My stance was basically "What do you need guns for? We have other means of self-defense, the police should be able to resolve situations involving guns and finally what is this whole bullshit about defending yourself against tyranny anyway?"

My perspective was shapen by the ideal of peacefully resolving conflict situations, not being very observant of the police and the fact that i am german and guns simply aren't spread far and wide.

What changed my perspective is seeing how uuuuh well and peacefully the cops handle situation with and without guns (especially american cops due to their training but german cops can shoot quite quickly too), the fact that the USA is a country where guns are widely available and in use and the fact that the nuts begging to defend themselves against tyranny are happily imposing tyranny on us queer people. The whole self defense against government idea was initially an excuse for some other historical thing in the US IIRC but now we have fascist orange sitting on top and republicans are happily siding with him no matter how much he keeps lying.

The benefits of any "sensible" gun regulations would be far more effectively and less abusably achieved through just... normal social safety nets and stuff.

The choice to kill comes before the choice of weapon. Anyone dedicated to ending lives will find an implement to do so (knives, acid, nail bombs, motor vehicles, bow and arrows, etc. etc. etc.), so the only truly effective way to stop violence is to actually prevent violence.

Remove or solve the factors driving people to make the choice to kill, and gun violence solves itself.

Well yeah I've been saying for years that gun deaths are largely a problem of men being insane and also gang warfare due to poverty and the resulting drug trade. But things like denying guns to people convicted of domestic violence and having waiting periods are good ideas.

Yeah but those are a part of existing gun regs.

The point is we don't need any more, we need to get rid of most of what we already have and refine the little we keep.

Edit: I stated a fact. I just same-day purchased a firearm for the third* time in my life a couple months ago, and not all domestic violence charges are felonies. Do your research folks. Don't instinctively trust everything you read.

Waiting periods and banning convicted felons for life are Federal law, the States don't get a say in that part.

Huh? Waiting periods aren't federal law, and I was talking about specifically DV offenders, not all felons. This is either bad faith engagement, a misreading of what I said, and/or the accidental spreading of misinformation.

I never said you couldn't have that. I just think it's okay to make someone wait a few days for it. And I don't think people who beat their partners or children should be allowed to own guns.

Who gets to pick who gets to own a gun? California has proven that doesn't work. Their gun regulation is based on Racism. But in today's political environment, would anyone posting in here be allowed to own a gun?
