Meta - Standard Voting (Re)Introducing - Quality Vote Bot: Reborn!

Hey everyone!

So for those of you who have been here a while, many may remember a bot called "Quality Vote Bot" that left a pinned message in every post's comments, and you all could vote on the bot, since voting is reversed for the actual post if you Agree/Disagree.

Sadly a couple years back, the bot was deactivated, and we went back to just the automod reminding everyone of our Golden Rule (rule 1); Upvote if you disagree—Downvote if you agree.

Well, I am very pleased to announce that it's successor, Quality Vote Bot Reborn has now been activated and should do exactly what the original one did!

It should be noted, the bot is designed to help weed out 'bad' posts, not ones you simply disagree with opinion-wise, but ones that either don't make sense, break rules, or are just lame or potentially fabricated, trolling, lying, etc.

And of course, since this is a meta post, normal voting rules don't apply, but by all means, vote on the bot to see if it works. In a few hours, it will re-post it's comment saying what you all determined, and if it comes back negative, post will automatically be removed.

Society/Culture Gifting is overrated

I don’t see the point of gifting stuff to people especially friends and siblings your just basically circulating 20 bucks too and from each other if not less because some of it gets taken away by tax. I don’t see why I have to buy my friend something for their birthday that they don’t want or need just to signal that I care about them same with siblings.

Edit: just to be clear guys I mean like for Christmas or birthdays if you see something on holiday and it reminds you of your friend or you think your friend may like it sure go ahead I just think doing it on a forced calendar date means your doing it more because you have too rather then because you like them and from logical perspective you may buy something for someone that’s worth 50 dollars but to them it only has a value of 30 then they’ll buy you something worth 50 dollars that to you has a value of 20 so you would both maximise utility by just spending time with each other on their special day or whatever and then spending the money on whatever you want drugs and hookers etc

TV/Movies/Fiction Movies are the worst form of media possible

I genuinely do not understand what anyone enjoys about movies, they are probably the worst means by which to convey an idea. The duration of most movies (2h) means that the creators lack enough time to write a proper story and give it room to breath. That or they end up lacking substance and feeling vapid. On the other hand longer movies feel draining and boring, and I lose interest when ive already been sat down for 4 hours. The condensed format means they also leave the watcher no time to reflect on the movies happening, making them less thought provoking and interesting, along with a myriad of other negatives. I have watched many movies and there are some movies I have enjoyed, but that is in spite of them being movies and not because of it. What do so many people enjoy about movies?

Health/Safety It should be socially acceptable to pick your nose.

Wash your hands afterward, of course! Sometimes that stuff needs to get out of there, and blowing your nose doesn’t always get it all, y’know? Nothing else quite gets all the junk out that I’ve tried, q-tips can’t get the little flaky boogers that builds up and eventually clogs your nostrils. Also, people shouldn’t judge others for picking their nose in public, it’s no different than blowing your nose. With both cases you MUST wash your hands afterward, though.

Society/Culture If you don’t know how to cook nutritious and tasty meals for your children you’re a POS

Upvotes

If you and your partner conceive you both now have several years to learn how to cook healthy meals that taste delicious. There’s so many cooking shows on YouTube that it’s really not hard at all. Forcing your child to eat shit food for their entire childhood is basically child abuse to me. If you’re too fucking stupid to be able to put a goddamn soup together you shouldn’t have fucking kids.

Other Stubbing your toes does not hurt that much

Upvotes

From being barefoot to wearing boots. From lightly brushing against a table to kicking one at full speed accidentally. Stubbing your toe just doesn't hurt that much. Whenever I stub my toe it hurts a little and goes a little numb, but I'm able to continue moving and talking without any interruption. I've seen people fall to the ground after stubbing their toes, which is crazy to me.

Note before the comments flood in: I think my pain tolerance is quite average and I'm not trying to act tough, I just don't think stubbing your toe is that big of a deal. Same with hitting your hip against a doorframe--sure it hurts but you can push through it?

Edit: despite the comments, it's actually pretty interesting the amount of people who agree with me since rule #1 of this sub

Society/Culture Vegans are right

Upvotes

No, I know I’m about to get a lot of hate on this because I’ve said things like this before and I get downvoted into oblivion, but to start this off, I am not a vegan myself I eat meat. In fact me is probably my favorite type of food, but I still do think that vegans are probably at least partially correct that the world would be a better place if you stopped eating meat, respected animals more and treated them better now I do not like to eat things like veal or any sort of living squared like some people eat because I think that’s just a lot of unnecessary torture but I have no problem with eating normal steak or calamari. You can call me an asshole if you want. I probably am for this, but I don’t really care.

Other Job interviews are genuinely fun and I do them even when I've no plans to change jobs

1.5k Upvotes

Yes, I love job interviews. The whole idea of making a pitch about myself, dressing up nicely, and trying to improve my answers to the same generalist questions is exciting for me.

I’m very happy at my job today, but I still apply for positions in my industry about once every two months. For me, it feels like a trivia night game where the topic is my resume, and it gives me a huge confidence boost when I can decline a job offer I was accepted for.

Everyone thinks I’m crazy for that, but for me, it’s still a rush. I look forward to job interviews like they are a challenge I need to overcome

Other Cold Showers Feel Way Better Than Hot Showers

There are circumstances when hot showers feel good and circumstances where cold showers feel good.

I’m not saying that in all circumstances cold showers feel good. But in the cases where a cold shower is what you want (e.g. after an intense cardio workout on a hot day) it feels way better than the equivalent circumstance of taking a hot shower on a cold day.

Society/Culture Literally everyone defaults to insults when they get offended by an opinion they KNOW is correct.

I think it's funny when people are incapable of arguing a point, probably because they know that they don't even have one, so they just immediately resort to namecalling.

Having over 10 bodies is gross = "you're an incel"

I'd never waste my money on a car that won't even last as long as a Corolla = "just say you're broke"

I could beat you in a fight = "woah Tommy Toughknuckles over here"

Has anyone else noticed this shit?? Like, even if I literally disprove all of these insults above by saying "Well actually I have a girlfriend, I make over $100k/year, and I've been boxing for 3 years" = YoU'rE CoRnY bRo!!1!

All I hear when you say this stupid shit is that the other person is right, and you sure are mad they are!

TLDR: Death to Gen Z lmao.

And then because of this I assume all these people who likes the "privacy" are piss drinkers, one thing is disliking invasive systems accessing your private pictures, another is disliking people seeing your public posts, just delete it.

And I don't need to base everything on another person experience, one time I saw a user claiming they were a Quantum Physics Major, looking at their profiles it was JUST Roblox Posts with a single Quantum Physics question, clearly a nerdy kid pretending to be someone else.

Society/Culture Let's just get WW3 over with already.

It's increasingly obvious that a bunch of sad men with too much power all around the world desperately want to prove to eachother they're the ones with the biggest dick, and the rest of civilization will crumble during their epic show and tell match.

The anticipation is driving me crazy. Tensions are high everywhere. Just get it over with, and if anyone's left alive at least we can get focused on what really matters. Building a new world where grinding 60-70 hours a week is more than barely surviving. At this point Idgaf if we all end up speaking Chinese within a couple generations, as they're likely the ones to mop everything up, if they even participate. They seem to be the only major player more interested in economic growth than flexing their scrotums.

Technology Clicking vs smooth adjustment

I will preface this by saying that I’m not fully sure if this is a popular or unpopular opinion: I HATE when things are adjustable but have a smooth way of doing it instead of clicks.

The most obvious one is headphones. When you adjust the headband and it’s smooth, instead of a ratcheting way, it’s just worse. It’s the main gripe I have with my Sony Wh1000xm5’s.

I do want to add that this doesn’t only bother me on headphones, but knobs, a lamps swivel, everything.
I just like the feedback and on a lot of things I feel like the smooth one will eventually sag.

Edit: I’m kinda glad to get downvoted cuz for a second there I thought I was crazy for being the only one.

Sports Volleyball should be filmed tennis style.

By tennis style I mean the camera should be facing the net and the players backs. A lot of volleyball is filmed from the side even when filming/watching from the back is better. Every other net sport is broadcast from the back like tennis, badminton, table tennis, and beach volleyball even. It's more immersive, closer to player perspective and also much more zoomed in.

I think the only reason it's filmed the way it is is because it uses the camera system for basketball courts. But this system loses horizontal depth and is generally filmed much further away. I still think it's good for some shots but tennis style should be the main angle for indoor volleyball.

edit: Just to clarify the angle should be high enough to see both sides clearly, not just the players backs. example

Music Concerts with quiet audience are so much more enjoyable to me

I've liked listening to music like this. At home, I can't stand it if my family is making noise. I specifically like to take time out of my day to either stare a wall or close my eyes, sitting/lying in one place with just the sound of music in the room. I really like to just soak it in. Idk I feel I'm in a trance state, almost like I'm meditating.

My dad once surprised me to an ed sheeran concert. Granted, I actually am not a fan but my dad was damn excited so I just went along. The music was nice but I felt so oddly stimulated. I was standing was hours, people shouting/singing around me and although there was enough space among us, I felt so suffocated.

I wish there was a concept of quiet concerts too. Everyone seated and quiet. Only the sound of music throughout the room. You can really catch every single detail and like all the intricate and subtle sounds of instruments that get lost in the loudness. I don't know why people think it has to be boring. Music in itself can be very immersive.

Recently I saw a sort of concert video where it was a big stadium like hall with the musicians in the center with their instruments. Everyone was seated. Nobody was shouting or screaming or singing along. Now, the hall's interior itself felt like a work of art and especially with the lighting and all but still, I was in awe.

I know a lot of people will say, then just listen to it at home but the feeling of listening to it live is just surreal. Especially the instruments. I just wish that these kind of concerts also existed.

TV/Movies/Fiction I don't care how awful the dub is. I'm not reading subtitles if I don't have to.

I see a lot of jokes and posts online about how the dub is always bad, and listening to the original language with subtitles is better. I couldn't disagree more with the latter statement. Reading subtitles draws my eyes away from the action, and a language I don't know just becomes unnecessary noise. Even if the dub is dreadfully bad, like the Femur Breaker voice actor bad, I will still gladly take it, as I can still enjoy the visuals the show/movie has to offer. The benefit of more authenticate voice acting does nothing for me if I can't understand it directly.

Society/Culture I like to tilt my bum into the toilet bowl before I flush and use the flush cycle like a bidet

I've not heard of anyone else ever doing this. But yes, when I do a bad number 2, I will flush the toilet with my bum cheeks spread and close to the toilet water and then let the toilet do all the work. So far it has resulted in a very hygenic clean.. I have been doing this since I was around 10 years old. I don't see what the difference is between this and a bidet except for perhaps the bidet only targets the anus where as the flush cycle also cleans your outer cheeks.

I know it sounds weird! I think more people do it than they'd like to admit, I also wonder if some just haven't thought to do it yet. Please do let me know if you try it!

But yes I say unpopular because I mentioned this to my neighbour ( we are fairly close don't worry ) and she said it was very dirty of me? I never thought of it like that...

Anyways what do you think?

Technology Reddit and 4chan have both become so shitty that they’re almost unusable.

Using Reddit and 4chan feels like watching new episodes of Family Guy and the Simpsons. Like who the fuck is still here? Who is this for?

I’ve been using both sites on and off for more than ten years now, and each time I came back after taking a break, the quality would be noticeably worse. Reddit used to be its own universe. It’s a husk of what it once was now. Just endless reposts and people asking the same questions over and over again for years. Any interesting sub gets nuked, any cool take gets downvoted to hell. All the comments are either bots, or so generic that they may as well be bots.

Feels like every second post is either a) some weirdo getting absurdly mad over random bullshit and spamming garbage everywhere as a result or b) literal nonsense gobbledygook buzzphrases and memes that can vaguely be reconstructed as a sentence. Just absolute non-sequitor jibberish. The site used to be known as the source of all the world’s memes and now it doesn’t even produce OC.

I’ve always been more of a written text guy than a video guy so I keep coming back to these places hoping to see some kind of revival, but that seems unlikely at this point. I’m too old to go to Discord man.

Society/Culture Cheaters deserve some grace.

1.1k Upvotes

Don't get me wrong . Cheating is definitely wrong and morally despicable. But if there's one thing I understand after working in professions where infidelity is regular ( fitness, club promotion, gigs) is that lust is a significant factor ,when it comes to transgression and monogamy isn't natural for many humans .

One thing that doesn't deserve grace though , is when the cheating partner doesn't come clean to the cheated partner immediately. Because that's just another level of manipulation and gaslighting.

So the act of cheating deserves some grace, but the cheating partner needs to come clean to cheated partner about their act and then they have the power as to what to do about the future of their relationship.

Edit: This is just an opinion. i've never cheated in the past .

Expert Analysis As a black woman, I cannot befriend a black woman who wears straight/wavy wigs or uses striaght/wavy extensions

It's ridiculous that this is normalised. After everything that white people have done to us - slavery, colonisation, Jim Crow, systematic racism, someone wants to emulate that???

A lot of women say that it protects their hair but it really doesn't. Almost every black woman is pretty much better off using her real hair. For every hairstyle that involves extensions, there is a safer protective one that can be done without extensions. For example, wigs do not protect the hair as much as the cornrows underneath without the wig because wigs can ruin edges. The cornrows can be worn without the wig. "French curl box braids" can be replaced with natural hair mini-braids - Mini-braids don't pull on the strands as much as box braids.

If she has cancer or something she could literally wear a scarf - let alone an afro wig. We have a huge scarf culture so why not just take advantage of that?

Also a lot of women just say they like to switch it up... what does that even mean? Imagine a Jew suddenly dons a Hitler moustache and he says he wears it because he likes to switch things up.... It's a similar thing. And for a lot of women that switching up never involves their real hair or mimicking their own texture.

Black women are raised pretty much being told that their hair is ugly - especially those who are unambiguous. That they must hide their hair. By wearing a loose textured wig, they are agreeing with that notion. Imagine if someone calls you and your family ugly and worthless and you smile, nod and agree. That is literally what wearing a wig is in this instance.

Imagine you're a Nigerian woman hanging out with an Indian woman and both of you have Indian hair. Isn't that so embarrassing?

Imagine a black man wearing a straight wig. One with a hairstyle that men frequently wear. He would look stupid af because it's not his texture. That is how stupid black women look with loose hair. It has just been done so much that it looks normal now.

If an Indian were to be racist towards me and say black women's hair is so ugly that they have to cover their hair with the hair of Indian people - what can I say in response to that? Nothing. I have to sit in shame because a lot of black women actually do that.

By a black woman wearing a wig, she is not only insulting herself, she is insulting her family, and she is insulting me. She is saying that black hair is not good enough to be worn out - that she hates black hair so much she would rather cover it with the hair of a people who discriminate against her.

And funnily enough this isn't something that is easy to convince black women of. They will call me a hater, that I'm judging them, that I'm stuck up because they don't want to admit that maybe they have internalised anti-blackness. So I would rather just not be friends with women that I see participating in this behaviour.

The only valid reason to wear loose hair is to avoid discrimination in the work place. And I can't be bothered to sit and interview every potential friend about whether they do it for work or not.

Edit: Every comment disagrees with me so why not upvote my post. You guys are breaking the rules by not upvoting my post.

TV/Movies/Fiction Telling people to only watch Season 1 of Westworld is ridiculous

I genuinely don’t understand the “just watch Season 1 and stop” advice for Westworld. Season 1 is obviously the strongest season, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the show is worthless or that Season 1 somehow functions as the complete story.

A huge part of what makes Westworld interesting is seeing the consequences of everything that happens in Season 1. The first season sets up a ton of questions about consciousness, free will, identity, the hosts, and the nature of the park. Seasons 2–4 actually explore those ideas from completely different perspectives and expand the world far beyond what Season 1 establishes.

And sure, the show gets more complicated, less consistent, and arguably less satisfying as it goes on. That’s a perfectly reasonable criticism. But “it isn’t as good as Season 1” and “you should pretend the rest of the show doesn’t exist” are two completely different arguments.

If someone enjoys Season 1, why would you actively tell them NOT to continue? Let them experience the highs and lows for themselves. Worst case, they eventually decide they don’t like where the story goes and stop watching. At least they made that decision themselves.

Society/Culture Bus drivers have a harder job than airline pilots

Bus drivers, specifically full time drivers for city buses(as opposed to private companies or part time school bus drivers), have a harder job than airline pilots.

-they have to deal with the public directly while pilots get to hide in the cockpit and be supported by the crew

-while pilots may need more technical knowledge, flying a plane is mostly autopilot, literally.

-Bus drivers have to make sure people pay the fair

-Bus drivers do not receive the respect/social acclaim that pilots receive for having their jobs

Society/Culture I think today's “modern” apartment buildings are going to age badly, and future generations will see them as dated and want nothing to do with them

I live in a booming city, and I've started noticing something... The new 4–6 story apartment buildings all look really good individually. Clean lines, lots of windows, nice materials, modern colors, little retail spaces on the bottom, etc.

But then you see another one, and another, and another. Eventually you realize that you're not looking at a collection of buildings anymore. You're looking at the same building repeated over and over again.

It's not just apartments either. New warehouses and commercial developments seem to have the same problem. And I don't think this is unique to my city.

Cleveland shouldn't look like Philly shouldn't look like Atlanta shouldn't look like Utah.

A little uniformity is fine. I understand why developers do it. There are economic incentives, proven designs, construction costs, zoning, etc. And clearly people like this aesthetic.

It gives you that clean, modern, vaguely urban feeling... a sort of “fake downtown” that gives you the feeling of being in a city while still being new, clean and safe.

But I wonder if we're going to look back on this in 30 or 40 years the way we look at certain 1950s and 60s architecture today. Not necessarily because the buildings were inherently ugly. Some of them were actually pretty nice.

It's the oversaturation that makes them look dated. Once an entire generation of buildings shares the same visual language, that visual language becomes a timestamp.

Imagine traveling somewhere in the future for an adventure and realizing that the new parts of the city look exactly like the new parts of the city you just left. We travel for adventure and to see something that we've never experienced before.

I don't think every building needs to be unique or covered in ornate decoration. I just think individual places should look like individual places.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I have a feeling that today's “modern” apartment aesthetic is going to scream 2020s/2030s to future generations in the same way certain older styles scream “1960s” to us now.

Young people in the future are going to want nothing to do with living in places like these.

Health/Safety Does anyone ekse draw a strong line between body odour and no shower odour?

I am not offended by 'no deoderant' BO.
But 'no shower' BO is different.

It should have a different name because I really draw the line between the two.

I play it safe and shower, keep armpits waxed, and de oderant and cologne every day, twice a day.

Discussion Thread I think cheating isn’t so bad if your partner doesn’t know

First of all. I agree that cheating is bad. It involves guilt and hurts your partner. But is it so bad if your partner doesn’t find out? In the words of Anaïs Nin: “I bring home to Hugo a whole woman, freed of all "possessed" fevers, cured of the poison of restlessness and curiosity which used to threaten our marriage, cured through action. Our love lives, because I live. I sustain and feed it. I am loyal to it, in my own way, which cannot be his way.” In a way you love your partner more.
