No one is going to admit this, but I genuinely think the reason most people hate Chaol is because they can’t stand when a male love interest has his own autonomy. Hear me out before I get downvoted.

If you look at the reactions to Chaol in this sub, and then look at the reactions to male love interests in general, you start to notice a pattern, fans seem to hate it when the love interest isn’t blindly obsessed with the female lead. They basically want them to be lapdogs. A lot of people self-insert when they read, so their criticism of a character quickly turns into “I dislike this character because I wouldn’t want someone treating me this way or I would never stand for that.”

They want every male love interest to be perfect, have no flaws, and have no real agency outside of the female lead. They want someone who will blindly agree with the FL and support everything she does. And if you actually look at the series, almost every male character who had an emotional connection with Aelin was, to some extent, completely enamored with her. Aedion, Dorian, Rowan, Fenrys. Chaol was one of the few who actually challenged her, disagreed with her, and had his own perspective, which I think the series more interesting.

For so long, people have complained about female characters being written as revolving around or being centered on their love interests. But for some reason, people seem to love that dynamic when it’s a guy doing it. When a male character’s entire personality becomes protecting, worshipping, or being obsessed with the female protagonist, it’s romanticized. But when a male character actually has his own opinions and refuses to blindly validate her, suddenly he’s “the worst.”

In fact I actually found Chaol treatment towards Aelin entertaining. Did I find him annoying? Obviously. Was he wrong? Yea. But from a writing perspective, I found it way more entertaining to watch two characters genuinely clash than to read hundreds of pages of Rowan standing there snarling at anyone who looked at Aelin while they communicate through that weird mind-link thing. At least reading Chaol pov was interesting, every thought or word that came from Rowan was just Aelin, Aelin Aelin. Extremely boring and repetitive.

I could obviously be completely wrong, and maybe I’m just biased, so feel free to disagree. But I do think there’s an interesting double standard in how people respond to male and female characters in these relationships.

My boyfriend is currently reading Heir of Fire and presented me with an interesting question.

Can Fae have offspring in their animal form? If a Fae is pregnant and shifts, is their animal form also pregnant? But if so, how does the fae they’re carrying who doesn’t shift into the same animal do so?
Another question in this sphere: Can Faes in their animal form communicate with their ”real” counterparts? Would it be accepted for a fae in their animal form to relationships with them? That’s a whole new buckets of worms…

I found it interesting i’ve read the books 3 times over and had never pondered this, and can’t remember it being answered.

finished Tog late last night and i just knew i had to jump right into the second book

Like everyone else (I supposed) I get all kinds of notifications about posts, commments etc- especially if I posted something I often click and read. I had been very upset about the end of EoS and posted for general mental health support! I got notifications about comments/support etc. Now I am mid-ToD and I clicked on something that may have been someone's feelings about KoA (not up to that yet) or idk what- and others commmented. I have no idea really what they are talking about but my imagination is on full alert and I am literally pre-upset about Aelin- having no idea what will happen to her (as I am mid-ToD reading about Chaol and Yrene). I THOROUGHLY REGRET not looking to see what I was reading. I am crazy enough to be getting stomach ache's imagining the worst. No spoilers in commments- I need a TOG series hug.

Just got to the part where Aelin, Rowan, and the others are all on the boat in the cave and jesus christ. This angel has been fucking used and abused and it hurts to witness. In the last few books Aelin had been starting to get on my nerves but this torture she went through has genuinely made me 180 and want to kill everyone who has harmed her. Just absolutely gut wrenching, i want her to be happy so bad.
I’ve gone through psychosis before and not being able to trust your reality or those around you is so scary, mixed with the intense torture she went through….the ‘new skin’ thing really put into perspective what she went through, my god

Partner started reading TAB today and when telling me about it, mentioned ‘they’ were beefing and (since I’m currently reading QoS and have that book open in front of me) I said ‘who’s beefing? Sam and Aelin ?’

Thankfully they didn’t overthink it and said no, Sam and Celaena and I was like oh whoops I was just reading from my book and misspoke! I need to be more vigilant!!

Thankfully they read slowly and will (hopefully) definitely have forgotten about it by the time it becomes important.

I am in the last chapters of Empire of Storms where Aelin and Manon go through the mirror. I am assuming they are seeing what happened in the past with Elena and the new lock now has to be forged with Mala's bloodline's life force (being Aelin?). The place that Erawan has to be locked back into is described by Elena's mother as "beings of a higher, different existence. For whom time was fluid and bodies were things to be shifted and molded. Who could exist in multiple places..." Is there a connection to this place and the place Amren comes from? There's more to the description but it reminds me of the creature Amren changes into when she fights in ACOWAR. Also- the name Elena and Elain beig a seer. A connection? And that Azriel has a "truth teller" sword and I am reading in EoS about Gavin touching the Sword of Truth. Is he referring to Damaris being the Sword of Truth and maybe connected to Azriel's sword? Tht maybe Elain and Azriel have an overlapping story with Aelin. Am I just spinning my wheels here? I don't care if your answers contain spoilers for the rest of EoS as I am alomost done with this book (just no spoilers for the last 2 books of the series please).

I am 1/2-way through EoS- first read. I had finished ACOTAR (2- almost 3 full reads). Should I speed this up and finish the books I have left before the next ACOTAR? I have not yet read CC. Will it make a difference? I can read and absorb much faster than I am- I'm sort of reading slowly to get a good grasp on the politics and royalty relationships. I can for sure finish this and CC by October if I tried.

So I think It's pretty clear that Sjm got inspired by GoT for Throne of Glass, espceially aelin's character. Don't get me wrong. Dany and Aelin doesn't have a similar personality. It's just their family background, their destiny etc. I see a lot of hate on tiktok and from the GoT fandom. But I think it's ridiculous. It is pretty normal to get inspired by other books or stories in general. I mean this is the fantasy genre!

Star Wars × Dune, LOTR × religion/mythology (ofc LOTR is the OG), GoT × the iron king/Lotr/history etc.

People act like ToG is a complete rip off of Game of Thrones. Wtf no😭

And then there's the acotar fandom. More people are complaining about the fact that sjm copied things from the black jewels series. I have read 50 pages from the first book but couldn't get through it.

I hate it when people claiming plagiatism. Just let me enjoy reading🫩. I think many authors don't get that much hate in this aspect such as Sjm. I love ree rising but you can clearly say the first one is inspired by HG. Nobody hates Pierce Brown for that as much as they hate Sjm🥲.

From what I remember Aelin got her golden armor from Anielle. Lying forgotten in a castle. Was that supposed to be Elena’s armor?

First of all, this is not a Dorian vs. Chaol post. I love them both. I just believe that Dorian deserves to be criticized more because, up until Empire of Storms, he has more great quotes than actual impact on the story.

Dorian is incredibly smart, charismatic, compassionate and has amazing dynamics with the other characters but the fandom praises him for things they would heavily criticize Chaol for.

In the first 3 books Dorian is quite self-centered. He had a brief fling with Celaena, and when he later saw her with Chaol, he was jealous and even happy when they broke up, while Chaol tried to avoid getting involved with her with every fiber of his being.

At the end of the first book, Dorian didn’t really do anything to help Celaena during her fight with Cain. He basically just stood there watching. Meanwhile, Chaol went out of his way to encourage her and help her, even though he was also the King’s Captain and was putting himself at risk.

Throughout CoM Chaol is constantly helping Celaena, while Dorian spends most of the book thinking about the fact that she doesn’t want him anymore. And when Dorian sees them dancing and exchanging looks and gets jealous, it’s considered cute. But when Chaol thinks about Aelin in ToD, suddenly he’s a whiny man who can’t move on, even though the romantic relationship between Chaol and Celaena was much more serious and impactful than what Dorian and Celaena had.

Then, throughout HoF Dorian focuses solely on discovering and controlling his powers with Sorscha and explicitly says that he doesn’t want anything to do with the rebellion. Meanwhile, Chaol works with Aedion while still trying to look out for Dorian’s interests at the same time.

It’s only toward the end of QoS and after that Dorian really “wakes up” and starts taking action. And I absolutely love his character development from that point onward. But before that, he is quite immature.

People love it when he says "you cannot pick and choose which parts of her to love" but he doesn’t really do much in that particular moment he just says a beautiful line. Meanwhile, Chaol says a lot of stupid things and acts like an asshole sometimes, but he consistently chooses to do the difficult thing and is willing to sacrifice himself every time.

I love them both, and especially their relationship and dynamic, which is one of my favorite things about the series. That’s why it genuinely bothers me that Chaol gets so much hate and criticism, while Dorian gets almost none, despite being a little whiny and immature for a good portion of the series.

I'm bored so I thought I'll share my experience from the first time reading the series over 4yrs ago now. I apsolutaly loved tog from the first page, thought it was a great book, so I went to my library to get the second book, but it wasn't there. So what did i do?

.... I fucking skipped it! I started Heir of fire, and 13yr old me was just reading all this crazy shit like, oh okay ye sure no Nehemiah, ummm since when was Celeana fae, and Aelin? Like there is no skipping books in this series, but crown of midnight might honestly be the very worst one to skip, and I just just rolled with it dude. I probably read COM after HOF, and I have zero idea when I read AB. Also got the 13's deaths spoiled for me too. And somhow through all of that it still became one of my most loved series that has impacted my life hugely. So after many rereads of the series, it's safe to say that I have everything in order now, and that I had terrible reading etiquitte when I was younger lol.
