Miscellaneous Is the JD worth it if I don't want to become a lawyer?

This might be a stupid question, but after working at a law firm, ive been quite turned away from actually working as a lawyer. So im wondering what other people think about doing the JD to have that specialised degree but not actually becoming a practicing lawyer.

How is the difficulty to reward ratio as well? Is just having that JD worth the struggle to NOT become a lawyer?

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries why can you not just answer my question

Guys ed discussion is the most pointless thing ever. Lecturers/tutors say to ask a question there, but literally any question you get an answer like "Look at Topic 3 lecture" "Read the coversheet". whats the fucking point of having it if no questions can be answered.

Miscellaneous Question bout my friends

They ask me to hang out all the time but, Whenever I’m with them; I feel sort of side tracked. Like as if I’m third wheeling them. Ik I should be grateful that I have friends in the first place but, the more I hang out w them, the lonelier it feels.

Miscellaneous genuinely want the physics 1 students’ opinion on labs.

i absolutely despise these practicals. i do chem 1 and bio lc, and their labs are so well thought out and detailed, and the labs don’t look like a repurposed prison. the actual experiments could genuinely be done in like $5, and for 4 labs, we’ve spent 3 of them determining g with increasingly worse methods. my question is whether its a me problem or is this a sentiment shared by other physics 1/first year physics students. hundreds of people do physics 1 every year, for the physics majors, engineering majors or for the masters programs, but it feels like its a brand new trial subject that was thrown together in half an hour as a side project. if you don’t have any experience with the subject(s), don’t respond, not trying to get unhelpful comments like “welcome to the real world”

How challenging is unimelb Data Science Masters?

I have completed BSc majoring in Data Science and it was not that bad for me but I am a bit worried about Masters…

Is there anywhere I can find some of the content taught in the Data Science Masters?

New Student Received a JD FFP offer!!!!

Hi guys,

Just received a JD FFP offer after being on the waitlist for a very excruciating few weeks😭😭

I’m wondering if I can still receive a CSP or a MLLSP or another scholarship because my offer makes it seem like there’s no hope :

“Your application has been considered for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) but this offer is for an Australian fee place. The selection process for CSPs is highly competitive and, while it has been determined that you meet the minimum entry requirements for the course, your application has not been found to be competitive for a CSP at this time.

I have a 74 WAM from unimelb and financial GAM and also medical GAM for context so I was really hoping for some kind of scholarship

If i do get a scholarship, how soon can I expect to receive another email?

Hey guys I'm a second year at Monash University doing commerce and computer science, wanted to ask if there's anyone willing to team up for this hackathon hosted by the Data Science Student Society of Unimelb. You also don't need to a student from university of Melbourne.

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Intro Macro MST

Anyone wanna comment if the intro macro MST is normally hard?

The practice one we got doesn't seem that bad as long as you take some educated guesses and know the basic formulas and math etc. Around 12/20 i'd say with minimum knowledge on the subject.

Am I just stressing out or should it lowkey be chill.

Also why is the Ed board lowkey useless, you ask a question explaining how to approach a question or what the answer is and the option is just like go to a consultation.😭

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries I’m currently doing master of laws, is it worth it doing master of commercial/baking and finance law straight away to get the specialisation?

I am 24yo and I have a bachelor of law from my country and I’m currently doing master of laws in unimelb
I’m a sponsored student and my scholarship is valid until March 2028 which means that if I do another masters i’m not gonna pay anything out of pocket.
So is the extra year worth it?

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Need help deciding between unimelb, monash, deakin, and usyd for Psych undergrad!

Hi! I’m an international student from Malaysia with a 43/45 for IBDP who’s currently stumped on which Australian university to pick. For context, I’m planning to pursue clinical psychology so I defo need to do honours and masters as well, and I have family that live very close (around 10-20 minute drive) to Monash University, Deakin and Unimelb so I get free accommodation with them if I do my undergraduate in Melbourne, but I need dorming if I go to Sydney.

This is the current status of my offers,

University of Melbourne: Unconditional offer for Bachelor of Arts, awarded 20% Scholarship

Monash University: Unconditional offer for Bachelor of Psychology, awarded the VICE ASEAN Scholarship 20% + $12,000 one-off

Deakin University: Unconditional offer for Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), awarded Deakin Vice Chancellor's 100% Scholarship

University of Sydney: Unconditional offer for Bachelor of Psychology (Integrated Honours) (+ Dallyel’s Scholars Program), awarded 20% scholarship

Some extra points of context:

  • My parents favor the top ranking unis (unimelb + usyd) and are not very keen on Deakin due to its lower ranking/reputation
  • They are helping to pay for my tuition (which they say is no problem), but personally I don’t want to be a financial burden
  • I am an artist as well so the flexible bachelor of arts programmes really appeal to me personally
  • I already have a few friends at Unimelb, and a cousin who goes to Monash
  • I have to accept an my Deakin scholarship in 2 weeks, and my Monash one in 11 days, but I’m still working on my personal statement for a 100% at Usyd (though my agent says its a low chance)
  • My priorities are a good quality education, campus culture, ranking/reputation, and growth opportunities

How do these unis compare and how was your experience at unimelb(especially for those doing psych)? Any advice on which university I should pick?

Support PhD Decision mixed feelings

Hi all I need some guidance. Earlier this year an old lecturer reached out to me on LinkedIn and said she thought I would be a great applicant for a PhD she was supervising. For reference I’m 27 and I’d never really thought about pursuing research after my masters and I currently do like where I work. The program itself requires a mandatory 12 months overseas in the UK. I ended up going through the application process and interview, I then had a further chat with the supervisor who told me I was the preferred applicant but she could sense I was unsure about moving overseas. After sitting with it I decided to accept the offer, but deep down I knew I wasn’t sure if I was accepting it out of a guilt that it was an offer I should pursue or if I truly wanted the offer. At this stage I was single but recently over the last month or two I was seeing some and eventually it was decided to end things prematurely since I was moving and we didn’t want to become too attached when we new long distance wasn’t viable. This was recent and it kinda brought up lots of those anxious feelings I have towards the move and again whether it was something I wanted, I enjoy so many aspects of Melbourne and never considered a move away until this. I’ve spoken to people who say I should go for it to explore a new chapter but honestly I’m happy with where I’m at here. Just searching for some insight and advice on the situation, anything is appreciated. It also starts Dec on paper but next year in reality, so I want to give the supervisor enough time to find a replacement if I decide to withdraw.

Holy shit I have never been so COOKED in my life.

I know the finals are still some time away but how similar are the samples/past exams to the actual exams for this unit? I feel that I am especially stupid with even understanding the material for this class even with the book. How do I even lock in for this class??

Opportunities Construction Management RMIT or B.Design Unimelb?

Right now, I'm studying Architecture at RMIT. Im thinking of switching into the construction field, since thats what I prefer. However, now I'm stuck at which uni and courses I should go into.

If I choose RMIT construction management, theres a change that I can skip the first year and go straight into second year. However, Unimelb sounds like a better uni and offers bachelor of design majoring in construction but you might have to complete a masters program.

Please let me know your experiences or just general input! Thanks!

Support Extensions application page not working?

Hello, as the title says I am experiencing troubles with even submitting any applications for extensions. I have an AAP for chronic pain/fatigue that gives me extensions on request, however when I get to the ‘impacted assessments’ page, I can choose my subjects but none of the assessments come up, and this is for every subject, effectively making applying for extensions impossible unless I email my coordinators/tutors.
Had anyone had this issue or know of a way I can fix it so I don’t have to email every time?
I’ve tried using different devices/browsers, logging out and in again, changing my reason for extension, attempting to type the name of the assignment (won’t let me). I’ve basically exhausted all options.
Any advice is much appreciated given I have several assignments in the next few weeks that I know I’m behind on completing.

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Please help me - Design/Mechanical Engineering

So I got a ad.letter from unimelb that I was accepted into the bachelor of design/mechanical engineering. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I see many other people being in bachelor of science to be a mechanical engineer, so would it be better for me to take this route or try applying to monash instead?

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Is Bachelor of Design (Mechanical Engineering) at UniMelb actually worth it?

Greetings! So apparently I was able to get a admission letter from UniMelb for mechanical engineering. However, I only got as far as being accepted in the bachelor of design / mechanical engineering. To be completely honest, I have no clue, no idea, no information, nor the slightest of imagination as to how bad or good this really is. I've heard rumors about it, saying that this route is tougher in terms of schedule alongside mastering math and physics

For context, I am currently on a gap year living overseas, already set with all my IELTS/SAT requirements, and I am also considering applying to Monash as an alternative.

Main questions:

  • How brutal is the workload balance between creative design and heavy engineering math?
  • How hard/easy is it to transfer from B-Des to B-Sci along the run?
  • Do you feel like free time is hard to achieve with the extra slots being used for science studies

Please give me completely honest thoughts. Thank you! :""
