audition Audition piece?

I’m going on my third year of tuba, played baritone before that, and I am auditioning for the Alberta band association wind orchestra. I need to audition early 2027, but will actually be in the band late 2027. I have never auditioned for anything before and have no idea what to play. My range is fine (e1 to b flat 3 with no warm up on a 3 valve, not sure if that’s good or bad), but I struggle with quick tonguing a tiny bit. I’m still not bad, but I don’t want anything insane. Any free sheet music?

gear Any recommendations for mouthpieces?

Joined my high school band class, we are playing instruments soon and I went with the Tuba. We are required to buy our mouthpiece, does anyone know what I should go for? I’m open to the used market if it means something better for me. To be honest, I don’t know much about what is considered good or bad, I was originally going to go for some cheap amazon mouthpiece but my friend argued against it. 😅

Any other information of what i might want / need would be helpful too, thanks!

sheet music Snedecors Low Etudes and excerpt gimmick

Hey all!

Ive been playing some of Snedecor's low etudes lately, and picked up on how some of them mirror orchestral excerpts, like in book one:
17: Stravinskys Firebird
18: Prokofiev V
19: Pines of Rome

And book 2:
18: Fountains of Rome
20: Ride of the Valkyries / Bruckner 7

I'm curious if some of the other ones I've yet to play have a similar gimmick, and if so does anybody else know what those are?

Thanks!

technique how should I work on tightening my lips?

okay, I’m still getting used to the embouchure change because I had my braces removed two months ago, but I’m noticing my lips are too lose when I play high in the staff/above the staff.

Is there any exercises to work on this specifically? ofc I love my boy arbans but i wanna hear what else this sub has to say

Thank you!!

mouthpiece Help

Months ago, a friend was playing this mouthpiece some “UMI 2”, and they got it stuck on a tuba, we’ve been trying to get it out but it’s impossible. And I tried so hard it nearly broke the tuba’s neck (now it has a leak). It’s been that way ever since and we need that mouthpiece back.

How can I fix this? Going to a repair shop is sort of last resort though. (I will try to provide pictures/videos once I get them)

My grandfather in law has this tuba that's over 50 years old, and he wants to sell it, but he has no idea where to start.

It is marked "Amati Kraslice" and appears to have four rotary valves.

Unfortunately it is currently in rough condition. One part of the valve/linkage mechanism appears to be broken, and the mouthpiece is missing (although he thinks he may still have it somewhere).

I'm particularly interested in:

- identifying the exact model/year if possible;

- whether this is considered a decent Amati/Červený instrument;

- whether the damage looks repairable;

- and what it might realistically be worth in its current condition versus after repair.

Located in Poland.

gear Is a 18.5mm/.782 inch bore around standard? also what is a Yorkish tuba?

I play on a 18.5mm most of the time and played on something smaller the other day and it felt very weird/stuffy, and I just say Yorkish as an adjective to describe some models online and was wondering,

mouthpiece Choosing a Mouthpiece.

Hi, I’m in marching band, and I currently have a beat up Helleberg mouthpiece that I’ve had for years since I started playing tuba (and has developed a weird triangular shape at the end from dents), so I want to get a new mouthpiece.

I’ve been looking into perantucci mouthpieces to try and get that “crank” sound from the sousaphone while keeping a good range, i can make a “sort of” sound like that on my current mouthpiece but it’s not good at all. Because of its current state and the way it’s generally built, getting that aggressive HBCU band sound is very difficult on it, if not basically impossible.

Recently I’ve been looking into a mouthpiece like the Schilke 69c4 and I’m staying between a reasonable price range, I want something that’ll last and make a good sound, and so I’ve wanted to get opinions or suggestions from fellow sousa players to pick a mouthpiece for this kind of work that I want.

Thanks!

mouthpiece Tuba Mouthpiece differences

My daughter is going to be playing a baby tuba. The only information we’ve been given is that I need to call the local music store and buy a Helleberg 120S for $105.

I’m happy to do it, but money is a little tight at the moment. So I’m wondering if there is an actual difference between that and the off brand Missmore 120S on Amazon for $25.

I don’t want to be cheap, but I don’t want to spend 2-4x more on something because it’s easier to just standardize things across 100s of students to something a store has in stock.

mouthpiece Picking my first mouthpiece

I'm planning to buy my first mouthpiece but I'm unsure what to get. I plan to buy a mouthpiece which I have used before back in my secondary school which was the Perantucci PT-50 and PT-88. But from what I recall, I felt no difference when using these mouthpieces, even for my range and everything. Can anyone give me some sort of comparison or recommendation on which one should I get?

mouthpiece Trombone mouthpiece size for a tuba player

Fellow Tuba players,

Longtime tubist here. I recently picked up a cheap used Yamaha trombone with the intent of getting to a point where I am good enough to play last chair in my local community jazz band. I would maybe like to play bass trombone eventually, but I am not ready to spend bass trombone money if I do not like playing trombone.

So, my question is, what is a good starter mouthpiece for a tuba player who is playing trombone? The only trombone mouthpiece I have is a Bach 11c, which I have never used and have no clue where I got it. Is it good for beginners? or would something else be better for a person who has exclusively played tuba for about 20 years? I used to play euph, too, but I got rid of my euphonium and mouthpieces a long time ago.

gear Need an advice

Hello everyone,

After 10 years my orchestra can finally afford to buy me a new tuba, and I’ve been asked to look into some possible options.

The problem is, that I honestly have very little knowledge about what’s worth buying, where to look, or what makes sense for the money.

For some context, I’ve been playing an old Amati F tuba up until now. My conductor, however, is insisting that I switch to a Bb tuba. I know roughly how to play a Bb, but after so many years of playing F, I’m having a hard time making the switch.

I’m from Poland, so ideally the instrument would need to be purchased somewhere in a neighboring country. My budget is around 20,000–30,000 PLN (roughly €4,650–7,000).

I’ve heard that Thomann and Cerveny make some decent tubas. Does anyone have any recommendations? And, more importantly, do you think it’s actually worth switching from F to Bb after so many years of playing F?

I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

sheet music Big Band Charts

Hey y'all,

I am trying to purchase two charts.

  1. Donna Lee arr. Michael Philip Mossman - I tried reaching out to Dr. Mossman but to no avail, I would love to if someone either had a direct contact with him and could put me in touch or if they knew where they could purchase this particular chart. Mattis Cederberg famously did this with the WDR Big Band on cimbasso!

  2. Struttin With Some BBQ arr. Gil Evans - I'm going to reach out to the Gil Evans estate but if anyone knows a place to purchase this chart, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!
