Internet - Fibre High latency with Cloudflare DNS

Hi guys,

I'm with Teksavvy in Montreal, and noticed latency has increased towards Cloudflare DNS servers, it went from 1ms to very fluctuating ping to 1.1.1.1.

Here is a screenshot:

Using a UCG-fiber

I did a traceroute and the traffic goes to Toronto before reaching Cloudflare, which was not the case when I subscribed.

Has anyone noticed that?

Internet - Cable Need some advice about getting a different modem

I have had Teksavvy just over a month.

I have noticed occasional lag , say when I send a small document to be printed. And, if I have been out of the house and used my cell phone provider data, when I come back I have to restart my phone to get it to connect to my home wifi properly. And, ocassionally there is a lag in internet service, and I had one occasion where my devices lost their link to the modem and I had to set them all up again.

After looking for modem advice here, I see the Technicolor TC4400 discussed often, however the posts are a bit dated and it seems that is tech is tired and they aren't available anyway. What I am not seeing is 'x model works'.

Yes, I have the list of recommended gear from Teksavvy.

My needs are not that intense, I tend to play a youtube or tubi video in the background while I am working on a document or doing a bit of surfing. I don't do any online gaming that require asap response.

I have also seen the recent discussion about us all being hooped, basically, because Rogers/Shaw limits the approved modems to crappy ones with issues.

Have I missed something?

If anyone can recommend a modem that is reliable, I would appreciate it.

(If it matters I escaped from Telus to come to Teksavvy, because Telus treated me so badly I will only ever use them again if I have no other choice. Though, to be fair, I am hearing dealing with Shawgers isn't any better.)

I have Teksavvy connected through the Shawgers coax, 100 up and 100 down, which is overkill for my needs - I will have a security camera set up I want to be able to access remotely and I just picked that as a starting point, no contract has its benefits - so I can change my service later when I know what I need for sure.

Helpful advice and bad news equally appreciated. I am after reliable service, that's it.

What are people happy with?

TIA

I

Internet - Cable If Teksavvy reports running internet through the lines, you had internet. Here's what's going on for us Canadians, from a very disheartened Canadian...

I activated service with Tekksavvy July 15. I was a Shaw/Rogers customer for years. I unplugged their modem in exchange for a tekksavvy modem and I have not had usable or reliable internet since. I made another post on this subreddit. But usable/reliable is not subjective (pings over 3000, multiple modem failures/day). I have complied with every one of Teksavvy's troubleshooting steps.

Teksavy customer service maintains that my internet is fine, I was provided service and they only provide credits for complete disconnections. Technical support has acknowledged the issues based on the data but has no viable solution.

Essentially, regardless of if you are able to use the internet, if they claim it ran through the lines. They have fulfilled their end.

After extensive time, stress and research, I have pieced together the bigger picture and I hope this helps anyone in a battle with Teksavvy or any of the third party ISP's in Canada. Or considering making the switch.

  1. Wholesale prices are high

  2. The third parties often blame the main providers for the approved modem list. However, there are other modems on the list that do not contain the same Puma 6 or 7 chip.

  3. Teksavvy does not have margin to absorb this cost and therefore maintains that the documented reports on Hitron modems and Puma chips aren't accurate

  4. Teksavvy lists the modem at a complimentary rental to avoid legal accountability for the reliability. 'You have the option to purchase your own' becomes a reasonable resolution.

  5. Teksavvy strictly avoids accountability for speeds and stability

  6. Tekksavvy prices their 500mb and 1GB plan very strategically for a reason - I continue to be billed for a speed that has not been provided. I average 300-500GB on a wired ethernet connection. They are capped at 1.5 GB from the main providers. In high traffic areas, Teksavy knows most customers won't see 1 GB. The TOS states a 500mb minimum (standard with most providers) - I do not even average this. But, conveniently, 500mb is priced the same, so I remain stuck at the same price or in a battle for speeds that won't exist. Convenient right?

  7. Tekavvy prices their initial 1 yr at promo pricing. I was told that at renewal, you will not ever see that price again. The regular price listed is far from competitive even with reliable service.

  8. Teksavvy has maintained that purchasing a new modem would be my choice based on my 'preferences' and denies the necessity to facilitate their ability to deliver service. When I visited both my local Staples and Best Buy, both advised they do not sell modems as ISP's are responsible for providing them. I understand that I can purchase one elsewhere. My point is that the position Teksavvy has taken is not aligned with standard practice in Canada.

  9. Teksavvy relies on consumer ignorance. If you are not a gamer, streamer or multi device household, you may not notice the issues in your every day use. It doesn't mean they do not exist - hence the mixed reports on this subreddit alone. If you are not a total nerd who will do the research like myself, you may also not be running the reports that reveal the truth.

10. Do not forget, their wholesaler is their competitor and as consumers, we are stuck in between.

I have repeatedly asked Teksavvy to work together on resolutions. The arrogance from the management team is an entire post in itself; they have failed to make any meaningful progress on fixing the technical issues or resolving the billing.

In BC, Carrytel offer a 1GB plan for $59.99 (79.99 after 1 yr) and will provide a Technicolour 4400 Modem (Non Puma chip) plus mesh wireless router. At this point, I am beyond frustrated after this 6 week battle and I will likely return to Shaw because of the known reliability, but I have no doubt that eliminating a modem with a processor that cannot handle congested lines, would resolve stability issues issues. If Teksavvy further gaslights in the comments (as they tend to do), I encourage you to do your own research on the modems they provide.

Here is the reality. The wholesalers, like the consumers are at the whim of the big boys. One of two choices : be a victim to being forced with the top 3 Rogers, Bell, Telus or be a victim to paying the same (if not higher) rates for unreliable/unstable internet with companies that lack the same integrity?

I will leave my political 2 cents out of this one. But hopefully this helps someone.

Internet - Cable Low hanging cable line.

Who do I get in contact with to fix a low hanging line, both the power line and cable, phone, fiber) lines are hanging very low. we are getting in contact with our power company, but there’s a possibility that they will only fix the power lines. Do I call rogers or bell? Or will the power company do it themselves?

TV www.teksavvy.com has a web site certificate problem

My chrome browser is not happy with the teksavvy web site. Sometimes it reports a certificate problem, other times appears to work, but things like the chat link don't do anything. (I'm trying to get to the TV channel listing.)

The mysavvy subnet doesn't have the problem.

Curl says:

Internet - Cable Wifi has been bad, advice needed

Got the 1 gb plan during the back to school sale and having issues with the stability of the connection. Wifi speeds seem fine devices are getting constant 100-300 download speeds but the connection is so unreliable.

Example of two people are using the wifi the other can’t. So while roommate was watching YouTube I was constantly taken of the wifi while playing online and it only got semi stable once he left the apartment (game was league).

Same thing happens when on my Mac, wifi just stops working every 5 minutes.

Is there anyway to make this better like go shopping for a better router or just I look for another provider. Ethernet would only make my pc stable but not my other electronics. Or is the issue the cable itself ?

Internet - Cable What is Teksavvy's current policy on internet contract renewals?

I really have no interest in having to fight them tooth and nail every year when the contract comes up for renewal and their 'regular' monthly prices are, of course, noncompetitive (worse even than the big 3).

So if its going to a song and dance every year I'd probably rather just avoid them entirely despite wanting to support them over shawgers or telus or bell...

Internet - Cable Changed my Teksavvy plan from 100/30 cable to 100/100

I had the 100/30 plan grandfathered and I noticed there's now a 100/100 plan at the same price so I changed my service.

I got the confirmation email and restarted my modem a few times but so far my upload is still at 30 Mbps.

I have a Technicolor TC4400. I haven't been able to reach support. AI thinks that my specific modem might not support the full 100 upload anyway and it may be limited to 30 or 50 due to Rogers profile.

It suggests I upgrade to a modem that like the Hitron CODA-56 which I'm okay with but I don't care that much about my upload. I just want confirmation that this is the case.

If I can get 50 upload I'd prolly be okay to leave it even.

I'm in Markham, Ontario.

Anyone experience anything similar?

Edit:

Issue resolved after a change on Teksavvy end and a modem restart.

Internet - Fibre VNC services blocked?

Sometimes I use VNC to connect to my PC remotely to perform administrative functions while out of town (Using RealVNC server).

For the first time in months since I last did this, I’m unable to connect despite turning off windows firewall, adding port rule exceptions in the both windows firewall and on the local modem portal. I can only connect while on the same network. The PC is connected directly to the modem so no router as the middleman.

Is Teksavvy/Bell actively blocking services like VNC now?

Internet - Cable Buyer beware

I don’t even know where to begin other than suggesting you educate yourself if you’re trying to save some $ on internet. I was a Shaw customer for years with very stable internet but after the last price increase, and demand that I sign a contract, I decided to give one of the resellers a try.

TekSavvy rate for 1gb is well over $100. Comparable to most big providers.

They provide the absolute CHEAPEST hardware (modem and router). It’s been 3 weeks of up to 40% packet loss, speeds anywhere from 17mbps to 900 mbps, router overheating and disconnect… there is a VERY obvious pattern of timing. Evenings are worse because of the traffic using the lines. The modem TekkSavvy provides is notorious for struggling.

I requested a better modem. Yesterday, ANOTHER 4680 shows up.

Guess what? Same issues. If not worse. I ask to speak with a supervisor and they tell me it’s a long wait and someone will call me back. No one does.

They continue to send me bills. I’ve NEVER had working internet and they just AVOID.

I’ll be reporting to the telecommunications board today and going back to one of the bigger providers who are willing to provide the appropriate hardware

UPDATE - 2nd day in a row they have no showed to come check my lines and a manager told me ‘I have internet and it’s not their fault that it’s not up to my standards.’ When I suggested that a 3000Plus ping on the up followed by several timeouts is not normal.. silence.

Internet - Fibre There has to be something else that can be done, day 2 of waiting 8am-5pm for tech to no show.

Please, can anyone on here who works for teksavvy tell me if there's anything else I can do to make sure someone comes to hook my fibre internet up? It's been two weeks, and now this is the 2nd day I've tried scheduling someone to come and they tell me 8am-5pm, and no one is showing up and I'm being told absolutely nothing other than to reschedule another day. Someone was supposed to come between those hours on Monday, no one showed up, nothing could be told to me so I rescheduled for today and now no one showed up again. My whole day, gone.I can't waste another entire day at home waiting for people who don't even show. It's a waste of my time, and money. It literally will take them 20 minutes to set it up, it's already half done. This is getting absurd. Someone help!

TV PSA: How Simple Remote Setup actually works on the TekSavvy Maxi ATV remote (+ combos, troubleshooting, freeze fix)

PART1: Programming an Amino Maxi ATV Remote / TekSavvy Amigo 7Y Box (general reference, any TV)

TL;DR: General reference for the TekSavvy Amino Amigo 7Y box and its Maxi ATV (BLE) remote — button combos, setup steps, and quirks that apply regardless of which TV brand you're pairing it to.

Equipment

  • Box: Amino Amigo 7Y Android TV box (TekSavvy's set-top box).
  • Remote: Amino Maxi ATV (BLE), model TZH-213D — also sold as the OEM remote for Polaroid and DEXP TVs. Generic shared design, not unique to any one brand.

How to get into Simple Remote Setup

  1. On the TekSavvy app guide screen, press the up arrow until the top selection bar appears. Select the Settings icon (top right), then System: Android Settings (at the bottom of the list), then Remotes and Accessories, then TekSavvy TV Remote, then Simple Setup.(This can also be accessed directly from the Android home screen: Settings icon (top right), then Remotes and Accessories, then TekSavvy TV Remote, then Simple Remote Setup.)
  2. You'll see a list of connected devices/remotes; select the TekSavvy (Maxi) remote from the list.
  3. Choose "Simple Setup." This opens the Simple Remote Setup app.
  4. In the app: scroll up/down to move through TV brand names, and left/right to jump to a different starting letter (e.g. jump to "P" for Polaroid).
  5. Select a brand. You'll be prompted to hold the Mute button.
  6. A circular loading/progress bar appears, cycling through each code for that brand one at a time.
  7. Hold Mute and watch the TV closely, not just listen, and release as soon as the TV visibly reacts (mutes, flashes, or responds in any way). That saves the current code.

Confirmed working button combos on this remote

  • Menu + 1: switch remote to IR mode (STB/blue light flashes twice)
  • Menu + 2: switch remote to RF/BLE mode (blue light flashes twice)
  • Menu + 3: route volume/mute to the TV instead of the STB (TV/AUX light flashes twice)
  • Menu + 4: route volume/mute to the STB (blue light flashes twice)
  • Pairing to the box: hold OK, then Menu, until you get 2 flashes, release (blue light stays lit), then hold Menu + OK together to confirm.
  • Factory reset: hold 1 + 6 for 3+ seconds until TV/AUX flashes twice and stays on, then key in 9-8-1. STB light flashes twice to confirm. Wipes it back to unpaired/Bluetooth mode.

Dead end: IR Learning mode

The manual documents 4 + 6 (hold 3+ sec) as "IR Learning," which is supposed to let the remote clone a code straight from your TV's original remote. It never worked at all, even right after a full factory reset. Since every other hold-combo on this same unit worked fine, this points to IR Learning being disabled or non-functional in this firmware build, not user error.

Also worth knowing: older generic Amino manuals floating around online reference a "1 + 3" brand-code search and manual numeric code entry. That does not exist on this remote/firmware. That's a leftover feature from older Amino remotes with physical number pads (Lima/Oak models). The Maxi ATV replaced all of that with the Simple Setup app.

Troubleshooting quirks worth knowing

  • The remote can freeze after cycling through a lot of codes back to back during brand searching. Symptom: button-hold combos stop giving any flash response at all.
  • Fix: pull one battery out, put it back in, then re-pair to the box (OK, then Menu, until 2 flashes, release, then Menu+OK to confirm). This clears the stuck state.
  • Before every new brand attempt, it's worth quickly checking that 1+6 (factory reset entry) still responds. If it doesn't, do the battery pull first so you're not wasting time troubleshooting a brand when it's actually just a frozen remote.
  • The STB's IR receiver will visibly flash at any IR signal it detects, including ones meant for the TV. That's normal behavior, not a sign of interference or crossed wiring.

TLDR: I'm posting this here to shed some light on this process. Reddit is usually crawled by search engines and AI, so this information will get scraped as a source for at least some information on setting up a TekSavvy remote.

PART2: Finding a working remote code for a Curtis-built RCA TV (RLDED3955A-E) — full troubleshooting log

TL;DR: Got volume/mute/power working via brand-code search, but volume ended up reversed and TV input control never worked, across four different "matching" brand codes. Sharing everything I found in case it helps someone else with a similar setup.

Equipment

  • TV: RCA RLDED3955A-E, 39" LED, imported by Curtis International Ltd. Mainboard is labeled MSAV32 (chip M21/G42049/11, MStar-based).
  • The TV's own manual claims it uses the NEC universal remote protocol. In practice, this code did not work.

Background, why this was such a pain

RCA today is just a licensed trademark, not an actual manufacturer. Curtis International licenses the name and builds TVs from generic, mass-produced reference chassis sourced from Chinese/Taiwanese OEM factories. The remote itself is a separate commodity part sold to multiple unrelated brands: the same exact remote (TZH-213D) ships under RCA, Polaroid, and DEXP branding.

Net result: there's no single reliable "RCA code." Even Curtis's own support says they don't maintain a working code list and tell people to just use the search/auto-detect function.

Brand search results

Brand Result Volume TV Input Mute/Power
Polaroid 2 codes found Reversed Broken Working
Craig 1 code found Reversed Broken Working
Element 1 to 2 codes found (uncertain) Reversed Broken Working
Sansui 1 code found Reversed Broken Working
Sony No hits N/A N/A N/A
Sanyo No hits N/A N/A N/A
JVC No hits N/A N/A N/A
Emerson No hits N/A N/A N/A
Panasonic No hits N/A N/A N/A
Sylvania No hits N/A N/A N/A
Funai No hits N/A N/A N/A

Every single working code produced the identical result: mute/power fine, volume direction reversed, TV input broken. Strongly suggests the TV's real protocol is some generic budget chipset that these four brand entries all approximate but never exactly match. Likely the practical ceiling for brand-guessing here.

Reference: universal remote code lists (not enterable on this remote, for reference/other remotes only)

Pulled from one consistent database so numbering is comparable across brands:

  • Polaroid: 1326, 1523, 1524, 1687, 1769, 4035, 10865, 11276, 11314, 11498, 11523, 11766, 12002, 12121
  • Element: 01815, 1687, 1886, 2183, 2964, 3559, 11886, 12183, 24912, 34211, 34611, 45112, 70017, 72015, 79517, 81918
  • Sansui: 0171, 0463, 1670, 1892, 3540, 3559, 3564, 4053, 10171, 10463, 11409, 11892
  • Craig: 3423 (only code documented anywhere for this brand)

Interesting overlap: code 1687 shows up in both Polaroid and Element's lists. Code 3559 shows up in both Element and Sansui's lists. This lines up with Element being the brand where I wasn't sure if I'd gotten 1 or 2 hits — its code set apparently spans two different generic protocol families that also show up individually under Polaroid and Sansui.

Unconfirmed theory: if the setup wizard cycles codes in ascending order grouped by digit length, my two Polaroid hits (1st code overall, 2nd to last code) would line up with 1326 and 12002 in the list above. Plausible pattern match, not confirmed. No visibility into the box's actual internal code database.

Where I landed

Any of the four working brand codes gives fully working power, mute, and volume level control, just with up/down reversed, and no TV input switching via the remote. Given four independent brands all converged on the exact same result, this is likely the real ceiling for this remote/TV pairing without hardware-level intervention.

Edit: This is a very specific situation when it comes to the model of TV and remote. That said, there is a lot of information here that can help you with other combinations of hardware, especially if you have an RCA TV designed by Curtis International (found on the back of the TV, by the model sticker). Even if it's not an RCA, the troubleshooting steps will make the whole process quicker.

Tip: Take your TV model and put it into Gemini. Ask Gemini whether the TV brand is actually made by that brand, or if it's made by another company that manufactures TVs for many brands and just slaps a logo on it. If it's the latter, try those companies as well. Chances are the TV might have been made for one brand originally, and then the blueprints were used for a few other brands in different regions, where they just changed the brand logo. This also applies to remotes.

TLDR: I'm posting this here to shed some light on this process. Reddit is usually crawled by search engines and AI, so this information will get scraped as a source for at least some information on setting up a remote for this TV.
