This massive layoff has led to Fortnite being more and more buggy as time goes on. Emotes are currently not working correctly

And they've also been heavily using ai for development, entire assets created with it just showing up for people to pay for.

Layoff 1,000 employees, replace artists and some development with AI, reduce the value of both their Fortnite Subscription and of the individual battle passes by taking away some benefits/rewards, decrease the amount of v-bucks you get with a purchase
not even mentioning recent controversies around adding certain celebs/influencers/IP to Fortnite..
a lot of it relates to EPIC's own games and engine rather than the storefront so it's easy enough to ignore if you're not into Fortnite/Rocket League/Unreal
Edit: just want to add that EPIC also keeps shutting down Fortnite gamemodes, and CEO Tim Sweeney is against AI disclosure (specifically going against Steam's stance on it)
19
u/21Black_Mamba21 Jul 02 '26
Let’s not forget the CEO’s constant attempts to pick a fight with Gabe and Valve both online and in the legal space.
10
u/CrazyPenguinHUN Jul 02 '26
And apparently false advertising as well. Some guy posted that they still advertise 1000 V-bucks with their Fortnite subscription in every piece of marketing material even though it was reduced to 800 a month or so ago.

Pirating a game won't give you a physical copy.
ETA: To those of you saying you can, what's stopping you from doing that with a digital copy?
46
79
11
18
u/IronWhitin Jul 02 '26
Yes because you can burn It on a phisical media, and Is gonna work forever, because the crack Is inside whit the data.
6
u/Haunting-Sport3701 Jul 02 '26
Exactly, it will not inly let you own it, it will let you own infinite versions concurrently. When I want to let my siblings play my old games I can just put them on a hard drive and copy paste.
7
8
6
u/Artemis_Platinum Jul 02 '26
The point of a physical copy is that it can't be taken away from you.
A pirated game also cant be taken away from you.
This is ignoring the existence of flash carts.
3
u/ComesInAnOldBox Jul 02 '26
Physical games can't be taken away from you as long as your console is never connected to the internet. They absolutely can prevent your physical copy from playing, especially with online services being needed even for physical copies.
4
u/Artemis_Platinum Jul 02 '26
For strictly online games? Yeah, probably.
For other games, they can try. The moment they do, all bets are off.
4
u/Omegaprime02 Jul 02 '26
I have before. I own Witcher 2 legitimately on Steam, but the official version uses SecuROM. The pirate version I ACTUALLY use has that ripped out and has a 30% performance uplift, which on the computer I played W2 on meant I actually got to 30fps. I have a copy burnt onto a DVD-R somewhere in my collection.

u/Moneypouch Jul 02 '26
ETA: To those of you saying you can, what's stopping you from doing that with a digital copy?
Digital copies come with some sort of DRM in almost all cases. The same mechanics that can remove the digital copy from your library will also render your burnt digital copy useless. However a pirated copy will still function perfectly (if you burn it to a disc or not)
Also what does ETA mean here exactly?

Sweeney wants a big centralised gaming monopoly sooooo bad. He is salivating after steam and Roblox for years now, Fortnite and UE is not enough for him.
16
u/Albus_Lupus Jul 02 '26
Well to be fair Fortnite and UE have been dragging the shitshow that is Epic Store for years. Thats what allows him to throw so many exclusivity deals. If either were to fall, it would pretty much be the end.
Looks like more devs(at least the smaller studios, I dunno about AAA) are moving away from unreal. And I think less people are also playing fortnite. It used to be so loud, you couldnt go a week without hearing about that game - now though? Pretty quiet.
So I feel like he wants more while his ,,empire" slowly crumbles. Although of course I dont think its just gonna disappear overnight.

Nintendo is fine, they're the last ones who still care about physical media to the biggest extent. Though the truly best distributor really might just be GOG.
61
u/PowerPlaidPlays Jul 02 '26
While proper physical is always better, Game Card Keys and the newer "virtual game card" sharing features for family plan systems show they at least somewhat care about allowing people to have some of the benefits of physical games.
If Game Keys allowed you to load the files on your own S2 instead of relying on the eShop, it would be just as good as a physical game. Nintendo also still allows you to re-download Wii digital purchases 20 years later, same for 3DS and Wii U.
→ More replies (4)20
u/Cephalopirate Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
Yeah I just skip all the game key card games. It’s not a matter of convenience for me, I’m just only interested in having the games in my house.
15
u/PowerPlaidPlays Jul 02 '26
At least Nintendo makes it very obvious when it is a game key so you can make an informed purchase. There are a lot of disc based releases that only have part of the game on it, and it's not very clear that is the fact aside from some small text saying an internet connection is needed. Also my launch copy of Cyberpunk on PS4 is broken to the point of being unplayable without updates.
imo the ship has long sailed on "the full game is on the media" with how commonplace updates have been, and Nintendo so far as a good track record for keeping digital files available, so I personally just think "it's better than a code in a box" since I can still get used Game Key copies or share it with friends.
I like physical games, I have over 1000, but there are usually other ways to get games after a system's end of life if my existing local copies of the files are inaccessible. At this point I feel like better laws over digital purchases would be more productive, instead of clinging to first sale doctrine.
18
u/M4rshmall0wMan Jul 02 '26
I worry Nintendo will get priced out of physical media. The cartridges use the same NAND flash as an SSD. There could come a point where a 64GB SD costs almost as much as the game itself and Nintendo throws the towel.

That’s what people don’t get. “Digital games can revoke your license for no reason!”
When? How? Why is that even a concern? I can count on one hand the number of times this has happened to me, in my entire history of gaming. Why are people so paranoid about it?
You know what no one ever mentions? That it’s far more likely a physical disc will get broken or damaged, forcing you to purchase a new one, than it is for game devs to just up and randomly decide to revoke your license for a game.

u/DereThuglife Jul 02 '26
If you buy a game on steam and it is taken from the steam store it stays in your library forever. You can redownload and still play if its gone from the store.
If you want full ownership without DRM you buy GoG but both option are far better than the console stores.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Odd-Tart-5613 Jul 02 '26
thats what they do currently yes, but the point is that is a choice not a requirement. They are legally able to delete and unistall your entire library if they so choose. (with developer permission) and Sony has just proved that companies will do that if they want to. So even if I dont expect steam to do that it makes me antsy about digital media.
29
u/AttakZak Jul 02 '26
Xbox could stub their toe and get dogged by the world, but PlayStation usually is adored. To see PlayStation this hated right now is a huge sign something is wrong.

Sony got reasonable excuses for that, it's shitty and people should be worried and criticizing it but there is some justifications for that. Something I don't get. People are angry at Sony for cancelling physical media, but Valve are pretty much all about digital downloads and most of the time I see folks praise what the Steam store has become.

Approximately 85% of full-game software sales on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are digital, according to Sony's corporate financial disclosures.
11
u/00Teonis Jul 01 '26
A number that does not account for resales
11
→ More replies (1)16
u/Aeviu Jul 01 '26
Sony doesn't care.
Whilst a single disc might get shared, used-game resales generate zero revenue for developers, making that secondary market financially irrelevant to Sony's ecosystem.
Sony’s corporate disclosures prove that digital add-ons, DLC, and network subscriptions drive the overwhelming majority of PlayStation's actual software profits.
At the end of the day, Sony will continue to rake in billions because the platform simply does not need resales to thrive.

u/RandoFollower Jul 02 '26
Honestly, if you can’t have a physical disc that cannot be fucked with, then I don’t think piracy is stealing
5
u/razama Jul 02 '26
What infuriates me the most is the ignorance of people who think this doesn't affect them because they are already digital with most of their purchases.
Do you guys honestly think your prices on STEAM and the PS store aren't going to raise even higher? Do you think Rockstar didn't already know about this months ago and decided to price their games accordingly?
5
u/No_Intention_8079 Jul 02 '26
I mean, I already ain’t buying games over 30 bucks on steam. It’s not hard to get stuff on a budget. The loss of physical media isn’t about price, it’s about owning your own shit.
2
u/NerveInteresting4549 Jul 02 '26
There is a price aspect to it… theres no second hand games… which helped regulate prices… and not having physical media means there’s no need to lower prices to clear out older stock… now ya gotta hope there’s a discount eventually given digitally but there’s no guarantee of discounts
5
u/Pinku_Dva Jul 02 '26
