PSA: Sticky electrodes and skin burns

Recently, we've seen an increased interest in using tDCS devices with sticky electrodes (primarily because this is one of the default configurations of the foc.us GoFlow device which launched recently). Coincident with this, we've seen an increase in reports of injuries from sticky electrodes.

Compared to sponge electrodes, sticky electrodes seem to be much more likely to burn the skin during use. A typical electrode burn looks like one or more small “craters”, sometimes surrounded by an inflamed area.

Example 1

Example 2

The best solution to this is to avoid the sticky electrodes altogether. In most cases, even if a device ships with sticky electrodes, you can connect sponge electrodes do it whether directly or using an adapter. Our device matrix lists devices that are compatible with the (safer) sponge electrodes.

If you already have sticky electrodes and want to keep using them, a few things may reduce the risk:

  • Cleaning the skin with water and rubbing it with a towel to remove dirt and oil before applying the electrodes may provide a better connection and reduce “hotspots” that can lead to burns. Sticky electrodes should also be discarded when they become visibly dirty or difficult to stick.

  • Some devices like the focus V2 allow you to choose a maximum output voltage. Reducing the output voltage to the lowest setting may reduce the risk of injury by preventing the device from trying to drive too much current through a failing electrode.

  • Use the minimum current required for the effect you are trying to achieve.

  • tDCS electrodes should not produce pain that lasts for more than a minute or two. If this occurs, remove the electrode, check the site for injury.

I’m researching biofeedback devices - what should I know before buying one?

I’m currently researching professional biofeedback devices and realizing there’s a lot more to consider than I initially expected. For those who have bought and used one, what would you recommend looking at before making the investment?
I’m thinking about things like:

- reliability and ease of use
- quality of the measurements/data
- software and analysis options
- training or support from the manufacturer
- whether the system is practical in a professional setting
and, of course, whether it was worth the money long term
I’d appreciate hearing what you wish you had known before buying your system.

Hi. Has anyone ever done Tcas after a Qeeg for a theta healing protocol .

My issue is anticipatory anxiety that is terrible but no anxiety once I am at or doing an event that causes this.

Alpha stim aid gets less effective over time?

I recently got an alpha stim aid to complement by tcds routine. It works quite well at calming my brain down and helping me get more restful sleep when I'm burnt out. While that's hugely helpful for me I'm finding it's less and less effective every day. I have to turn it up to max power and use it for 1 hr to get the effects. If it gets any weaker it'll be hard to get any use out of it. Anyone dealt with this?

I'm almost considering getting an alpha stim m because I heard the power goes higher. On the other hand I'm not sure if your supposed to put it that high and don't want to do anything too crazy. It's got a lot of potential but this tolerance is bugging me

My question about learning skills :)

Hello everyone! I hope you are well :)

I have a question for the members of this group. The question is related to the use of tACS and tDCS non-invasive brain stimulation for the purpose of learning new skills.

There are 2 skills involved - singing and musical pitch.

  1. Can these two types of stimulation help in developing these two skills and which type of stimulation is more useful of the two?

  2. Which set parameters have the best impact on learning these two skills?

  3. Has anyone from this group tried stimulation for the purpose of learning these two skills on themselves? If so, what impact did it have on you?

Thanks in advance to everyone for the answers! Greetings! :)

P.S. - I am fully aware that no stimulation can replace hard work, work and exercise. That is by no means my goal. I would just like to know, from personal experiences and advice - could it help and be useful?

Is it safe to use Alpha-Stim AID with preexisting chronic tinnitus?

I would like to use Alpha-Stim AID to treat anxiety, but I have chronic tinnitus that runs 24/7 and I am worried about it getting worse with Alpha-Stim AID. I know there have been very few reports of worsening tinnitus after using Alpha-Stim AID, so it’s supposed to be uncommon?

How safe is using Alpha-Stim AID long term for someone with tinnitus?

Anyone with chronic tinnitus have successfully used Alpha-Stim AID log term without worsening their preexisting tinnitus?

Parents have spent a decade limiting their children's screen time to protect their brains. A new 8-year study found children with more screen time had better cognitive processing as teenagers.

For the past decade, limiting children's screen time has been one of parenting's most confident positions. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines. Schools have banned phones. Parents have negotiated, bargained, and enforced limits. The underlying assumption has been consistent: screens displace the activities that build children's brains, and more time on them means worse cognitive outcomes.

A research team at the Universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland decided to test that assumption longitudinally. They enrolled children at around age 7 and followed them for eight years, measuring their physical activity, sedentary behavior, and screen time at regular intervals. At the end of the follow-up, when participants were around 15 years old, they sat the children down and tested their cognitive performance using a validated battery measuring learning, attention, and working memory.

The children who had accumulated more screen time over those eight years did not score worse. They scored better.

The researchers say the finding does not mean unlimited screen time is harmless. But it does challenge the assumption that screen time and brain development are simply in opposition, and it raises a question that the decade of warning labels, app timers, and parental anxiety largely skipped over: what are children actually doing on those screens?

Has anyone gotten a qEEG for the purpose of TDCS?

I know people get it for neurofeedback but has anyone done it for TDCS?

And what are the advantages of TDCS over neurofeedback?

For people who own a consumer EEG device: has it actually been useful?

I’ve tried consumer EEG devices such as Emotiv and NeuroSky. The brain data is interesting, but the devices can be uncomfortable, and I’m still unsure what practical value the information provides.

With a Fitbit, WHOOP, or Oura Ring, the data can influence decisions such as when to rest, exercise, or sleep. Has EEG helped you make similar decisions about when to do focused work, take a break, or change your routine?

Decrease rate of distracting and intrusive thoughts

Background: My ADHD symptoms (and the related brain fog symptoms) include the "classic" ADHD: weak executive functions such as attentional control and task switching, and dysfunctional reward pathway due to anhedonia etc.;

However, they also include a high rate of unwanted thoughts - intrusive OCD thoughts, distractions, random questions, overplanning, etc. This puts additional strain on my executive functions, and I believe that's part of why they are so weak - they are constantly being overtaxed. It also adds to my feelings of derealization and significantly reduces task performance and enjoyment, because instead of engaging myself in the task, I am constantly re-re-re-re-re-re-reminding myself what I'm supposed to be focusing on, where I'm supposed to be looking, what my hands are supposed to be doing, etc. It takes me a long time to get engaged in something (perhaps another topic to work on), and the fraction-of-a-second stretches of time I'm getting these days just aren't doin' it, believe it or not.

For that reason I think, in addition to options like the focus and/or DARPA montages, something to calm the speed of those distractions a bit would be a key part of helping me focus and get things done, as well as improve my life outside those goals.

I think this may be a big ask, for me at least, because I don't really know the source, and it could be things like inflammation, dysregulation (including electrolyte and fluid balance), a reaction to chronic sleep issues, rather than an over- or under-activity of a physical brain region.

Still, anyone have recommendations for this? Montages that have worked for you (I have a neuromyst pro+ w/ tDCS, tACS, tCFS, and tPCS)? Research I should read?

I appreciate any help or ideas you have for me!

Braindriver Sensor Not Working?

Hi all, quite new to tdcs. Just recieved a braindriver 2.1. The manual says there's a sensor that pauzes the session if the electrodes are not connecting or are not worn properly. But the timer still continues even if i take the electrodes off, it even keeps going if i disconnect the cable from the device. Anyone else here has a braindriver that does the same?

Is the flow device just not usable in the usa?

According to the web site it isn't even available yet, and will require a prescription. My next thought was buying one from Europe but I'm hearing they might be geolocked? Has anyone in the us successfully used one? Its pretty ridiculous the hoops I have to jump through to use something that's over the counter in Europe. I thought they were supposed to be the less permissive ones.

apparently the platoworks headset also requires a doctor. it's really don't get it considering there are plenty of over the counter options that seem to be perfectly legal

you know what i might just get a Mave

Does anyone have or know a dr who has an interest in neuromodulation (TMS, tACS, tDCS etc)?

It’s an area of interest of mine, and I would like to get in contact with those in the field.

Selling Alpha Stim M (300 Euro, free shipping to EU, can ship worldwide for extra fee)

Alpha Stim M, works perfectly fine (tested all functions today). Used it for pain, which worked for me, but don't need it any more.

Scratches in plastic and plastic window on front is loose (hence the tape + lower price) - see pictures, especially the last two for this that I have tried to picture accurately.

Everything is included as seen in the pictures, that means all original parts parts plus:

- earclip electrode pads (plenty)

- probe electrode pads (plenty)

- two new, unused self adhesive electrode pads

- new batteries in the device

Not included:

- conducting solution (bottle empty, maybe two drips left, might be enough for trying once/not sure, I bought a new 250ml refill that I cannot find, but if I find it I will send it too, in other case this can be bought for approximately 15 euro.

Please feel feel to text me for questions or if you are interested in buying!

Pairing Flow Headset with ADHD meds

Hi! I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD and have been taking 40mg Ritalin daily for the last 2 years. I’ve just ordered a Flow headset and am wondering how others have combined the two, and if anyone has any recommendations based on their experience. E.g. whether I should reduce my Ritalin dosage if I’m doing a flow session? Or only do a flow session in the morning before taking Ritalin / at night when I’m sure the Ritalin has worn off? Any help would be much appreciated.
