Would it be a good idea if I made units based on shepards? Peasant levies that were shepherds? I'm looking for opinions.

New player first list.

Hi, im a returning player to the old world (used to play fantasy). Im looking to pick up old world mainly as a casual hobby game and for painting. Ive picked up the big TK box and am decinding on a first list for Battlemarch (600pts) which is what my local commuinty is playing rn.

Ive put together a list and just wanted to ask whether it looks playable in general. For now i dont want to buy anything else and jsut paint and play with the contents of the box (because otherwise I probably wont paint everything). List is as follows any pointers are welcome :)

++ Characters [254 pts] ++

Tomb Prince [164 pts]

(Great weapon, Light armour, General, Skeleton Chariot, Warding Splint)

Mortuary Priest [90 pts]

(Hand weapon, Wizard [Level 1 Wizard], The Hierophant, On foot, Ruby Ring of Ruin, Illusion)

++ Core Units [344 pts] ++

2 Skeleton Chariots [109 pts]

(Hand weapons, Cavalry spears, Warbows, 4+, Master Charioteer (champion), Standard bearer [Banner of Renown])

13 Skeleton Archers [70 pts]

(Hand weapons, Warbows, Master of Arrows (champion))

20 Skeleton Warriors [115 pts]

(Hand weapons, Light armour, Shields, Master of Arms (champion), Standard bearer, Musician)

10 Skeleton Skirmishers [50 pts]

(Hand weapons, Warbows)

How to beat Demigryphs

In lower point games (1250, 1500) we arent able to field a dragon with matched play rules.

So what do play against them? With a 2+ safe and counter charge, a unit of four Demigryphs wracks havoc against anything we have.

Scorpions get killed before they attack. Necrosphinx will die.
Chariots, Necropolis knights… anything will get hammered before it can attack due to counter charge and the higher intiative.

Infantry doesn’t get counter charged but will probably not charge either. Skeleton warriors lose 7-9 models each round.
Tomb Guard 1-2 less…

I really struggle to find anything in our entire army that can take them on. Combat with multiple units is usually a bad idea due to crumble.

Any experiences you had?

Painted Unit total: 3

Hello all! Thanks for all your positive feedback so far. It’s been really fun to add to the Nehekharan Royal Host! I’ve finished my third unit from the Tomb Kings Starter Set, the skeletal horsemen! Honestly these guys didn’t fare very well in my first ever Battle March game (will share the battle recap later if requested!) but I still think they turned out well. For the Glory of Settra!

First ever game of TOW tonight

Hello all, played my first ever game of Old World tonight - I like to think helped by my experience of historical regimental game systems.

Here was my 1,500pts list:

85 - Mortuary Priest, Wizard Level 2, Necromancy

55 - Mortuary Priest, Wizard Level 1, Necromancy

195 - Tomb King, Shield, General, Flail, Crown of Kings

130 - Tomb Prince, Shield, Skeleton Chariot, Additional Hand Weapon

105 - 20 Skeleton Archers, Master of Arrows

141 - 3 Skeleton Chariots, Master Charioteer, Standard Bearer, Musician

207 - 32 Skeleton Warriors, Light Armour, Thrusting Spear, Master of Arms, Standard Bearer, Musician

159 - 24 Skeleton Warriors, Light Armour, Thrusting Spear, Master of Arms, Standard Bearer, Musician

238 - 20 Tomb Guard, Tomb Captain, Standard Bearer, Musician, Drilled

183 - 3 Necropolis Knights, Necropolis Captain, Standard Bearer, Musician

I was playing against a friend with Warriors of Chaos, and had a really strong start.

The Necropolis knights got charged by 20 marauders in the front and 5 marauder horsemen in the side, and still won the combat. Both units failed to rally the next turn too.

The chariots and Prince managed to set up an unexpected flank charge, evaporating another marauder horseman unit and over running into 10 warriors engaged with my skeletons, leaving only two alive who also fled.

The third and final marauder horseman unit arrived from ambushers in my rear, but over the next 2 turns, my 20 archers were able to slay them all through some shooting and two rounds of combat, only losing one archer (who was resurrected twice).

Unfortunately things started unravelling when the Exalted Champion on Manticore finally got into combat. He almost singlehandedly chomped his was through the rampaging Necropolis knights and then the tomb guard, causing the King to crumble. 4 chosen knights and a sorcerer wiped out my chariots, but then spent the rest of the game manoeuvring against or engaged with my larger block of skeletons. Both priests had Unqiet Spirits which managed to kill two of the chosen knights which was huge, and eventually the skeleton warriors brought down the last of them.

For most of the game I had the upper hand, and at some points felt like I was outright trouncing my opponent. However, in the end I was beaten on points - three Chaos units were left with only either one or two models in, and I just couldn't finish them off.

However, as the first game of a new system for us, it has the marks of being a great ruleset, considering I lost but has a great game and really good fun.

Key takeaways for me:

- I've seen people saying online before about how Necropolis Knights aren't very good. They were excellent for me and reliable at putting damage out, only eventually being defeated when fighting the enemy general and a flank charge at the same time again.

-Archers were decent at killing chaos warriors one or two at a time, I just need to get used to deployment/movement more so that I don't mask my own shooting.

-Flails are Fails

-My most effective units were the normal skeleton warrior blocks. The 24-man unit didn't even get into combat but was useful as a positioning and threatening unit. The 32-man unit just kept tanking everything and getting back up.

-Anything more than casting value 8+ is almost redundant on a Lvl 1-2 wizard.

-Tomb Guard and their -1 AP and cleaving blow are great, but not if you completely whiff your To Wound rolls every time, and send them at a target where the 6s for Cleaving Blow don't affect them.

-Chariots are cool and seem decent with a cheap character in, but need close support to not immediately die after first combat; definition of a glass cannon. Or else I just need to accept that's their use and just take the loss, and either keep the character cheap, or not include one.

-Necropolis Knights are awesome. When I was a kid and they were released and I didn't even play WFB, I always wanted some. Years later I've got my own and I'm so glad they weren't pathetic. I have another 3 to build so I look forward to a bigger unit.

Questions/requests for advice for anyone who's made it this far:

-Halberds or standard khopesh on Tomb Guard?

-Should the next 3 Necropolis Knights make a second unit of three, or increase the existing unit to six?

I suppose there's always an option to make them four and two, due to minimum unit size.

-Best weapon for a Tomb King on foot? When we get to bigger games he'll be on the dragon, I just wanted to use the flail chap tonight as he's the only character I've finished painting. I won't be making that mistake again though! He'll be a Tomb Prince from now on! I have all the other tomb king models so can WYSIWYG a range of weapon options/magic weapons too I suppose.

Thanks fellow Pharaohs for your advice. Absolutely buzzing for more old world/TK

The 2 chariot crews are currently on the painting bench along with another chunky block of skeletons. Debating on changing all the movement tray rims to match the archers

Discussion What's your feelings on bow ushabti having played with the change?

So I'm relatively new to both the game and tk and when I was building my army a consistent bit of advice was "take ushabti with bows, they're still great" so my list has a unit of 5. Every single game goes the same, I get them a really good line of sight on something valuable, they then spend 2 or 3 turns missing every shot before being charged by a monster and folding. For 250 points they take up a lot of space in my deployment zone and have never even approached making back their points, they at best get one shot through on a monster or kill like 2 heavy cavalry.

I'd love to know if I'm using them wrong because they're my biggest frustration with the army

New player question!

Hey everyone, just starting a TK army now and have never played TOW or regimentals before. My friend group all is playing very casual, more for story telling than anything.

I'm currently building my army off a list I made with no idea on rules. Currently I don't have banners or musicians in most of my units but I'm trying to decide if I would be better to just go ahead and put a musician, champion, banner model in each unit and run them as a base troop when I'm not using them?

Tomb Kings Barded Skeletal Steed

Both barded and regular skeletal steeds count as heavy cavalry. Why do the TK and priest even get this option for this mount? Would it be too strong to have a wizard join a unit of horse archers? Roaming mobile TK hammer? Mobile wizard? I just don't see the point. Don't get me wrong, the models are great and I'd love to use them in a list but I just don't see the utility.

Rules Skeleton cohort "chess order"

Hello everyone.

I had a resent game against Tomb Kings, during which my opponent insisted that he only has to fulfil the very first rank of the unit with spearmen, while all the remaining ranks may consist both spearmen and bowmen equally, to maximise the impact of Volley Fire rule.

As for me, the rules are clear - you fulfil as many forward ranks with spearmen as possible, and only then you deploy bowmen.

Who's right?

Discussion Royal Host (Settra) List

Hi All,

I’m a long time Vampire Count player coming over to Tomb Kings (finally). I’ve wanted to make the jump since Old World launched (purchased the arcane journal on release) but always got overwhelmed by the options and put it off.

I’ve decided to finally follow through on this and have spent the best part of the past few days trying to assemble a thematic (but not unplayable!) Settra led Royal Host list (2000). I’ve tried to find examples online but have only found stuff from before the release of ‘War of Settra’s fury’ and the 1.5 FAQ updates.

If anyone is able to help with this that would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure I have something fun to play before I invest in models and don’t trust my own ability to get it right. Thanks in advance for your time.
