General Work Study Financial Aid is out

Hi all! Just a friendly reminder that work study is out today :) I applied at 12am and just got approved at 10am

A financial aid advisor told me they changed the way you get work study, so now you have to request it:

  1. Log into your UCSC portal and go to the last section titled “Undergraduate Student eForms”
  2. Click on “Request Work-Study”. It should be really simple, I literally just clicked “I would like to be considered for work-study” and pressed submit
  3. Wait until you get an email saying your request has been approved then log back in and go to “financial aid” and “accept/decline awards” for 2027. You should see an option titled “Federal Work Study Eligibility”, check the box for accept and press submit, then you should be done :)

Hope this helped!

Has anyone gotten a meeting with the aid office this week? I joined the zoom yesterday at 8am, waited till 12, and the entire time my screen said “waiting for host to start the meeting.” Same thing is happening today. Does anyone know what’s up?

Rant Racism in town?

I was just hanging out with my Indian friend and he was buying a tee shirt at Pacific Wave. I am white. Th e employees followed us around the store and asked for a photo ID to match the credit card my friend used. I've never been carded at Pacific Wave. Is this racist?

Have you guys seen other examples of racism in town?

Question messed up my freshman year

long story short: had a super close family friend pass away towards the end of Q1, got super depressed and wasn’t motivated at all academically.

this caused my gpa to fall below 2.0

now im at risk of losing my financial aid.

currently in the process of appealing my financial aid decision.

so my question is have any of y’all gone through this or anything similar. how generous are they while reviewing your appeal? I am planning on speaking about the passing of my family friend but they require some sort of proof such as a death certificate. how strict are they on this? i have screen shots of his go fund me that was posted during the time of his funeral and I am hoping they accept that because I would feel absolutely terrible asking his parents for proof of his passing just to fill out my appeal.

any advice on how you guys overcame this? should i be stressed out or will ucsc understand my situation?

ever since i received the email telling me to appeal the financial decision i have been nothing but stressed out

any replies and/or upvotes are appreciated <3

Discussion parking at utc :(

Currently a 3rd year about to move into UTC this upcoming year, but I just found out they don’t have parking available there. Are there any secure parking options closeby in the downtown area (that preferably won’t cost an arm and a leg)? Really trying to avoid being a bus commuter for another year since UTC is like a 20-30 min ride from campus and the buses here have always been pretty unreliable timing-wise

Question Living in a quad at Porter vs UTC triple

Hi! Desperate for advice. I'm a transfer roommates seemed very odd right if the bat, haven't even moved in yet. I asked to see if I could switch to another triple in the transfer community . The person I was emailing with told me that there was a UTC triple available. I was curious, but not at all already to commit to that, but she had already moved me. I asked to move back and she said that my only option now is a quad in the transfer community.

I don't know what to do. UTC seems nice but a 20-50 minute bus drive multiple times a day sounds awful. Living with four people could be alright but I can't find a single video or a photo of what that would even look like. Also, 4 people to a room sounds like i'd never be getting any privacy. Idk idk idk pls help lol

Question incoming UCSC student here. Should I be concerned of the deadly goblin on campus?

As the title says, should I be concerned about the deadly goblin in campus? When I came to campus I was using the bathroom near the student union building where this 2 and a half foot goblin came in, crawled under my stall and started poking me with his finger. I was able to kick it away and lock it out of the student building but when I asked the people at the front desk they told me it was just the "deadly goblin." Should I be concerned about seeing it again next year, and will it remember me?

Event Santa Cruz Marathon Bib

Hi! I’m hoping to sell/transfer my Santa cruz marathon bib for Oct 25, 2026. I registered a month ago, but have not kept up with training, and my work schedule has changed so I won’t be in California that weekend. I can transfer the ticket to a friend, and I originally bought it for $200 (race is now sold out). DM if you are interested!

Question Should I bring my car?

Incoming Freshman this fall. I know we don’t get on campus parking but I’ve been able to find off campus parking for about 800 a year.

I know it’s an expense (I can definitely afford it) but will the time I get even be worth it? Plus I just got a new M340i that I have modded (I’m a car guy) and I’d really hate to let it sit at home.

From experience, is it better to just adjust to campus lifestyle and stay trapped within the campus? Or is having a car (2 miles off campus) actually worth it for days I don’t have classes or on weekends?

What if I want to go out to eat, or go on longer trips? How do people who don’t have cars do it?

Before people ask, I do have a good paying job. Having a car will definitely be more fun and flexible, but I’d also rather put all that cost into my trading’s account and ira’s. Will benefits outweigh cost?

Thanks!

Question Parking permit

Hi I forgot to order a parking permit for this year. I’m looking for the R permit for the academic year. I’m living in the Delaware apts this year. Am I cooked?
I also don’t see “R permit for the academic year” available, does that mean there is no more at all?
