Looking for advice as suddenly literally one day my puppy broke his leg accidently and now needs amputation on his right rear leg and I want to know what to expect from recovery time and life long after as hes just a puppy and his surgery is a 10am today and we get him back Thursday so everything has happened very suddenly and he's my first puppy and im only 16 so everything's feeling very overwhelming but im also tired as ive stayed awake all night as his legs still broken and hes whining and not happy at all bless him

I’m not sure exactly what I’m looking for here, but I just want to write it out anyway.

The older of my two dogs who just turned 11 has a mass on her back left leg. We have run some tests and done cytology, enough to know it’s a malignant mass but likely has not metastasized. Best guess is soft tissue sarcoma, but the surgeon wants to do a CT and biopsy this Thursday, and has surgery scheduled for next Thursday. There is a chance we can remove the mass, but if it is too irregular, has local spreading, or if it has encompassed the sciatic nerve, they will recommend taking the leg.

She is a mix breed and looks like a shrunken golden retriever, and she is only about 27 lbs. The doctors say that because of her size and otherwise good health that if they need to amputate she should recover really well with a mostly unaffected quality of life. My wife and I are both in the medical field, and I keep thinking about how hard this type of recovery would be for a person, even though they say it’s far easier for dogs. I’m having a really hard time processing it all, and maybe looking for advice or reassurance?

My boy just came home about an hour ago. He had a hind leg amputation. 75 lb GSP/lab. Hes not really putting any weight on the remaining leg and usually poops 3 times a day. I have a couple different slings and harnesses but the incision site is so large I'm nervous about rubbing it.

Aspiration, anyone have experience with Carboplatin and having other dogs? I'm so nervous about getting it on me or him or anything.

So my dog (1.5yr old miniature dachshund) had surgery for luxating patella on the 20th of April and he seemed to heal faster than the care sheet predicted.

He doesn’t limp when walking or full speed running, but he still limps when he’s speed walking/jogging. This is how he always is on hard surfaces, on grass he used to not limp but I’ve noticed when upping the exercise like my vet recommended he’s limping on grass too, or at least light on his surgery leg (not as much as hard ground but it’s still there). Occasionally he will swap the leg he limps on, I think I’ve seen him do this around 8 times for a few seconds each time.

He has seen the vet a couple times since the surgery - 6week after surgery X-rays came back fine and about a month ago the vet felt his knee and said everything was feeling stable.

So I guess my question is, is it normal he’s still limping? Like is this just how he is and I should stop being so worried about it?

Using a sling but the incision is just so large (while leg up to joint plus a softball sized lipoma that was just in front of the leg) so I kind of have to stay in front of his penis and he pees on his legs and the sling.

I need any and all advice… did you get your dog a prosethic leg? A cart? Certain vitamins? Please help I want to make his life normal as possible. I was looking online at prosethic legs for him and have read mixed reviews…
For context he’s a 5 month old puppy the neighbors were drinking and shot him (were pressing charges) but for now I need to get stuff to make this process as easy for him as possible. Please help and please be kind 😭❤️

I’m currently considering adopting a three-legged dog and would really appreciate hearing from people who have actual experience living with a tripod, especially one missing a front leg.

The dog I’m considering is a 5-year-old Border Collie mix who lost one of his front legs (reason unknown, he was found on the streets). From what I’ve been told, he is otherwise healthy, active and happy, and he seems to get around very well. I’m really quite taken with him, but I’m trying to make a responsible, well-informed decision rather than letting my heart make it for me.

The problem is that I’m finding very contradictory information online. Some owners say their tripod dogs basically live completely normal lives and that you hardly notice the missing leg. Others say that with a front-leg amputation, overloading of the remaining limbs is inevitable and that arthritis, joint problems and expensive veterinary bills are more or less guaranteed later in life.

I completely understand that nobody can predict what will happen to one individual dog, and I’m prepared for some additional veterinary care if needed. What I’m trying to understand is what the realistic long-term picture usually looks like.

I’m also particularly interested in exercise capacity. How far can a healthy dog missing a front leg typically walk? Can they still do long hikes — for example 10–15 km or more — if they are properly conditioned? Maybe parts of this hike in a backpack?
And does anyone have experience running with a three-legged dog? I enjoy running myself and would love it if he could occasionally join me, but obviously I wouldn’t want to ask more of him physically than is sensible.

I’d be very interested to hear both the positive and the less positive experiences, particularly from people whose dogs have been tripods for several years. If you were in my position, would the missing front leg make you hesitate to adopt him?

She is doing so amazingly, she is even nicer! They didn’t tell me that bit! Bella had to have a right front leg amputation because of a melanoma on her paw, they removed and tested her lymph nodes and they were all clear. She healed so well and is jumping and scratching carpet. I was guilt ridden doing this to her, but I have no regrets.

I tried the highly recommended flagline, but unfortunately, his torso is too long so the belly strap is too far up his ribcage. I sent pics to ruffwear customer support, and they agrees its a bit too short but the straps on next size up would be too big. He's had this same issue with other harnesses and coats in the past, he's always been hard to fit.

I found a harness that comes in a "long" version, has anyone found this to work with their long tripawds missing a front leg? The buckles look bulky and uncomfortable though, so I'd love to hear any other recommendations :)

Hi everyone, my boy is a little over 2 months post op from a rear amputation due to osteosarcoma. His healing could not have been better. He’s done so well adjusting and had no complications. I noticed a bump forming. It does seem it has grown over the past few weeks. It’s hard when he lies down and soft while standing. As well as when he is laying down it’s hard towards the top and softer at the bottom of the bump. I’ve pushed on and around it while laying and standing and he doesn’t react to it or seem like it’s hurting him. He has his xray appointment within the next few weeks to check his lungs to see if the cancer has spread but he’s breathing perfectly normal and acting normal. Any ideas on what could be happening?

Hey everyone, my 9yr girl Zara ~50lb was recently diagnosed with sarcoma on her hind leg. Was hard to come to the decision but from everything I’ve seen online this seemed like the best option for improving quality of life in what time she has left.

Surgery is about a week out and I am just trying to make sure I am as prepared as possible afterwards. My home has unavoidable stairs which I have been carrying her up and down several times a day for months now. I am realizing that the way I hold her to carry past stairs may be very uncomfortable immediately following the surgery (arm usually somewhere close to hip/pelvis).

I’ve seen mentions of the “help em up”, “ruffwear”, and “onetigris” harnesses being used but hoping I can get a little more insight on peoples experiences with them specifically for stair assistance if possible. Any and all insight is appreciated thank you!

He's my cute Ghosty boy about a month post op from hind leg amputation. He's doing amazing half the time I forget he's even missing a hind leg. Tonight while grooming him I noticed on both his front legs he's losing hair on his elbows. The side that is missing is a leg is very caucused. I'm assuming these are pressure sores but I also wanted to check here for advice. Is there something I should be worried about or should i call his vet? I know we are just a month post op so he's definitely still adjusting to being a tripawd and are probably just pressure sores but I don't want his front legs to become injured either.

My girl started coughing two weeks ago. After being told it was kennel cough or allergies we returned today. Chest xray showed a large mediastinal mass as well as a new heart murmur. Back story is she had an amp done in march for soft tissue sarcoma. She was doing well until the cough. She turned 6 a few weeks ago.
She is coughing pretty regularly and lower in energy but is stable. In home euthanasia has been scheduled for next week. They are available 24/7 if anything changes.
My warrior princess was dealt a shit hand but she knew nothing it but adoration and love. She will be spoiled rotten and snuggled endlessly. We are angry and heart broken but will endure that she doesn’t suffer or experience any pain.

My pup and I are always up to date with the cool new enrichment toys on the market. Our favorites are the Woof Pupsicle and Benebone Tongue twister.

I had seen multiple videos of people finding the pre-made pupsicle treats at a great discount at TJ Maxx. We unfortunately could only find size small while our pupsicle is an XL, but decided to buy the size small anyway since it was such a great deal. I had also seen people online fit two small treats in an XL.

But today I had an epiphany. I decided to try my size small woof treats in our Benebone tongue twister...and it has a HIT. They fit in perfectly! And lasted my pup the same amount if not longer than the og treat pods the benebone calls for.

I figured to share as I know how expensive but necessary enrichment toys and treats can be.

Still pre-op here but trying to get my ducks in a row. I've ordered the rugfwear flagline, but I'm wondering if I should've gotten the webmaster or another harness entirely? Apparently webmaster might be more supportive and comfortable for long wear, but I also read that because the dogs leg has to go through a loop that it would be difficult to put on a right-front let amputee. Anyone have experience with either of these harnesses, or recommend another harness entirely?

I did look at the help em up harness but even with the tripod modifier they sell, reviewers have complained the harness still rotates too much.
