CSX’s Chessie System heritage unit made its first appearance in the Springfield, MO area today. This is the fourth CSX heritage unit I have caught (the other three are 1900, 1836 and 1875) and this one ranks near the top of my list out of the 21; however, it’s also probably the unit that pisses me off the most because it would look phenomenal if the entire locomotive was in the Chessie scheme rather than the cab being in regular CSX colors.

The Pm36-1 steam locomotive (Pablok 1937, "Beautiful Polka") is an aerodynamic express steam locomotive with a 2-3-1 axle arrangement (Pacifik), awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. Its aerodynamic, dark blue steel casing was developed at the Warsaw University of Technology, reducing air resistance by 30-40% and allowing it to reach a design speed of 140 km/h (142 km/h in tests). The streamlined casing covered the wheels and mechanisms to a height of 25 cm above the rail, and access was provided by sliding doors and shutters. The wedge-shaped driver's cabin was integrated into the boiler line, improving visibility. The 1,800 hp engine had a twin superheated steam engine, a boiler with a pressure of 18 atm, a heating area of ​​191 m², and a grate of 4.5 m². The overall length of the unit was 24.75 m, and the driving wheels had an impressive diameter of 2,000 mm (rolling wheels: front 1,000 mm, rear 1,200 mm). The locomotive itself weighed 88.4 t (empty) and 105.8 t in service, and with the type 32D36 tender (holding 32 m³ of water and 9 t of coal), its total weight was 167.3 t.

I hope that kind of question is allowed. This is a 3D render from the game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by Carla Devéze (artstation page), and I was curious whether or not if this is a real train - I looked at French trains from the timeframe of the game (about 1880-1910) but couldn't find any equivalent, though admittedly my knowledge is limited.

And if it's not a real train, what would be the closest existing locomotive? Thanks in advance!

SBB is well known for having driving cabs and/or locomotives halfway a train, as well as mixing single and double decker cars. This train in Olten featured all of above.

Despite living in the US, I am excited by this. I've always wondered if this was possible, regardless of location. I know you have to meet some modern standards, especially if they run on the mainline, but this arrangement is possible in some places. If this is successful, the Keighley and Worth Valley or even the West Somerset could form a partnership like this. I think the Swanage Railway does operate the occasional commuter service, but I'm not sure. Regardless, I am hopeful that this works out.

My new job has me nearby a shunting yard. thankful to appreciate the scale of these things.

We shoved all the locomotives, box cars and the caboose Sunday evening to the NS yard in Spencer. NS picked them up Monday afternoon.

I’m getting more and more fond of historical mixed goods and passengers trains and looking for pictures and documentation about them, from all over the world (both historical and current).

This kind of trains doesn’t exist anymore in my country (France), but were common on small local lines. If I’m’correct, they still exist in Switzerland at least (on Rhb network).

As an example, here you have an A 80 D, built by the French manufacturer Établissements Billard (now defunct), which can often be seen towing small good trailers on the metric CFD lines (pictures here with a RM30 mail car).

So, if you have any knowledge, pictures or stories to share about such trains, I’ll be more than happy to see/read them!

I am working on a road builder / traffic management game called Traffic Architect. New districts keep appearing on the map by themselves - you never place one and you never zone anything - and everything you build is the network that has to reach them and carry what they generate. They fill your roads with cars until the roads choke, and trains are how you take that load back off.

A train carries far more people than a bus does, for less upkeep per seat, so one busy line does what a fleet of buses can't. Every line is set to carry passengers, freight, or both, and that choice turned out to be the most interesting thing in the whole system. Goods stops are slow. People walk on and off while the doors are open; a container has to be craned across, and the train stands there for it.

The catch is what a combined line is worth on paper. Nobody is assigned to a line here - every trip compares riding against driving and picks - and the estimate a rider goes on has to assume the long stop everywhere, because the line might get away with a short one but nobody can count on it. So declaring a line combined costs you commuters before a single crate turns up. The train itself only pays the long dwell where it really does goods work, but the schedule people plan around never knows that in advance. It's the honest price of keeping the option open, and it means a dedicated line beats a hedged one without any rule saying so. Going freight-only pays you back with a longer train, since a boxcar rake doesn't have to fit a platform.

Metro is underground, and it's passenger-only. You can't work goods through a tunnel station, so a line that touches one is locked to passengers until you take that stop out.

Changing trains costs time, and how much depends on the platform rather than on the station. Two lines standing at the same track is a step across, however grand the building around it. Two platforms means an underpass or a bridge. A hybrid station, with surface trains above and metro below, is the slowest, because you're going up or down. That time is priced in before anyone decides to travel, so a slow interchange can lose you a connection that looked fine on the map.

Level crossings included - the barriers close on where the train physically is rather than on a timer, and they only lift once the tail is clear. The part I like is that the car routing counts the expected barrier wait as a cost, so a road over a busy line becomes less attractive and traffic drifts onto the roads that don't cross it.

I do some railfanning vids (very fledgling channel so far, 150 subs). I was curious what kind of thumbnail would garner more clicks. I've got at least 3 vids up now. Two of which feature a NFS engine in the thumbnail and those have done meagerly to say the least. Maybe 50ish or barely 100 views. I did one vid about the Northeast Regional and featured the train in question as the thumbnail. That got over 1000 views. Do people have a preference when they click on vids? Or is it just algorithm crap and a roll of the dice on what works?

Also this video isn't on the channel yet, will be featured in January 2027 as part of a new compilation I'm working on. Crescent rolling through Norcross, GA fyi
