Mechanical Help Tapping Noise

2011 Legacy 170k miles. It’s been around a while, maybe years. I figure I finally ask to get an idea what the sound could be. It’s audible only from inside and coming from the dashboard area. I thought it might be a belt noise but it isn’t heard from the outside of the car. Timing belt service was done 15,000 miles ago as well. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

My first thought was that you need oil but it’s coming from inside so my next thought is that you need a replacement heat fan. I can hear a squeak, which would drive me batty, that indicates a bearing has gone bad and the fan isn’t running on plumb center.

I am not a mechanic. I have replaced a heat fan in the cab of my Subaru, same squeak, no knock.

Does it change speed of the thumping ever? I can't tell from the video.

Can you tell where in the car it's coming from? Front/back, left/right, etc.

The sound is irregular rhythm most of the time. Sometimes it sounds more consistent rhythm but the sound is always present. It sounds to me like it’s coming from behind the instrument panel….

If you cycle through the HVAC positions (so face/feet/defrost) does it react at all?

Same question but with temperature buttons instead?

These are great questions. I repaired my HVAC a couple years ago, the positions weren’t changing—would only blow forward (arrow at head, position). But since the repair it has been switching to all positions successfully, but I haven’t changed them all year since winter, so I will get back to you after I double check them. Thanks for being here!!!

Is there not a dog bone torque strut thingy from the engine to the fire wall?
