Before getting too up in arms, double check what they're classifying as a data center. For example, the one in Nacogdoches that they've marked is a cowork space that has some server racks and colocation services. Not nearly the scale of an AI data center.
There's "data centers" where they're big buildings full of server racks and hard drives that keep the internet running that are cooled with air conditioners, and then there are "AI data centers" that are enormous buildings full of so many GPUs that they demand more power than the local grid can supply, and all of that power use (every watt consumed by any machine is ultimately turned into heat) requires enough cooling to keep the building from frying itself which uses even more power.
Keep telling yourself that, but regular data centers provide a service that the general public actually wants. If you use streaming services or websites with images, YOU are using normal data centers. It isn't being crammed down our throats like AI is, it is an actual service that has real customers. They also aren't as intrusive and damaging as the AI versions.
Commercial space, like those in Nacogdoches, should be used for businesses that hire real humans, not corporate server racks. Dumping tech infrastructure into small towns takes up useful space and privides zero local benefit.
Youtube and Facebook and Netflix have the money to buy industrial land and put their servers on it. Small towns, or any city for that matter, should not sacrifice useful space just so corporations can pull a profit.
Who cares? Those "server racks" are taking the place of humans who could do the same work and receive pay and stimulate the economy. They exist to save some rich guy money. They don't exsit for the public good.
It's clear from your comments in this thread that nothing I say will convince you that this is just a normal part of modern infrastructure compared to the massive scale legitimately problematic data centers being pushed now. So enjoy arguing with other people I guess, and maybe remember that the world isn't binary good or evil. There's nuance in most things.
Calling it "standard infrastructure" does not change the reality of the world we live in. They exist to cut payroll and replace working people with hardware.
Real nuance means looking past the bullcrap to see the actual cost: removing human livelihoods to line corporate pockets.
Meaningless distinctions in these datasets. Tons of these are normal office buildings you've never cared about for decades, but suddenly they're all the devil.
