Asking anyone whose good with cooking: is there a way to make a Mother's Delight IRL....but make it good?

Context: in S4E8, the players were tasked to make the most exotic sandwich and then eat it in the quickest time. Joe Lycett put kumquat, a sausage roll, smoked trout, a yam, tequila, pomegranate and I believe fresh mozzarella in a blender, making a choppy/uneven spread; added cheese and maybe chorizo and arugula for additional filling; put them on a double decker of baguette bread with an Arctic Roll for some sort of garnish or to prop it up (the Roll itself had apricot for a garnish) and named the whole thing "The Mother's Delight".

While Joe said it was delicious, he also could not finish it and said during the live taping that its corners were "fucking horrible". However, I am a food terrorist and am deeply intrigued by the conflicting flavors and ideas with this sandwich. I want to make it for myself, but I also want it to be an actual sandwich with, y'know, complimentary flavors.

Does anyone who is better with cooking than me have any tips on how to approach remaking this sandwich without making it that much of a disaster.

Some notes on the ingredients:

  • He would've preferred the yam to be cooked.
  • You don't need much tequila.
  • I don't believe the Arctic Roll was blended
  • Cumquat was also used as a garnish for the sandwich.
  • Red pesto, a spring roll and "Equadorian" dark chocolate were also on the table, but it's not apparent if he used them on the sandwich or not.

Edit: Apparently what Joe calls a "yam" is actually a sweet potato. TIL that a sweet potato and a yam are not the same thing. My American ass thought they were interchangable.

Confirmed that OP is not interested in Racial Harmony.

As a black person, I much do not like Racial Harmony.

Edit: In all seriousness a kebab with strawberry jam sounds delicious. It's just vague what is in the kebab. But, unless I'm mistaken, it's mostly meat right? Jam with meat sounds delicious.

> • I don't believe the Arctic Roll

What does this mean? Is it lying to you?

Time for drilling down into the narrative!

Lol. Typo. I think I was going to say "I don't believe the Arctic Roll was blended", like it's not clear if he only had one or if he had several and one of them were put in the blender too

I too am perplexed by this statement. OP needs to answer for this.

Just nip down to M&S and buy a sandwich that Desky made, bud.

Naw, that was Hugh Dennis' sandwich (which also looks perfect but is much less inscrutable to figure out)

i would roast a sweet potato and mash it up separately with a tequila and pomegrante molasses reduction to make a spread. then make a kumquat smoket trout tonnato to drizzle. slice up spanish chorizo and sausage from the roll and mozz to be your meat and cheese. arugula as your lettuce.

Yams in the UK are not what we call yams in the US, i.e. they're not sweet potatoes. Not sure if that would affect the preferred preparation, but it would definitely affect the taste of the final product.

I think the confusion comes from the terms "yam" and "sweet potato" both being applied to sweet potatoes in the US. As I understand it, slaves taken from Africa were familiar with the tuber known as a yam, but in the US, where the yam didn't exist, sweet potatoes came to be called yams because they're similar.

Kind of like how when American colonists first encountered a honking big deer they called it an elk, which is the biggest deer in Europe, even though they'd found a wapiti, so when they found actual elk, they called them moose.

Or like how in Australia, they have a bird called a magpie that isn't a corvid, it just kind of looks like a magpie.

in the uk that linguistic crossover was carried into the country by the west indian/caribbean diaspora.

that is a sweet potato. not a yam.

First, thank you for distinguishing yams and sweet potatoes in the replies.
Second, this sounds so yummy. In your opinion, would an Arctic Roll/apricot combo pair nicely with this sandwich?

(Also, full disclosure, I'm allergic to fish but as I understand a tonnato necessarily has fish. How else might one use the kumquat?)

Maybe heat, blend, and reduce the fruits and tequila to make a sauce to very lightly add to the rest of the sandwich ingredients.

When you say the fruits do you also include the root vegetables or just the kumquat, pomegranate and apricot? Also, what else could I use the sauce for since it sounds like I'd have a lot left over.

I would leave out the yam from the sauce. I’d probably bake that separately, spice it, and add it into the meat, cheese, and arugula of the sandwich. My biggest hang-up is the trout. I couldn’t imagine it playing very well with the other things.

Well good news, the trout would most likely be excised anyway because I'm allergic!

What spices would you recommend? Both for the yam but also the sauce

I’d treat the yams like potatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper, rosemary, and thyme. For the sauce, maybe chili powder or tajin for a little heat.

This is a fun experiment you are doing. I would love a follow up post after you’ve made your dish to know how it went.

Ed should have brought this up to the Fallow lads when he went there sampling a fuckton of Wellingtons a while back.

I feel like if you don't blend those things and adjust the ratios, it could be okay

3

u/RegimentOfOne 1d ago

Slight tangent, but when Joe put these things in the blender, was that the same blender that failed to blitz his camel after Hugh Dennis's attempt to blitz a camel broke it?

What kind of quat?

Ya know qwhat, I'm not gonna edit it. It's much funnier as is.
