Open | Software College Internet Issues

i recently moved into my college dorm and i’ve been having weird internet issues. i’m using ethernet and it says it’s connected, but any time i try to use a browser it cuts out. i’m on a clean boot and when nothing is running i get about 900 Mbps, but as soon as i open a browser i get nothing. i’ve registered my mac address with the school, tried several browsers, flushed dns, updated drivers, did a network reset, still nothing. i’ve had 2 IT people from the school look at it and they did everything they could and still didn’t figure it out. i’ve tried all the wifi networks, same issue. i’m completely at a loss. also online games work, but surfshark doesn’t??? i had issues in the past with slow speeds in browsers but here i get nothing at all. i’m very confused and looking for any help. thank you.

Can you try to connect your phone using a USB dongle if you have one to then allow you to carry out a speed test / network check assuming you don't have another computer to test with? Failing that or if you have access to a router you could plug that into the ethernet connection and use it to test the connection. If you connect your phone to your PC does the internet work normally?

it works perfectly fine when i connect to my phones hotspot. i know my ethernet port works, i used it at my home a few days ago. i also know my cable and the wall port both work, IT tested them. i’m thinking it’s some sort of software issue related to web browsing, but im running a fresh install of brave and deleted all other browsers (other than edge because it won’t let me delete it) so idk what the specific software issue is. i also have a speed test application installed to my pc and the speeds are fine except when i open a browser, then i get no internet.

Can you try Incognito mode in the browsers to see if that makes a difference, also could you try opening a command prompt and try to ping 8.8.8.8 to confirm if DNS settings are correct.

okay i have no idea how this happened but after i connected to my hotspot and went back to ethernet it just works now. i’ve been troubleshooting for the last 2 days and now it just works. i restarted my pc to make sure it’s permanent and it still works. if you have any explanation as to how this happened im all ears but honestly im just happy knowing it works.

It is always DNS, even when it is not.
