T&F General Discussion Femke Broeders-Bol Became A 1:54 800m Runner - interview with Femke's coach Laurent Meuwly

At around the 12-minute mark, he discusses Femke's training paces, and states that 4:20/km as revealed in a post-race interview is her LT2 pace.

Her dropping a 1:%4 high when her LT2 pace is nothing short of a miracle. I'm slightly scared of what her ultimate 800 ceiling is once she's had another winter of aerobic development.

South Africa's emergence as a sprinting superpower and south Asia's dominance of the javelin seemed sort of inevitable in retrospect. What are the other sleeping giants in track and field?

Anyone who's ever watched South African rugby is probably not surprised in the least that the country has emerged as one of the world's leading sprinting powers. Likewise, anyone who's ever watched cricket is not likely taken aback that there are guys in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka who can throw object really far.

This is one of my favorite races ever.

The women’s 400m final at Doha 2019 world champs. Shaunae miller vs Naser. Shaunae arrived there as the fastest woman in the world in the 400m and the 200m and was the favorite. Naser looked like she could challenge her but it was, on paper, Shaunae’s race to lose.
Then the gun went off and Naser went out fast over the first 200m which was strange, it looked like she had misjudged the race but she kept moving away and by the end of the 2nd curve she had a huge lead on Shaunae who tried to come back but couldn’t. Naser won in 48.14! 3rd fastest on the all time list at the time. Shaunae finished in 48.37 and couldn’t believe it wasn’t enough to win.

T&F Throwback 35 years ago today, Mike Powell set his world long jump record of 8.95m at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships. Powell beat Carl Lewis in the greatest long jump competition in history, with Lewis recording a wind-aided 8.91m + 8.87m

How high could a high jumper go if they had to land on their feet?

Pretty self explanatory. Maybe a silly comparison but but I saw a Youtube clip of LeBron James jumping what looked like 1.8m and with only a short runup and I would tend to think even with the rules being different to an ordinary high jump world class high jumpers should still be able to beat him but I don't know by how much besides that it would obviously be considerably less than they can normally jump.

T&F General Discussion Thoughts on a second high-jump event?

I was thinking if they would be any interest in introducing a second (not replacing) high jump event, that would require the athlete to land on both feet first. This would obviously be more similar to how high jump used to be. Different skills would be involved, so it wouldn't just be jumping but also landing. But I wouldn't want to return to the judgment/performance aspect of early high jump, only that the feet has to land first. How you get over the bar is still up to you.

There are so many running events and yet few jumping events, this would give jumpers a bit more variety.

Obviously this is a bad idea and somebody will no doubt tell me why, but I find the idea interesting.

Two World Records Set Five Years Apart on 30th August — Both Still Standing!

Post image
86 Upvotes

The two oldest men’s outdoor world records in athletics were both set on 30th August — five years apart.

Yuriy Sedykh set the men’s hammer world record of 86.74 m at the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart, exactly 40 years ago today.

Then, on 30th August 1991, Mike Powell jumped 8.95 m in the men’s long jump final at the World Championships in Tokyo, breaking Bob Beamon’s legendary record — and that mark still stands 35 years later.

This is just an appreciation post - nothing more.

For those interested the Top 10 longest-standing current outdoor world records in athletics:

  • 26th July 1983 — Jarmila Kratochvílová — Women’s 800 m — 1:53.28 — Munich, West Germany
  • 6th October 1985 — Marita Koch — Women’s 400 m — 47.60 — Canberra, Australia
  • 30th August 1986 — Yuriy Sedykh — Men’s Hammer — 86.74 m — Stuttgart, West Germany
  • 7th June 1987 — Natalya Lisovskaya — Women’s Shot Put — 22.63 m — Moscow, USSR
  • 11th June 1988 — Galina Chistyakova — Women’s Long Jump — 7.52 m — Leningrad, USSR
  • 9th July 1988 — Gabriele Reinsch — Women’s Discus — 76.80 m — Neubrandenburg, East Germany
  • 16th July 1988 — Florence Griffith-Joyner — Women’s 100 m — 10.49 — Indianapolis, USA
  • 24th September 1988 — Jackie Joyner-Kersee — Women’s Heptathlon — 7,291 points — Seoul, South Korea
  • 29th September 1988 — Florence Griffith-Joyner — Women’s 200 m — 21.34 — Seoul, South Korea
  • 30th August 1991 — Mike Powell — Men’s Long Jump — 8.95 m — Tokyo, Japan

T&F Diamond League (2026) Does the Zurich train station pole vault count as indoors or outdoors?

Very cool to watch the women vault in the massive train station, with 3000 fans in the stands. (Even streaming it online the atmosphere was electric.)

The venue has a roof: very high, like an indoor arena/stadium. It has walls on all sides, though fairly open at then ends (where the tracks run).

Does World Athletics call this indoors or outdoors? It seems like there would be implications for indoor/outdoor national records, etc…
