no, i think it's just that the first act itself can be the length of a typical game (40h isn't unreasonable) and is, by itself, so fleshed out and dynamic that it's almost like replaying a game unto itself
plus replaying a shorter segment vs. the entire game makes it easier to try new classes or builds
Just bought it late last week. About halfway through the first act and this game fucks!! Running a Halfling Cleric and it's so fun. I waited way too long to get into this game.
I may have a different opinion than others when it comes to this, but in my view, the game is just too long. Its an incredibly well-made game, but I've had difficulty finishing and restarting it due to its length. Many people out there probably love the game because of its length, but I am someone who enjoys shorter games that focus on replayability than long games you usually only play once.
I replay games a lot in my life, and I have played BG3 five times now. This is basically how it's gone for me:
Two times, I managed to get about halfway through Act 3, but I just get so bored by then and all of my character's kits are overloaded and bloated. I have like 15 pages of spells, scrolls, actions, etc to scroll through in every move. So i eventually dropped them.
Two times, I got super excited to play again, but after finishing Act 1 (which takes about 20 hours), I just kind of gave up as I looked ahead and realized I had like another 40 hours to go through. So I dropped it.
One time, I convinced myself that it would be so fun to start all over again with a new team with new builds, but once I got to the grove at the very beginning of the game, I just say meh, "i've done this numerous times now. I just don't really care for this story. I just want to battle and level up, and that's it". So I dropped it lol
Overall, in games like this, I truly do not care about the grand story, I just enjoy focusing on team compositions and leveling up characters. I love the battles and leveling up, but everything else feels like a slog.
My DREAM is to be able to play the mod "Trials of Tav" where it eliminates the story and is just like a dungeon mode of battle-level up-battle-level up-battle-etc. but unfortunately, I can't access that mod on console :(
For me the story is a huge part of it, I wish it was longer. But I was a big fan of choose your own adventure books when I was little so I love being so apart of the story that it completely changes the outcome of everything in it
You should go a Dark Urge run with mods. Inifinite gold and inventory space. Kill the characters who you don't like. Focus on your team of 4 and just murder your way through the game. Plenty of combat and levelling up without the standard story and inventory management.
I've done that already. Made a bunch of my own characters from Withers too. My brain gets satisfaction from team building and leveling up that team, not a story I personally couldn't give two shits about, so that's why my dream is for the game to have an official dungeon mode where its just battling and leveling up. I will always be sad that I can't play the Trials of Tav mod on console.
I think it depends how you play. A lot of people are wary of the third act. It was my favorite. But maybe because I played the first act so many times before rerolling my character lol
But to be fair I focused on the main quest and quests K stumbled upon organically, but I can understand being overwhelmed in the last act if you're exploring every nook and cranny. I was kind of already overwhelmed in the first act, that's why I decided to play the way I did, and I had a blast, even if I may have missed a lot of stuff.
It doesnt drop in quality. But theres something so uniquely fresh and new about Act 1 that makes it endearing and attractive. The starts of your adventure, your new Tav, meeting everyone for the first time. Its like instant nostalgia. By the time you get to Act 3 specifically Lower City your party and relationships could be very well established, having been through A LOT already. Plus the sheer size and scope of Act 3 feels daunting. Like youve just conquered some big shit and theres just MORE. more of everything. Ive completed two play throughs playing it mostly safe and re-played Act 1-2 for funsie the most. Act 3 is amazing! But its where I feel the game could go from fun to potentially overwhelming for some folks. Just my 2 cents btw! Others probably feel different.
Yes, it absolutely falls is quality after act 1. Act 2 is poorly composed and act 3 is actively bad. The devs have just hired astroturfers and there is a dedicated group that blatantly lies about the game constantly. Don't listen to the astroturf lies about this game, it is still an unfinished and broken mess.

I played Divinity OS and I genuinely could believe this, as it certainly feels like that. But I'm not ready to claim it as a fact yet, when, as the other commentors have replied, it could very well just be the subjective opinions lf dumbass redditors.
Reddit is the most easily influenced gaming community too because its all performative bullshit over here, and if I was a developer trying to blow up I would 100% get a few articles manufactured about how much more "intelligent" you are than the average gamer for enjoying my untested and clunky ass RPG, and then let redditors do the rest. "This game won't be popular with gamers who have short attention spans, but anyone willing to look beneath the surface will find the most engaging experience in recent years". Thats me paraphrasing the exact type of bullshit I see written everytime I know a developer is trying to win the reddit crowd.
Alright now, this is getting a bit extreme here. People having different opinions than you doesn't make them "hired astroturfers". I have plenty of critiques for the game, and I wrote a different comment saying the reasons why I struggle with the game, but your comment just sounds like insane, terminally online nonsense.
While quality is a subjective thing, I don't see how many people who've actually played the game believe this.
Yes, Act 1 is extremely well developed, more so than the other two acts probably.
But, Act 2 is still very, very good and has some of the best boss fights.
Act 3 is huge and sprawling. There are a ton of side quests and other random things to do. It is way more open ended than Act 1 or 2. Aside from the end goal of completing the game, you can approach Act 3 in a ton of different ways, quest orders, etc.
I guess I can agree that the quality "falls off" in Act 2 and 3, but only because the bar is so high for Act 1. To say that Act 3 is bad is not really a fair assessment of the game.
