Funny People defending SONY after today's announcementts
730
u/Warblast995 Jul 01 '26
I don't quite care if people prefer digital over physical, but to defend the reduction of consumer choice is basically sheep behavior.
209
u/Cheese0089 Jul 01 '26
Not to mention, digitally only purchasers benefits from physical games. Why? Because of competition. Right now I can buy my PS5 games at Walmart, Game Stop, Target, etc. In 2028, your only option is the PlayStation Store and that means less incentive to ever lower prices. No more sales just to clear stock.
89
u/RadagastTheWhite Jul 01 '26
Yeah we’ll see $80-$100 full price games and after a year or 2 they’ll go on “sale” for $60-$80
41
u/biodude481 Jul 01 '26
We're already seeing that. Games don't get reductions in price anymore, and get the same discounts every sale.
→ More replies (14)19
u/RadagastTheWhite Jul 01 '26
Yeah and it’ll only get worse from here. BG3 for example is 3 years old with no physical release outside of Japan and it never goes on sale for less than $50. That’ll be the new norm

Digital media and ownership do not go hand in hand.
You can't pass it on to a friend, you can sell it off second hand, you can't give it to a family member - today or 30 years from now. Fuck man, officially they don't even let you bequeath digital products off to your children, rofl. It's a racket.
You're not thinking about 'digital ownership', what you're thinking about is "Digital Rights Management", and the only managing going on is convincing you that you still own what you don't.

u/Yellow_Snow_Cones Jul 01 '26
I mostly stopped buying digital in the xbox 360 days when they unlisted by favorite game and I lost it. Now I only buy digital no PC and only for super cheap games.

And Sony's sales are already spread out. Enjoy waiting 2 months for a particular game to go on sale again since there's zero competition
Again this is per game. You braindead fanboys, please spare me your "Bbbut Sony always has sales" nonsense

u/Amazing_Direction849 Jul 01 '26
or the market will complete crash as more and more plays just stop buying games. I thought $60 was to much. There no way im buying a bave game for $80 or over. They have lost there mind. I can spend my money on something else. Be it a book, vinyl record, cheaper anime figure, a new set of decent wood chisels after sharpening. There just so much I can buy with $80 to $100 dollars and that is what the games will be completing with.

Yeah not to mention I often get very cheap deal on Facebook second hand market for switch game, providing u know how to negotiate, and cheap game fb post often sold out fast in group
2
u/Suspicious_Two786 Jul 01 '26
Yah on PC and other platforms you can still buy digital games off other retailers so there's still some competitions. Sony's the only one who doesn't offer that and nobody complain.

Blame can be placed on people for steering the trend towards this direction. But in the end, its their choice. Whether we agree with it or not.
Blame can and should also be placed on these companies for taking away a choice from consumers. At it's core, it's an anti-consumer practice. But in the end, all companies are going to chase profits and the difference is so large now that it just makes sense for them to do this.

Consumers set the trend in this case and many such cases. Not enough people bought physical copies for it to be viable. It sucks for people who prefer physical but it’s been business 101 in capitalist societies for centuries. People are rightfully pissed at PS but this is just the latest example of the system at work, anger towards individual corps is the distraction that keeps the wheels turning

u/CankerLord Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
People will try to argue against this by insisting that physical is still popular but the thing they're not accounting for is most people aren't going to stop buying video games just because they can't get a physical copy. They're also not accounting for the amount of money Sony will save by getting out of the game printing business entirely. Logistics is fucking expensive. It's not just the cost of printing the disc they're saving, it's the pruning of the entire part of the business that's responsible for handling that activity.
It's a business, simplicity is profit.
18
u/Mageborn23 Jul 01 '26
No one's defending them, but the fact that you think any company isn't out for their own interests is hilarious. Corporations are always gonna choose money over your choices or beliefs. They don't care about you. You're just a pile of money to them.
2
u/LogensTenthFinger Jul 02 '26
Of course they are out for their own interests, which is why you attack them relentlessly for this and make it against their interests.

49
u/dangerdangle Jul 01 '26
A lot of these posts (such as OP) are referring to people that aren't even defending it, but rather just trying to be realistic about what is coming
I collect physical media and am getting shit on for telling people reddit isn't a representation, when I have literally seen this scenario first hand with Blu-ray and who won (it wasn't physical)
14
u/GOT_Wyvern Jul 01 '26
This is where I stand.
While it would be preferable, if it isn't profitable, then the distribution costs are just going to be shifted onto consumers.
I can't imagine the process manufacturing, distributing, and negotiating sales liscenes is a cheap affair, and if physical copies are not in high enough demand to be making a profit, the costs are going to be spread across all consumers.
10
u/DECAThomas Jul 01 '26
As someone in supply chain, people vastly underestimate the costs of physical distribution, not to mention shelf space (“slotting fees”) at retailers, and the physical printing, production, and material costs.
Shifting towards digital distribution is one of the things that has kept video games cheap relative to inflation in comparable industries.
None of this is a defense of the option being taken away, I collect physical media and stuff like this pisses me off. But I’m curious what the backlash, and sales numbers, would have been if they raised the price of physical copies by $5-$10. Would appreciate if this goes the way of music, and developers are able to retain the rights of physical distribution for collectors items, similar to what we now see with vinyls.
5
u/GOT_Wyvern Jul 01 '26
Being honest, I am surprised that Sony didn't simply raise the price of physical copies and massively reduce their manufacturing, as I could easily see collectors being willing to pay the extra fee.
3
u/P_ZERO_ Jul 01 '26
Not to mention high street retail is dying on it's ass. I don't know a single person that has or would go to a brick and mortar store to buy a game in the last 15 years plus. Sony or whoever else aren't going to manufacture copies to line store shelves that aren't being frequented.
→ More replies (10)2
u/britipinojeff Jul 01 '26
Well Nintendo is doing that right? Some of their new games are releasing with different prices for physical vs digital.

I mean, look at the other comments in this thread. People think pointing out that this is a result of consumer habits is defending sony.
It's really depressing how conspiratorial people get when the real answer is just look at the data, the reasoning behind these decisions are very obvious. The average person doesn't care and that doesn't change no matter how much *you* really care.

Nuance on the internet is never allowed. You have to be completely on one side or the other. And theres a part of me that gets it in some ways. Like if someone is on the side of the Republicans or is a "centrist", I wouldnt trust them. Especially as a gay man. But most things in the world do have grey areas, or at the very least we can be rational and think things through. I like my physical media, but I also get that its not what it used to be. I also get technology has gotten better. I also get a lot of other points. And I can say that while also saying I dont plan to buy a PS6 despite owning every PS console and having games for all of them.

At least people won't be mislead into thinking they own software or their access cant be remotely revoked just because they got a plastic circle anymore.
Until we get real consumer protections that ensure your purchase is more than just a temporary license, this is immaterial.
We need a real fix in regulation, not misleading discourse over meaningless "physical media" in an age where you probably would have needed to be online anyway for the game to validate and allow you access.

u/grifter356 Jul 01 '26
This is the problem that I have with this whole discussion. There's nothing to defend, but the people who are acting like discs give them something that digital doesn't, or that this is the beginning of the end for consumer protection, are either being either just as dishonest and insincere as the people defending Sony, or at best simply just uninformed.
I have not bought a disc for over 10 years, so this does not matter to me in any way shape or form. However, having a physical disc does in fact matter to some people, and for those people this really sucks and I don't blame them for being upset.
Having said that, they need to either be honest or be aware that their preference for physical discs is rooted purely in personal preference or nostalgia. The only objective benefit a physical disc has over a digital copy is reducing the amount of storage space a game takes up on your console, but outside of that it does not provide any material benefit, and it certainly does not provide some elevated and more secure form of ownership.

They never stopped making CDs...
In fact the music industry is making more money than ever with physical media collectors
It's only the game companies that are so DRM heavy that they choose to trip over dollars to pick up pennies.
2
u/AdAcademic842 Jul 02 '26
Please expand on how it’s profitable on a large scale to produce a medium just for collectors? Also, it’s just the next logical step. Ultimately, it’ll just be streaming. No license, no code. Netflix for games.
I am of the generation that lent games to friends, brought cases to school to show it off, played Golden Eye split screen - who’s doing that anymore? If you’re playing with a friend it’s online. Sharing discs is already cumbersome because you have to download the games onto your system. The mechanisms to make Sony’s decision and GTA’s disc-less release possible have been building up for at least a decade. This is part of a long term plan.
So, complain you can’t listen to your CDs in your car, share your games with your friends and display them in your room, or show off your blu-ray collection, then move on. Unless you give up gaming entirely, you’re just complaining for complaining sake.→ More replies (3)

I know people don't like it, but honestly you could see this miles away. People have been saying for years that an all digital future was just Inevitable.
Digital sales just astronomically overshadow physical. This is why I mainly switched to PC years ago.
The main draw of a console to me was physical, without that I have no interest in them. I hate to see physical go, but this was sadly expected.

If Nintendo is the only physical game left I would support them, until they put gkc on first party
Don't invest all of your game in a storefront or platform, I don't buy all my steam in steam, some on gog and eShop, most got it cheap on sales and I mostly buy first released full price only for physical, to resell back once I'm finished in 1-2month
I can't do that with digital so I wait for cheap sales
3
u/DingoBingob Jul 01 '26
All I ask is that the game quality be good and by me saying that I have never been satisfied. I will never buy full price from the sweat shop of a game studio. But the majority seem to love being bent over by daddy ps.

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Jul 02 '26
Some are bots
Some are just not smart people
It happens everywhere. For instance, world cup tickets are pretty highly priced. They could have been sold at a more reasonable price. It's not just supply and demand rising the prices on the aftermarket. But of course you get people defending that. Saying it's not that expensive. Or people in America should be able to afford it.
Some people just like to watch people struggle. Even if it's something simple like an entertainment that is screwing over it's customers

PC isn't a closed system being run and managed by a single company. You can source your digital games from multiple storefronts and other providers. This is not an apples to apples comparison.

u/Glass_Recover_3006 Jul 01 '26
Can you source your games from multiple sources? Cause every time I mention buying from somewhere that isn’t Steam it sure makes a lot of people angry.
2
u/xaervagon Jul 01 '26
I'll be honest and just say: for a lot of games, the answer is flat out 'no'. For a lot of indie devs and one man bands, they just pump out to Steam and nothing else.
Epic at least tries to keep up with mainstream releases.
For retro and older games, GOG great.
For certain indie games, GOG and itch.io are good options.
For doujin/japanese games, DLSite is king and has been for ages.
For visual novels and the like, JastStore and Mangagamer are solid options.
For adult games, take your pick: dlsite, the vn sites mentioned, itch.io, gog (they don't care as long as it's labeled). Most smaller publishers like Saikey, Kagura Games, Mango Party, and a bunch of others will just sell direct off their websites.
YMMV, and it really depends on what you're looking for and what you want to play.

u/xulitebenado Jul 01 '26

You can defend a company’s decision without treating them like a victim
3
u/AzerynSylver Jul 01 '26
Yeah. This was most likely a simple executive decision after seeing the statistics of digital purchases compared to physical. The cost of making a physical copy of a game is only $3, but they would produce at least a few hundred thousand at launch, costing them a decent sum, and since only 5% to 15% of consumers are buying these physical copies, it makes much more sense to save the money by going full digital.
I do not defend this from a consumer standpoint, as it will make it difficult to play new games once they are a few decades old. For example, my favourite game, Overlord, is from 2007, and if it never had a physical copy, I would have never been able to replay it. But from a business standpoint, Sony's decision makes sense.

u/Wacko_Doodle Jul 01 '26
Funny thing is if you got a ps2 with some physical games and played it next to them with their ps5; they'd end up dissing you for physical media, right up until the point you turn of the internet.
Suddenly they cannot play any games at all, while you can just continue enjoying ratchett and clank 3, crash twinsanity or dbz budokai 3. :p
Oh and I heard the physical cd reader for the ps5 requires internet access to use, so even that is gone the moment internet goes. Btw this is an extreme exaggeration but if the ps5 loses connection to the sony servers the same thing will happen.
Remember when all denuvo games lost access to their server for 1-2 days? Everyone freaked out because none of those games worked. Same situations.

What’s sad is I remember as a kid walking into GameStop with my crumpled up bills from my allowance, being able to buy a disc for often under 10 dollars and walking out with armfuls of games that I could pop in and play right away.
Today, a kid walks into a GameStop if their local store hasn’t been shutdown, has to save up upwards of 20 bucks, likely close to 30 bucks just to find one game they can afford. They go home and they pop it in just for it to take internet for it to download and play on a console their parents probably spent 700 bucks on.
They’re doing more and more to block certain people from playing games. If a kid can’t walk in with a crumpled dollar bill they’ve saved and walk away with a game, I say we’re worse off for it.

u/joncabreraauthor Jul 01 '26

For the people talking about pirating, that's why they are actively trying to match your real world identity to your online one and disguising it as "protecting the children". Everything is closing in. No one did anything about it. Unless a massive organized movement happens now (which I have ZERO faith due to the mouth breathers that gave Sony the balls to do this in the first place by preordering GTA 6 in droves) we will keep going faster and faster down this path. Pretty much all of big tech is and has been officially against us as a whole. Our data, money, ect... They want everything.

They have been making asinine decisions left and right for quite some time now. They can’t even make a decent controller anymore. Sad to see. Time to move on.

I think this just proves that the ps6 is gonna not even have a disc drive in any capacity, like not even on like the ps5 pro where you can buy the disc drive as an add on

Any advice to combat this? I’m thinking of getting a Xbox now.

Damn, just looked it up.
Thats wack. So what are videogames stores going to be now? Videogame merchandise stores?

u/itzMeDigi Jul 01 '26
Truth is people will forget about this or at the very least stop talking about it by end of week when Xbox sucks the air outta the room with layoffs and closures.

This picture isnt even a meme anymore its just an accurate representation of what happens whenever a AAA studio makes a controversial move

I actually, thankfully, do not see a lot of people defending these companies today.
I see a lot of mad, angry people though.

u/ElMarcusch Jul 01 '26
nah brah, don't use the guy who tried to punch a nazi as a template for that.

I've primarily gamed on Sony's consoles throughout my life. Back in 2017 when they started pulling these really shitty decisions on the PS4, I kept calling them out. The PS5 has easily been their worst console by far. Their fair of first party games has been abysmal this gen. Shady business practices and anti consumer policy decisions left and right. I've barely bought any PS5 games, and I mainly got the system just to play Demons' Souls remake.
They stick with this, I will just cut them off cold turkey. I already have a steam account for digital games. Steam puts things on sale for more often, has a much larger library, and I can play adult games that Sony doesn't allow. Sony has no advantage over that, and they're probably going to charge an arm and a leg for the PS6 as well.
Rest in piss Sony, you won't be missed.

u/Anderwreckz Jul 01 '26
Last time they actually gave a shit about physical releases was when they could use it to insult xbox, the second it's not useful to insult competition, throw it out (Sony's motto)

The worst is people defending it or saying they don't care directly after the news of Sony removing the 550 movies from libraries even purchased movies. This news literally landed at the same time and people acting like this cannot happened to digital purchased games.
2
u/AigledeFeu_ Jul 01 '26
And now they will have the store monopoly on playstation. I'm sure their customer service wont get worse

u/SnowmanMofo Jul 01 '26
Corporate greed is going to kill so much good things in the near future. We're absolutely cooked.

u/Apprehensive-Run2454 Jul 02 '26
The craziest part is they blamed our spending habits "most game purchases are digital this is the trend you guys set" as if they haven't made most physical disc and cartridge games pointless by not having the full game on the disc and often times a disc or cartridge isn't even available. It's obvious they just want to be able to resell you the same games with every new console generation.

The weirdos defending the lack of choice in gaming is absolutely insane
Anyone defending this are actively screwing themselves over
2
u/profchaos111 Jul 02 '26
I don't get why people are happy about losing choice it makes no sense. Nobody is stopping them from going all digital why do they care that people still want discs

u/BlueBirdSamurai Jul 02 '26
QUIT MAKING PEOPLE UP TO BE MAD ABOUT!!! Literally not a single person is defending this shit. You just want someone to be mad.
2
u/NoobMaster2789 Jul 02 '26
Bro, I don't think I've seen people defending this change. It's fucking dumb and everyone knows it
2
u/AAdmiral5657 Jul 02 '26
Smth worth noting, countries without PSN RELY on physical games. So playstation is basically dead to us now.
2
u/ShardDKaine197 Jul 02 '26
Dude fuck those corpo rat bastards im take some of my pay check and going down to my local gamestop to buy physical copies of games I want just to spite these fucks and if others buy shit online whoop de fucking doo, maybe I'll delete games I bought digitally free up some space at least until I can buy the steam machine they can't and wont fuck me over

u/TheWanderingSlime Jul 02 '26
If they’re doing this we need stop killing games right now and it needs to be expanded

u/Whiskers1996 Jul 02 '26
Crazy to see people complaining about the "room the games take up" or the "plastic waste" lol.
Meanwhile ps games don't take shit up and they collect pop figures n shit 😂

u/KarmicPlaneswalker Jul 02 '26
Bots and rage-baiting trash still trying to vomit word salad out of both sides of their mouth, "I don't care about this, buuuut..."
Make no mistake, this IS a terrible decision for the consumer. But we've reached the point where gamers are more or less okay with taking whatever shit the corpos are dishing out.

Ignorant assholes who are too spoiled to know what this means for other people.
7
u/CunningDruger Jul 01 '26
I do not get how people defend them at this point; “adaptive” pricing, games they refuse to release outside PS but do nothing with themselves, how most companies would rather not touch Spider-Man than work with Sony to use him because of how insanely overbearing they are around that character?
Trash company.
2
u/Jedzelex Jul 01 '26
Defending?
My dude, what the hell is Sony suppose to do when CONSUMERS overwhelmingly went digital in the last few years?
Here are the numbers:
85% of PlayStation games sold in FY2025 Q4 were digital
Physical copies made up only 15% of total full game sales
The yearly digital average reached 78%, up from 2024
You really expect Sony to see that reality of the situation and ignore it? LOL c'mon, man.
The majority of consumers made their choice. And Sony is merely catering to that majority.

u/Proof_Car5968 Jul 01 '26
I mean just having your opinion gets you debased as a sheep? So no one is allowed to disagree with you guys. I don't believe I agree but not allowing people to disagree with you is just loser behavior

u/solo13508 Jul 01 '26
I have a digital PS5 myself but I think it's pretty clear to see that this reduction of consumer choice is not going anywhere good. No one should be defending this.
2
u/Almightyderek Jul 01 '26
Anyone who posts that meme is immediately worse than anyone they are criticizing. That said, I'm sad to see physical disc's go away but it's not really surprising.
4
u/Ture-Skrotnisse Jul 01 '26
It's disgusting to see people defend anti-consumerism.
2
u/Ren66 Jul 01 '26
True, sadly been seeing it for 20 years though and watching it gradually increase and worsen year after year made today not a surprise.
3
u/Ture-Skrotnisse Jul 01 '26
I see many people bringing up PC as an example and they seem to forget that PC is an open platform, if a game is removed I can find it sailing the seas with no issue. Good luck finding Wolverine if it's gone from PS5.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Ren66 Jul 01 '26
Yup exactly. Any old or dead game from official platforms is out there on the high seas somewhere and if it's not it's only a matter of when.

This means that I can't access games that are banned(or censored) in germany anymore.
I used to order games like dead rising and dying light from austria because they weren't accessible in Germany
This is a bigger issue than just licenses and ownership
