Finally, can we start talking about magic numbers?
It’s time. Grab a calculator, an abacus or a crayon for prison wall hash marks.
We are hours away from entering the final month of the regular season, and the Rays are leading the American League East. That means it is now permissible to study the MLB standings intently each morning to figure out Tampa Bay’s magic number.
For the less optimistic among us, we’ll begin with a low bar:
What will it take to clinch a wild card?
Right now, any combination of 12 wins by the Rays or 12 losses by the Guardians or Orioles would clinch a playoff spot. (The Orioles at most can win 93 games, but because they won the season series against Tampa Bay, the Rays would need to finish one game ahead of Baltimore to avoid a tiebreaker.)
This means, if you’re planning a celebration at Ferg’s or the Press Box, the Rays will likely clinch a playoff spot in the middle of next week.
So, what will it take to clinch the AL East?
This one comes with an asterisk. Technically, Tampa Bay’s magic number is 22. But that’s only if the Rays drop all four of their remaining games against the Yankees (Sept. 22-24), which would mean they lose the season series and the tiebreaker. Realistically, their magic number is 21 this morning.
You might argue that it’s too soon to be worrying about magic numbers in the 20s. I don’t disagree, but the best part of a baseball season is counting down victories in September. In some ways, it’s even better than playoff games because it’s like a four-week celebration. Kind of akin to the anticipation of Christmas rather than the actual day.
Now, I realize some will accuse me of jumping the gun here. And I get that. Nobody wants to tempt fate.
If it makes you feel better, Baseball Prospectus and FanGraphs have Tampa Bay’s chances of winning the AL East at roughly 82% to 83%. I don’t have the brainpower to match their computer programs, but I did spend a little time (albeit while watching "Lioness" last night) studying pennant races. And recent history says Tampa Bay’s odds of winning the division are closer to 90%.
I checked the standings on this date for the last 10 full seasons to determine how many teams in first place on Aug. 31 went on to win the division. Granted, that’s not the most scientific method. The number of games remaining on Aug. 31 will vary slightly from season to season. And I’m not taking into account strength of schedule, either.
But the results are definitely encouraging.
Of the 60 teams sitting on top of the division heading into September, 54 eventually got the job done. Of the six that came up short, five of them had leads of four games or less on Aug. 31. As of this morning, the Rays have a 4 ½-game lead in the East.
The only time a team blew a truly large lead was last season, when the Tigers gagged away a 9 ½-game advantage in the final month. Even then, Detroit earned a wild card and went on to beat Cleveland to advance to the division series.
So, is any of this actual, bona fide, useful information?
Ah, not really.
But the baseball season is so long and involves so much frustration, it’s important that we appreciate the good times when they’re right in front of us. And, between the stadium deal and three days of unlikely comebacks against the Padres, this was among the finest weeks in Rays history.
And there’s still more to come.

Just saw this on the broadcast thought this was pretty cool. Obviously you win most games leading after 8 but we literally haven’t choked a game heading into the ninth I just thought that was insane. Shows how strong our bullpen especially Bryan Baker has been.

my guess is no. Maybe a throwback in 15 years.

I’ve been to all 30 ballparks. I’d say this upper deck has one of the best views of all of them. wish they’d leave it open but get it.
