New Rule: Selling

Hello,

Adding a new rule to the subreddit about selling. We haven't had many issues here, but scamming is becoming more and more of an issue on reddit in general so we're doing a preemptive strike. Euphoniums and related gear are expensive and a scam could cost you a lot.

If you list something for sale on this subreddit, your post must include a clear image of the item(s) you're selling, a paper note in the image showing your Reddit username + the date, and the price clearly stated (or an ask for a best offer). If you are linking to an external website (your eBay listing, for example), just prove somehow that it is your listing (an image as described above that is clearly the same item, for example).

We'll be removing posts that don't follow this rule starting now. Sharing deals doesn't relate to this rule (look at this cheap Yamaha from Japan, for example), but if it is found that you are sharing your own deal, you risk being banned from the subreddit.

Please be weary of scammers. The mod team is not responsible if you fall for a scam.

Advice on lip slurs

Hi!

My lip slurs have been... lacking, and I'm unsure how to practice them properly. I find it hard to practice something without knowing what to focus on while practicing them (for example, when you do long tones and have to concentrate on consistency in airflow, tone and tuning). What do y'all think about while practicing your lip slurs? Many thanks.

Edit - also doing lip slurs to help with range, so let me know if there's anything else I should be thinking about while doing that.

Question about valve caps

Am wondering where could I buy valve caps / finger buttons for my 3+1 comping Euph, I really want the ones that are like thin and light so I can reduce the weight on the valves. My eupho is a Schiller elite which is modeled after the Yamaha YEP-642 and but also has some DNA of the Besson 967 but is mostly based off the Yamaha

The best tuning slide grease.

La Tromba slide and cork grease made it so my second valve slide could actually move freely.

On my E1, the second slide came with slight alignment issues, making it extremely difficult to pull out, with me having to loop a cloth through the ring of the slide and apply immense force. This was until i managed to get another container of La Tromba slide grease. Up until then, I had been using and trying all the slide greases I had at my disposal, so Yamaha, Bach, J Meinlschmidt, etc... . None of them had any effect as drastic as this one. I heavily recommend it to everyone. It's good, it's cheap and it smells great (seriously). it also tastes good.

I made an audition simulator for an certain euphonium

I made a blind audition simulator for a certain music anime called Sound! euphonium , and I’d like to see how musicians who aren’t familiar with the characters would judge the performances from a neutral perspective.

For the euphonium audition, the trumpet player is the same in both recordings, so I’d especially like to hear which euphonium you think sounds better together with the trumpet.

For the trumpet audition, I’m simply interested in which performance you prefer.

The order of the players is shuffled every time you refresh the page, so the order from the anime won’t influence your choice.

It can be accessed here:

Any bugs or suggestions for improvement are welcome!

Marching band lyre

For some reason I can’t ever seem to find a lyre to fit my Yamaha marching baritone. The regular 90° ones just don’t sit well in the screw. Any recommendations?

Advice on stripping lacquer

Hello, I'm a trumpet player waiting to learn a new instrument and through that eupho would be a good and found a cheap yep 321, a brass tech said that this was vintage horn and fine to learn on but wouldn't sink money into cause it's old.

I like the horn and needed a little love but I can't lie I hate the chipping lacquer. I know I can remove old horns lacquer with hot water, but is there any harm to myself if I were to do this?

suggestions for mouthpieces when all I do is double on multiple brass instruments

So clarification for the title, I play euphonium, but not as a primary instrument; I am primarily a French horn player, but I spend a great amount of time also playing trombone and euphonium, depending on the type of ensemble I’m in and the instrumentation needed.

A brief bit abt my experience is that I am actually in undergrad for music education and French horn performance, but I have picked up trombone a few years ago for jazz band and then I learned euphonium in my brass methods class this year, and took off with it rather quickly, and decided to double more on euphonium lately. I still regularly play horn and I have figured out my own needs in adjusting technique between the different brass instruments I play, but I’m also just curious about getting some of my own gear for euphonium.

Currently I am in marching band at a university where I play marching baritone, which I am loaning from the school, which comes with an older King mouthpiece that I can’t remember the number, but I think it said something like a 5C or something? It doesn’t feel as small as a Bach 6 1/2 AL, but not significantly bigger. There is significant wear on this mouthpiece on the rim and I also was curious about trying out deeper cups for better projection and clarity in my lower range while on the field. I also have been wanting to just get my own large bore euphonium/trombone mouthpiece for the times I have to borrow a large bore trombone or euphonium, since all I have in regards to what I own in low brass gear is a small bore tenor trombone and a small shank Dennis Wick 7CS for my jazz setup that I’m fine with.

I was eyeballing something like a Bach 5G for euphonium, as I tried a Bach 6 1/2 AL both on trombone and euph but it doesn’t feel deep enough for some of my lower range needs for it to be designated as a solid all-around pick for me. As far as my tendencies on euph vs. horn, I am completely ok with projecting and having smooth tone in my upper range on euph, since I’m so used to the small mouthpiece of a French horn. I can play low on euph, but it’s not very loud and I tend to have some minor issues in tone and intonation as I am still navigating the feel of centering my air in a larger mouthpiece (it’s getting better tho fs).

For any French horn players who play euph as well and want to know my preferred setup on horn, I currently use a Houghton Horns H1 cup with a 18mm Houser E Series rim, but I also enjoy my Laskey 80G mouthpiece as well. Generally I don’t like anything that is less than 18mm in diameter for the rim. Do what you please with this info lol. Lastly, I was curious abt Laskey’s line of euph mouthpieces, including their baritone stadium series mouthpiece if any of yall tried it, I just have good experiences with laskey mouthpieces on horn, so I wonder how they do with the other brass instruments compared to other brands like Bach or Schilke.

TL;DR: I am a horn player who doubles on euph and trombone, currently looking for a large bore mouthpiece that will help with low range projection, preferably something that would work well for marching baritone as well (the baritone is large bore)

Edit: the mouthpiece that came with the marching baritone I’m lended is a large shank King Marcellus (no other engravings on the mouthpiece, based on my assumptions with a public university’s band budget, it is likely taken from another horn, because I’m playing on a Yamaha YBH301M)

Got a euphonium from a local instrument library - having troubles playing it

I recently just graduated high school and lost access to my school euphonium i loved dearly. I was a very decent player and I remember the sound I could make and my abilities of my range very strongly. I am saving to buy a new one - but in the meantime I’m using a decent(?) condition euphonium from an instrument library near me. I have 6 years experience on the euph.

I need to know if my playing has deteriorated in such a short amount of time of not playing (about 3 months) because I’m becoming frustrated. It’s very hard to get a coherent smooth sound out of this euphonium, specifically long tones. Sometimes i buzz or put air through my mouthpiece and you can hear the air coming out the bell - no sound. I also use to have an extremely clear high range, and now its like i can’t push out more then a high f (barely) I don’t want to be that guy but i know my playing hasn’t deteriorated that much. It never did when i spent a summer away from my euph. I’m worried somethings wrong with the instrument somehow. It feels like im a beginner again and I don’t understand why. I posted pics of the condition and model below.

Any suggestions? Maybe I could be playing wrong? Is it harder to play on this model? I’m just worried i’ve somehow become a poor player overnight.

Think it can be fixed?

Hey there gang!

Recently got the itch to play the Euphonium again, and found what I thought was a good deal for a Yamaha YEP321 on Marketplace.

Completely missed it, but there’s damage on the tubing going into the first valve.

Think it’s fixable, or is it just a paperweight now?

Howdy, for a college audition, I was going to play the intro to morceau symphonic for the lyrical part, and the ending of Pantomime for the technical part. I already have both songs very well down and just wanted suggestions for possibly a different lyrical song?

Edit: or potentially the first page of Harlequin, I also have that pretty down

Euphonium Repair Question

My son played euphonium in high school. He has a Yamaha YEP-842S Custom Professional, SN 382513. It has not been touched in 2 years. How do I find a reputable person to repair it? And second question, where is the best place to list it for sale once it’s repaired? Thanks!

trouble with high e flat intonation

i’m struggling to lip bend my
high e flat in tune consistently, it’s always been one of my sharpest notes, and all of my other first valve partials are in tune so i don’t want to fiddle with the slide, it’s usually around 40 cents sharp, and because it’s a higher note, i can’t figure out what to do with my embouchure to bring it down, i’ve thought abt using alternate fingerings, like my fourth valve, but i wanted to ask here first before i make any fingerings changes, does anyone have a similar problem that they dealt with and tips to fix it?
