100% lol! Also, it’s just nice being able to actually see what’s happening on the screen. I’ve seen some pretty atrocious camera shakes in my day.
34
u/fjhgy May 18 '26
The only time it sometimes seems to work well is when it's supposed to be debilitating. Like when an enemy staggers you.
7
u/TastyFappuccino May 18 '26
Yes. I want to feel my skill/responsiveness/perceptions stagger when the hazards of the environment cause me to lose footing. But I’m an immersion junkie

I like camera shake. To be honest I don’t even notice it
→ More replies (2)5
u/Madara1389 May 18 '26
Me too. Then again, I primarily play games with lots of big explosions, so the screen shake is a huge part of the immersion.
Playing BF1 with the screen shake turned off feels just as off as trying to play with the game audio muted. If a massive explosion goes off 100 feet from me, I can expect the ground to shake beneath my feet. I don't see another way of simulating that without screen shake.

Motion blur and chromatic aberration are of course off, by default, for all eternity. I mean, they're probably the first mods that are coming out if a game doesnt have them as options.
DOF, lens flare or ray tracing are de gustibus, they're not innerently awful or anything, how the other 2 are.
79
u/GXVSS0991 May 18 '26
is it crazy that I actually like motion blur and chromab, dof, lens flare, camera shake, etc? shit feels like im playing a movie.
37
u/just_gonna_send_er May 18 '26
I think it just depends on the game. If it’s more story driven and I can still at least hit 60FPS, sure give me the movie feel. But if it requires reaction time/precision then I turn that stuff off.
15
u/Steezle May 18 '26
I think motion blur also can vary a whole lot in quality. Good motion blur is subtle and/or provides a bit of style to an otherwise simple animation.
→ More replies (2)6
u/ThisIsMyCouchAccount May 18 '26
I've been playing a lot of Satisfactory lately. It has a slider for motion blur. Not just on/off.
I leave it at the lowest level. My machine is running a perfectly locked in 144fps at native. That little bit just evens things out. When I turn it all the way off it doesn't feel....I don't know...natural?

Man I realized last month that I've been living with chromatic aberration ever since I got glasses. I thought everyone saw the colors separate from purple lights but it was just my glasses for all these years

→ More replies (1)9
u/Beginning-Pop3127 May 18 '26
Chromatic aberration is something films try to prevent tho
8
5
u/Shigg May 18 '26
The key is they "try" to prevent it. Movies have been around for a century and we as humans got used to shitty lenses.
2
u/Manchves May 18 '26
I mean, this just isn't universally true. Plenty of directors and DPs chose to use old lenses, uncoated lenses, old Kowa anamorphics which are super soft at the edges, old K35s shot wide open for artistic reasons. Yeah some of them are art films like Brown Bunny being filmed on ancient Bausch and Lomb Baltars, but Fraser shot Dune on rehoused Soviet era Helios lenses, etc. There’s an entire rental house in LA called Old Fast Glass because people want to shoot on lenses with character not just super sharp modern glass.
7
u/gregthefeg May 18 '26
What’s chromatic aberration and why should I turn it off? I turn off motion blur, camera shake and film grain for obvious reasons but what does chromatic aberration do?
→ More replies (2)8
u/Wavenian May 18 '26
It's a simulation of a camera lens effect where there is a color error on edges of objects.

8
u/EverlastingApex May 18 '26
It baffles me too, games look absolutely insane with ray tracing, I wish every game had it
→ More replies (1)3
u/Senior_Relief3594 May 18 '26
Because it usually kills framepacing even when you get good framerates.
Although this varies game by game, minimal RT touchups are usually fine. But full on Path Tracing with heavily deferred rendering kills any motion clarity and image consistency
2
u/Mean_Combination_830 May 18 '26
Well I'm technically an AMD on PS5 Pro user but absolutely love ray tracing

What is "de gustibis"? Does it mean "personal taste"? "To your liking"?
5
u/-Sniper-_ May 18 '26
gustibus, typo. By taste. You can turn off lens flare to have a clean image, but its also not something particularly bad and it only shows in certain moments.

For a single player story-driven game I’ll keep some stuff on as it can make the game feel more cinematic.
For a multiplayer game though every one of these is getting turned off without hesitation. Frame rate and player visibility are paramount

u/HatingGeoffry May 18 '26
I can run ray-tracing, so why would I turn it off?
65
u/Hottage May 18 '26
As long as the frame rates are above 60 I just crank every setting I can.
VRR OLED display and Ray Tracing 👌
13
9
u/deathdisco_89 May 18 '26
Depends on impact to frame rate.
39
u/GARGEAN May 18 '26
No, not really. Depends on final framerate only. I don't give a flying fuck if game can run at 300fps without RT. If it can run healthily above 60 with RT on - I have RT on and slap FG for some visual smoothness.

In some games it just doesn't look good, at least to me, most of the times I've tried it I always turn it off after a couple minutes, it makes games look weird
The huge performance impact in some games is also annoying, I'd much rather play at 120fps Medium settings RT off than 60fps Ultra RT on, but to each their own I guess
6
u/BR0METHIUS May 18 '26
Resident Evil Requiem with path tracing looks amazing. Can literally see your reflection in real time in glass. Characters head moves with your mouse movements and everything.
I spent the first part of that game just looking at different reflective surfaces.

59
u/peoplepersonmanguy May 18 '26
I can't hear what's being said without subtitles.
15
u/Randyaccredit May 18 '26
I can hear but I want to make sure I hear what they say. Along with that what if something is coming past loud and you can't hear it, you got subs man.
→ More replies (3)2
u/incrediblynormalpers May 18 '26
I can't see what is going on with subtitles. I can't not read them. They get turned off for 'immersion' and because I don't care that much about the cutscenes.
3
u/PepijnLinden May 18 '26
I like having subtitles on. Even if I can understand what's being said just fine there's moments where I don't want to have to pay attention all the time. I can just see what's being said in one glance and then focus on other things. Also sometimes there's loud explosions and other sfx that make it hard to hear everything perfectly.
If I had to name a downside, it's that sometimes there's a dramatic pause in the dialogue before they drop something important or a punchline to a joke and then they already have the whole sentence on screen which kind of ruins the delivery.
