In an attempt to most accurately recreate the passenger information display systems of the new Berlin subway series J and JK vehicles, this simulator offers to experience the feeling of those monitors right at home. The download is available on GitHub, but for now the Read-Me is in german only, you'll have to translate it, I'm sorry. The simulator itself is also available with english translations, though.

Stoked my city canceled bus lines to pay a private company millions to shuttle people around in vans.

Okay... so there was a post going around about Miami. Now, here's my idea of a super simple, super cheap solution. If you're not familar with the area, open up maps to see how this all fits in. It just seems like massive overkill to try and build a non-stop to the airport. A quick switch in central Miami could be pretty painless. But here's the basic idea:

- About 1.2 miles of double track

- Automated people mover - similar to JFK air train

- As you can see there would be 4 (maybe 5?) stops along the port at the main terminals.

- Then it runs straight to Miami central where you can jump on the:

--- Metromover around downtown/brickell

--- Tri-Rail to elsewhere in South Florida

--- Brightline

--- Metrorail which goes directly to the airport and also to Amtrak

Now, we all know the average cruise passenger is petrified of transit and may not take metrorail from the airport, but a heck of alot will, to say nothing of those arriving via Brightline to Diseney etc. To top it off this could be free for cruise passengers, or probably even paid for by the ships.

I oppose Prop 43, it's plain undemocratic. Sadly, Prop 43 WILL pass. Because this is America, and "no new taxes!" always wins, especially when inflation is high.

Fortunately, even if Prop 43 passes, we can expand the Transportation Development Act to double a 1/4-cent sales tax to 1/2-cents. No statewide vote required; only approval via the Legislature and the Governor! This would benefit transit agencies like San Diego's MTS, which would receive $140M/year in new operating revenues.

In California, under state law, if a sales tax measure is put on the ballot by a state or local government, it requires a 2/3rd supermajority in order to pass. We saw this with Measures M and A in Los Angeles and San Diego respectively in 2016. Los Angeles' measure passed, but Measure A only garnered 58% of the vote in 2016, causing it to fail.

However, if a tax measure is put on the ballot by citizens, then it only requires a simple majority to pass. For example, we saw this with Measure G in San Diego in 2024. That measure just failed to garner a majority.

What this Proposition will do is make it so that ALL tax initiatives on the ballot, even including private citizens' initiatives, will require a 2/3rd supermajority in order to pass. In other words, 34% of the voters can take away the will of what 66% want. This is fundamentally undemocratic, and for transit, it will make it harder for transit tax measures to pass, especially for counties like San Diego and Orange Counties. These counties are significantly more conservative than Los Angeles are, and if this passes, we can kiss any future funding for transit good bye in those counties.

When I'm on the bus at 1am I'm always grateful when the driver turns off all the lights, except at stops, but I can imagine this isn't everyone's preference.

So Google has capitulated to the regime. I’ve been using Google maps for 15 years now for transit directions but I’m looking to delete it now and use Apple Maps and Transit instead. How have those apps worked out for you with transit directions?

I just came back from London and the Transit app did not work there so I had to use Google Maps. I’m going to Japan next year and so many people say Google Maps is the most helpful. For reference I live in Southern California.

I started using Transit last year and it’s worked out well for me, but I prefer Google Maps to look in advance. How is Apple Maps in comparison? Are there any other good alternatives out there?

Has anyone found non google maps that is decent at planning and showing transit routes? I'm interested in the UK in particular, but let share any that you found decent.

Apple maps is pretty good, especially transit layer, but I'm trying to find something that is FOSS ideally or, at least, works on Android.

I really disliked UI of city mapper, Transit app doesn't work outside London, HERE UI and way of displaying transit I found pretty bad as well. I tried Vela, which is supposed to be a different front end for Google, but found transit layer and planning to be much worse. Any other suggestions?
