Is it normal?

I am that Bangladeshi who loves vegemite. So my question is that I have finished half kilo jar of vegemite in 14 days because I love it so much. I had it literally with everything. Is it normal to consume that much vegemite?

Now I am stuck with no vegemite since it was flown from Australia.

Wow! Now that is commitment. I don’t think most of us in Aus would eat that much in 2 weeks.

What do you do with it? Eg soups, curries, on bread? I’m curious.

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

Bread, cheese, egg, noodles, you name it lol.

1

u/dan_syd Jul 18 '26

Wouldn’t eat that much in 2 years tbh. Most jars end up well past their expiry date.

Adds to the taste experience I think

Ours last at least 12 months in our place

You know I have to agree. Expired Vegemite gets a really nice mellow flavour to it.

u/WhichPomegranate3586 Jul 22 '26

Its like the butter if u dont get a dry out bit ttying to spread it on toast... but did u see peanut butters changing... raspberry marshmallow flavour. Kids vegimight... feel like im too old at 30 what was wrong with the original...

1

u/BeginningImaginary53 Jul 22 '26

I actually add a teaspoon of Vegemite to my spag bol. Makes the flavour POP.

2

u/Leeroy_Biggins Jul 23 '26

I put it on fish then wrap it in foil to cook, amazing. I seen it on some outback cooking show back in the day. Vegemite is King 👑 I hope you get your next delivery 📦 soon

Uuuhhh, I'd be worried about sodium levels if I were you.

u/Important_Fruit Jul 19 '26

I'd be more worried about the state of their bathroom!

Yeah, I need to be aware of that.

1

u/Amazed4life111 Jul 19 '26

There's now a 40% less salt version

1

u/KateBosworth Jul 20 '26

Unfortunately it doesn’t have that Vegemite-like oomph, though it is good if you want it on toast with something quite salty like Feta.

1

u/moonlit_fores7 Jul 20 '26

That's about 41g of salt (3300mg of sodium /100g = 8.25g of salt). So about 2.9g of salt a day over 14days, which leaves about another 2g of salt to consume each day before you hit the heart foundation max salt daily intake. You could down almost another jar!

3

u/ProseAndCons180 Jul 19 '26

I feel like you might have a B vitamin deficiency. I mean, it’s tasty but it’s not THAT tasty, iykwim. 🤪

4

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

You are being traitorous to your Aussie blood if you undermine the superior flavour of vegemite even with your words.

3

u/Acceptable_Lake_6996 Jul 20 '26

might be my fav comment on reddit! 😂

- signed, vegemite, cheese & salada combo lover 🤎

1

u/ProseAndCons180 Jul 20 '26

Lol! I’ve been eating it for 40+ years!! You’ll calm down soon enough. 😂

1

u/Leeroy_Biggins Jul 23 '26

Yes, Vegemite is King 👑

2

u/bananagetter Jul 20 '26

Its possible, especially if they’re vegetarian!

3

u/Quintus-Sertorius Jul 19 '26

That is a lot of salt.

3

u/burn_after_reading90 Jul 19 '26

I consume around 1kg every 3-4 months

Costco jumbo tub

You need to find someone flying in from Australia, it shouldn’t be too difficult

Edit Woolworths does a 2.5kg tub

2

u/lun4d0r4 Jul 18 '26

... Were you eating it with a spoon?

My hat lasts almost a year.

4

u/Embarrassed_Spell383 Jul 18 '26

Need to buy a better hat mate

3

u/lun4d0r4 Jul 18 '26

🤣

My most amusing typo to date, anyone know if there's a sub for them?

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

When I am bored I open the jar and nibble on it. The taste is too addictive.

2

u/Tropical_life_7 Jul 19 '26

I do that too... but my family of 7 goes through a jar every three months or so. Beware too much salt!

3

u/Tropical_life_7 Jul 19 '26

To be fair, sometimes more like every 2 months... def not two weeks for a solo effort though!

1

u/fromthe80smatey Jul 18 '26

My akubra is a couple decades old. I like Vegemite too!

3

u/BrionyHQ Jul 18 '26

No that’s not normal. I mean, I’ve never met someone who are that much Vegemite. And I’m Australian and we love it. But that’s next level

3

u/JuanFoYoMamma Jul 19 '26

That is really unhealthy. By yourself? Most Australians wouldn't eat that much in 3mths. Even 6mths, and for many that's a year's worth.

3

u/KlikketyKat Jul 19 '26

I think most of us spread it fairly thin, especially since it is high in salt. A little goes a long way. I can remember enjoying licking it from a spoon as a child, though!

1

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

I would watch shows licking it from spoon lol.

3

u/_ricardo_ Jul 19 '26

Err you were Bangladeshi. With that amount of Vegemite in your system you’re welcome to play for Australia.

1

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

Godly condiment, mate. Can't complain about not being a Bangladeshi anymore.

3

u/shavedratscrotum Jul 19 '26

No.

Also.

If you're susceptible to gout.

May god have mercy on your soul.

2

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

I need nore vegemite to show proper mercy to my soul.

3

u/Visual_Shame_4641 Jul 19 '26

You... need to slow down. That is a lot of sodium.

1

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

Not my fault that Australia made it so addictive.

1

u/Visual_Shame_4641 Jul 20 '26

Oh, I know. I grew up eating it. It's amazing. But it's too powerful to be eaten like that. Vegemite is stronger than any human.

2

u/Kailynna Jul 19 '26

You might find miso a good substitute until you can obtain more Vegemite.

2

u/aggressivelynude Jul 20 '26

I've heard enough. Give this man a citizenship.

2

u/OptimalAttempt7573 Jul 22 '26

You are now Australian.

2

u/Fuzzybricker Jul 22 '26

You may have a vitamin B deficiency if you enjoy it that much! But if not, enjoy the flavour and goodness!

2

u/cewumu Jul 22 '26

You’re treating it like achar guess, which kind of works because it’s salty and punchy. Just remember it is salty|

1

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 22 '26

Better than achar. Far better.

3

u/Outrageous-Ad-9635 Jul 18 '26

That’s a lot of Vegemite. If you’re going to consume it at that rate you should probably get onto the salt reduced version. The flavour is the same.

2

u/JohnnySock Jul 19 '26

Check your birth certificate. You're Australian.

And yes, that's not just normal, it means you are a legend.

0

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

Thank you thank you.

1

u/BPhB696 Jul 19 '26

My friend used to cook with it. Maybe that's what she doing. Mate used to fry up mince beef with heaps of Vegemite. Was quite nice tbh....was 45 years ago though 🤔

1

u/AntSilly2802 Jul 19 '26

Did you know that two female junkies in Australia once injected Vegemite intravenously? Vegemite straight into the vein, through the heart and into the brain. One of the girls died instantly.

1

u/Brave-Echidna6336 Jul 19 '26

What did I just read

1

u/AntSilly2802 Jul 19 '26

Yeah it was in the 90s. They were heroin addicts in withdrawal and I guess they used Vegemite because when mixed with water looks like the black tar heroin they were using. The brain associates the pleasure rush with the visual of the black stuff going into the vein. That is how powerful heroin addiction is. One dropped dead and the other had no negative reaction. It was in the news. Very sad, just a couple of young girls.

1

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 19 '26

Vegemite is to be consumed with mouth. Veins cannot TASTE the umami of vegemite.

1

u/meski_oz Jul 19 '26

Amazon probably has a subscription for it

1

u/Kbradsagain Jul 19 '26

that’s a lot of Vegemite. with that much salt you might be at risk of high blood pressure

1

u/SwimmingRush9639 Jul 20 '26

No, but you might either get some more or try something even better than Vegemite. I’m Australian, but I wouldn’t need Vegemite if you paid me.

1

u/Luna88_88 Jul 20 '26

That’s funny ..

1

u/skyofdiamond Jul 21 '26

I love that you’ve embraced our Aussie specialty Vegemite :) but yeah it does have quite a high salt content so perhaps space it out a bit but glad you enjoyed it

1

u/MrSparklesan Jul 21 '26

solid effort… that would last 3 months in our house.

1

u/Lawlietz Jul 21 '26

Nice lie show us a pic of the Vegemite

1

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 21 '26

And what do I gain by lying?

1

u/OkSpring5922 Jul 21 '26

You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Vegemite, almost like the pica that pregnant women sometimes get. You need to cut down, seriously. That much salt is bad for you.

1

u/Empty_Blacksmith5388 Jul 21 '26

No worries. I cannot get vegemite in my country.

1

u/smiles17_24 Jul 22 '26

Vegemite is yummy, I love it. 70g of it a day is wild concept, to use up a kg in 14 days but I appreciate the love for Vegemite and am sad you have now run out 😭. Might have to ship 2 kgs a month then 😂

Normal, probably not in comparison to how most would use it in Australia, I'd say a tbsp (15g on 2 slices of toast for example) would be more typical, but some people do a really light covering of it, I like a good amount of it and it's good in dishes too, like stews, spaghetti Bolognese, gravies, marinades.

1

u/BeginningImaginary53 Jul 22 '26

Wiping a lot🤔🤣

0

u/CumpyGrunt Jul 19 '26

Not normal lol. You can ignore the concerns below on the sodium intake though, depending on what else you ate each day of course, as that works out to be 35 grams per day which equals 1155mg of sodium per day, well below the recommended max of 2300mg or even the heart foundations 1500mg.

2

u/awholebagofcheese Jul 19 '26

As long as OP isn't consuming salt in other things at the same time though 😅 And assuming they are eating a relatively similar amount each day, not skipping days and making up the difference..

Mostly Im impressed, I thought I ate a fair bit of vegemite and just replaced the big jar I bought 7-8 months ago

1

u/CumpyGrunt Jul 19 '26

Of course, that's why I mentioned that it depended on what else they were eating. Skipping a day and doubling up would be 70 grams of vegemite, that's hardcore.

1

u/awholebagofcheese Jul 19 '26

I feel like 35g is pretty hard-core itself, thats 3 tablespoons or 9 teaspoons of vegemite.

This should be an alternative to citizenship test imo, fast track them!

2

u/CumpyGrunt Jul 19 '26

lol, it is a lot, can't even imagine how you'd manage to down that much, Op is a happy little vegemite.

0

u/AlanofAdelaide Jul 19 '26

Marmite's better! I'll get me coat..........

0

u/Smushy_Peas Jul 20 '26

Your shit would look like fresh tar by now, surely
