I've gotten really interested in the dark side and history of America and I would like to read a book that could educate me thoroughly on all aspects of this topic.

I've watched Shutter Island, Inception, and The Prestige a bunch of times and want to try getting that same feeling from a book, but I've barely read fiction before, so I don't know where to start or what's actually "beginner friendly" in this genre.

What I like specifically: not just a surprise ending, but stories where you genuinely can't trust what's happening as you're reading it — unreliable narrators, timelines that don't add up, stuff that makes you go back and reread earlier chapters once you know the truth.

I'd rather start with one really good, accessible pick than a long list I won't get through. Bonus if it's not too long or dense for a first-timer.

Hi! I just watched the show Las Villamizar (Blood Ties) on netflix and I am looking for books with a similar plot. The show is about three sisters of the Spanish upper class in Colombia who join the liberation army (under Simon Bolivar) as spies after their mother is murdered by an officer of the Spanish army.

I'm curious about the best crime book you've ever read cuz I've been reading modern thrillers and they're just too predictable. The characters are black and white .

Honestly I think I just really liked Holly Jackson style . Her books introduced me to the genre and I really want to read Agatha Christie but I'm afraid I'm not gonna understand her writing style.

I recently had a conflict with a salesman at a car dealership in India. I was astounded by the sheer comfort with which he seemed to scam and deceive people. It made me want to read a book about the culture within these companies, ideally written by someone who has worked in sales.

I’m hoping to find something like a “Wolf of Wall Street” revelation - a book that exposes what goes on behind the scenes. Another video that comes to mind is the one featuring Robert Downey Jr. when he visited Wall Street.

Could you recommend me a book with strong ending? Imagine, Bradley Cooper in Silver linings playbook throwing Hemingway's novel out of the window. I was wondering if there's a book with ending that would make me feel this way.

For example it was well written, the story was great AND the ending was brilliant too, it was just tragic. The characters deserved better, you expected something completely different, etc. Something that made you feel emotional with capital E

I’m a beginner trying to get into reading, and I’m looking for interesting story-based books that make you constantly think, “Okay, what happens next?” — the kind that keeps you turning pages.

One problem: I don’t want books with very difficult or advanced English. I’ve tried Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver’s Travels, Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, etc., but I got tired of constantly searching for the meanings of words. Sometimes I skip difficult words, but then the story starts feeling unclear.

So I’d really appreciate recommendations for easy-to-understand English + an engaging story + lots of “I need to know what happens next” moments. 😭

I love any time, and i love our history. i will take anything about queerness and class. if i'm being greedy, i'll say some specifics. i would love to read books about the class differences in the communities, specifically how the culture differs between each class. i would love to read about classism and elitism in the communities. i would love to read about the political differences between classes if there any books like that! hmm.. yeah i think that's all for now!

TW: Loss due to Suicide

Friend took their own life. Family wont let me see the note addressed/mentioning me. Im just feeling devastated.

If you've gone through this type of loss, were there any books, fiction or nonfiction, that made you feel understood and seen?

Proust is my favorite author. And when I say Proust, I don't mean that I want novels about time or childhood memories or "long sentences and flowery prose" necessarily, although I like flowery prose and complex sentence-structure. I love his phenomneological view that comes out in his writing, meticulous detail, how he finds concepts and the eternal in everyday situations.

When looking for authors like him, I got two recommendations: Peter Nádas and Clarice Lispector.

Can anyone confirm or deny these recommendations I found on the internet or recommend other authors?

i tried gothic horror books, and even though i love the atmospheric macabre of it, i don't like the romantic/sexual aspects it tends to bring.

i like horror that has a a more cosmic and eldritch vibe. incomprehensible. horror focused more on solving the mystery of it and detailing danger that is just out of sight, not so much focused on characters themselves (i don't really care to get invested in individual characters, just the story and the worldbuilding and the concept). i like magical realism, haunting, xenofiction, and the occult, too (i am an occultist lol). weirdcore and soft/subtle comedy is good too in modest amounts!

i do NOT like mentions of romance or sex at all, especially third party situations, seduction, and coercive stuff. it's okay if a character who happens to be married kisses their spouse one time with nothing else or two characters like each other but the romance is not elaborated on or detailed at all, but those are exceptions. i'm a monogamous hopeless romantic, sure, but i don't find other people's love lives interesting and sex is generally repulsive to me. i also HATE excessive gore.

I really have been on a kick trying to find weird books that are either really absurd, goofy or odd in structure, tone, vibe and/or setting. I'm editing my novel and looking for some good books to help me out or simply entertain or inspire me a bit. For reference, I just finished Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Harumi Murakami, and I also love books like Life for Sale, Convenience Store Woman, My Year of Rest and Relaxation, Strange Weather in Tokyo, Tatami Galaxy or Beer in the Snooker Club.
