction and mental health, you should avoid the area. However, the city's downtown core is beautiful, holds a very unique charm, and has plenty of thriving local businesses that have, and continue to be part of the heart of our wonderful city.

2: Where can I meet new people? - This is another generic question asked a ton. Meeting people is subjective to the type of people you want to create relationships with. A lot of local businesses have different types of meet and greet nights. The most popular being the Mahtay Café & Lounge on St Paul Street and Ludology Boardgame Cafe. We have many amazing local restaurants, cafes and shops that also offer a different variety of patrons that you may want to check out and start a friendly conversation with some. This SUB IS NOT A DATING WEBSITE. Any posts trying setup meetings one to one will be removed due to safety concerns.

3: Setting up my new home?

A: Hydro/Electric is to be setup with Alectra Utilities.
B: Natural Gas is to be setup with Enbridge Gas.
C: Water is to be setup with the City Of St. Catharines ( Online account access available).
D: Insurance - Please contact and local Insurance Broker.
E: ISP (Internet Service Provider) - Please see the business recommendation megathread.

4: Local Businesses - Please see the Business recommendation megathread. Over 90% of the same questions asked on a regular basis can be found in there with the most popular posts/answers highlighted.

Discussion I am EMBARRASSED by the state of our Downtown

I am going to immediately preface this by saying I love a lot of our locally owned businesses, and there has been a few comments from me in the past defending it to help those businesses. But that’s injustice.

So I went for a walk, and to shop during the day today. What a disgrace! Firstly, every single garbage can I walked by had garbage overflowing out of it, and garbage piled up around it. The whole walk smelled like literal piss, clearly people just pissing wherever they want these days with zero repercussions. Tons of businesses closed, or just straighr borded up. And the amount of addicts just walking in the middle of the road, or the ones that were standing on the sidewalk leaning. I do have a ton of sympathy for their situation. But the city and region are doing absolutely nothing about this.

What the hell is going on! Why did our municipal taxes have the largest increase in history recently? Why is the NRP asking for millions of dollars more everyyear if the are no consequences to people's actions?

Previous councils did such a great job cleaning up our dowtown and making in liveable, just for a new one to come in and destroy everything that was built... I feel awful for these businesses. We have so many great places for people to shop, or eat, or hangout and have a coffee or a drink, and they are being let down. We all are!

Question Cogeco Internet - WiFi

Did anyone else in the North End of St. Catharines lose their internet / WiFi connection with Cogeco just after midnight?
According to their website, there are no outages - but alas … here I am.
My wife works from home, and she needs the internet for her job. We can’t afford (literally) to be without internet and WiFi.
If anyone else is experiencing the same problem….. please let me know so that I can rest assured that we are not the only ones.
Thanks

Experience/Story Transit rant

I want to share this here because I KNOW they're going to brush me off.

I'm just trying to get to work.

I leave 5 minutes early to catch the bus to go downtown. I'm waiting at the ESTABLISHED bus stop when I see lights in the distance. Okay, great. No problems.

THEN THE BUS DRIVES RIGHT PAST ME, driver doesn't even turn his head. I'm wearing light colours, my phone screen is as bright as the sun. There's no way this guy could have missed me accidentally.

This driver is AT WORK, his job is to STOP AND PICK PEOPLE UP. What part of that is confusing??? His sign was lit up, he was on scheduled time, everything was indicating to a reasonable person that he was in service.

It's especially frustrating that I already activated my ticket so on top of being late for work, I've also paid for a service that wasn't rendered.

I sent a complaint to Niagara Transit but I'm fully expecting it to fall on deaf ears.

Ugh

Edit: I forgot to mention that the bus stop is at a stop sign and the bus did a rolling stop and drove off. So WHEN IM DRIVING, the road rules apply to me, but when Niagara transit is, stop signs are optional??

Edit 2: to their credit, the complaints department got back to me and refunded my unused ticket and added that they will escalate the issue.

Discussion Geneva/Church street lights are out due to construction.

Which is fine, construction needs to happen.

What I’m complaining about, is the cop sitting in his car at the intersection doing nothing.

He could have been directing traffic, but no. Construction workers had to stop traffic to let pedestrians cross the road.

I understand the presence of police makes it safer for the construction workers, but why have an officer sit in the car doing nothing?

Question Looking for a good therapist in St. Catharines

Hey, I'm looking for a therapist for myself, I'm a guy in my 30s. Mostly dealing with anxiety, anger, drinking more than I should and some stuff from growing up that I’ve never really dealt with. Ideally someone who works with men, or if they’re male.

I’ve been looking around online but there are so many options I don’t even know where to start, and the reviews haven’t been much help. Hoping to hear from people who actually had a good experience with someone.

St. Catharines would be easiest but I’m willing to drive a bit for the right therapist. Any recommendations?

Need Advice/Recommendations Niagara bars/clubs - other venues for meeting people at 25+?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can recommend any good venues for meeting new people on a Friday or Saturday night as an adult? I understand downtown has many such places but I assume they're packed with uni students? Not sure I wanna be a 30 y.o mingling in places like that. Preferably where people are mostly standing/dancing and not siloed into tables with the people they came with.

Thanks :)

Events Psychotherapy for people with borderline personality disorder and their partners: Research study

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi all,

My name is Skye Fitzpatrick and I'm a Clinical Psychologist and director of the Treating and Understanding Life-threatening behavior and Posttraumatic Stress (TULiP) lab at York University. Our research team is conducting an online study to examine the effects of a new couple therapy for couples where one partner is experiencing symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) compared to individual psychotherapy for people with BPD symptoms and their partners. The study will provide one of these psychotherapies to people with BPD symptoms and their partners for free, and participants will have the opportunity to complete study assessments that they will receive payment for in the form of gift cards. Our study is online and involves recruiting people across Ontario with symptoms of BPD, as well as their romantic partners. BPD diagnoses are not necessary.

More information about the study is also available on our webpage: https://www.tuliplab.ca/current-research.html. If you are interested in participating, please contact [treatbpd@yorku.ca.](mailto:treatbpd@yorku.ca) You can also contact that email if you have questions about the study. This study has been approved by the York University (e2024-261) Research Ethics Board. Please refrain from commenting on this post.

I want to send out a BIG thank** you to the 911 operator, Paramedics **Jordan and Erin (who were absolutely phenomenal), all of the incredible nurses, and Dr. Tim St. Armand at the St. Catharines Hospital.
The care, compassion and kindness shown to my daughter and our family yesterday was truly exceptional during one of the scariest moments of my life.

Question Dealing with an active trap house.

Hi all, without revealing too many details I have been dealing with an active trap house in my community. I have been documenting, taking videos, and made repeated police calls but law enforcement refuses to take any action. I am wondering if anyone can provide some further guidance or help direct me to some additional resources or information that can help. Thank you.

Need Advice/Recommendations flood waste pick up

long story short we had problems with our insurance and we finally have a contractor to come check our place. he’s coming in tomorrow and we were advised not to throw much out unless it was clearly molding etc. due to the delay we missed the flood waste pick up days (yesterday was the last day), does anyone think they’ll release more dates?

i’m thinking of paying for the waste pickup (we want to get rid of everything unsalvageable ASAP), but i do think they’re going to release more dates and i don’t want to be paying for a service that’s provided by the city for free. any ideas?

Discussion Anyone ever volunteer for Out of the Cold? Did you have a good experience?

I’m thinking about applying to volunteer to cook for Out of the Cold. I’ve been cooking in kitchens a long time.
I want to find out if anyone here has experience volunteering for them, which locations you like or dislike and why etc. I also want to hear if anyone has notes about how the kitchens are and whether they’re closed or open kitchens.
I don’t want to actually talk to the people coming for the food, I just want to work in the kitchen and cook. Any advice or experience shared helps
Thank you

Need Advice/Recommendations Best way to dispose of a 65-inch TV?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice on how to dispose of a 65 inch TV. Can I schedule a city pickup for it, or is it something I can leave at the curb?

Unfortunately, my car is too small to take it to a recycling centre, so I’m trying to figure out what my options are. What’s the easiest/best way to get rid of a TV this size?

Thanks!

Need Advice/Recommendations Basement shower leak - need renovation help - [NIAGARA FALLS] ONTARIO

Basement shower leak – need reno help

Our basement shower has been leaking, and a few contractors say it wasn't waterproofed properly. We'll likely need to demo it, redo the plumbing, add proper waterproofing/shower base, and re-tile.

Does anyone know if Home Depot offers full-service demo, plumbing, and shower rebuild? Also curious about HD credit card financing — any 0% interest/deferred payment plans for projects like this?

Any recommendations or experiences appreciated!, can any group members gone through same situation & would like to provide any good references in niagara region it would be really awesome & great help please help me out i am new to Niagara thanks members
