Black and White: Definitive Edition or something like that would be great

u/kittehs4life Jul 29 '26

Such a great game!! I think dropping villagers into volcanoes may be frowned upon these days, hopefully not

23

u/ToiletWarlord Jul 29 '26

I taught my giant tiger avatar to poop on one particular villager’s house.

And to throw pigs into ocean.

3

u/ActurusMajoris Jul 29 '26

Sintopia might scratch that itch for you.

Edit: seems it’s 20% off until August 10 as well. Can recommend.

2

u/originaljahrootz 29d ago

Thanks for this nugget

4

u/xAxTragicxEndx Jul 29 '26

Frown all they want. I am God...

At least in that game. Lol. It was a true gem of a game.

7

u/that_one_guy567 Jul 29 '26

I thought this was about Pokemon and got very confused

3

u/wierdwhatstuff Jul 29 '26

Especially that one dude that couldn't die, and just be flung across the map in slow motion ALL DAMN DAY

4

u/n0val33t Jul 29 '26

nope, guy wit the IP is a dick

5

u/Strange-Order-6550 Jul 29 '26

Do you mean the split IP of Microsoft and EA? Or are you talking about Molyneux?

2

u/avdpos Jul 29 '26

The first split is the real problem. The second is just a dick

5

u/LzrdKng2112 Jul 29 '26

How is molyneux a dick?

2

u/Witness_me_Karsa Jul 29 '26

People get salty because he makes big promises and can't always deliver. People let themselves build things up too much ahead of game releases.

2

u/Turbo_Fresh Jul 30 '26

So e of my colleagues have worked with him and they say he is a dick. He thinks he's better than everyone, he expects engineers to work unhealthy hours etc. Ironically he has a god complex.

2

u/CatONineFails Jul 29 '26

I used to love sending flocks of birds for villages to gork at then hurling fireballs at them so they would see them all coming

1

u/Turbo_Fresh Jul 30 '26

"Now, for my next trick..."

1

u/Azorsa Jul 29 '26

Literally no one would frown upon this lmao

1

u/Victal87 Jul 31 '26

It was the sound of their screams that gave me the greatest of joy

47

u/fluffybottompanda Jul 29 '26

I thought you meant pokemon and so the comments to your comment reaaaalllllly confused me hahahaha

3

u/Adanta47 Jul 29 '26

Nah, give me Black 3 and White 3

2

u/TiltZa Jul 29 '26

I was also trying to figure this out 🤣

39

u/TrampledMage Jul 29 '26

I miss my adorable holy cow that served the most evil god around. Although, my zebra was a hell of a fighter. I got him trained well enough I could let him be and he would wreck the enemy creature.

I really miss that game.

10

u/yeowstinson Jul 29 '26

That was Black and White 2 and Black and White 2: Battle of the gods!

3

u/TrampledMage Jul 29 '26

Oh you’re right! I forgot the zebra wasn’t in the first one.

1

u/yeowstinson Jul 30 '26

There was a zebra?

2

u/TrampledMage Jul 30 '26

Yes. And I realize it wasn’t in B&W2, it was an unlockable creature after doing a puzzle on land 2 in the original game.

1

u/yeowstinson Jul 30 '26

I had no idea TIL!

2

u/TrampledMage Jul 30 '26

I think there was something like 20 creatures. Cow, lion, tiger, wolf, chimpanzee, gorilla, ogre, zebra, and brown bear, polar bear, tortoise, sheep, crocodile, and rhinoceros are what I remember.

9

u/PaleontologistOk7359 Jul 29 '26

My monkey developed autism and started compulsively collecting stones and his own feces.

10/10, formative gaming experience.

11

u/MonsieurDrole Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

Does gameplay even need change? From what I remember it could work just as well today.

8

u/Bigr789 Jul 29 '26

I recently got it working on my PC and it plays better than a lot of modern games tbh

2

u/Desperate-Cost6827 Jul 29 '26

Share us your wisdom! I was putting stuff away in storage and B&W II was sitting on the top of a box of movies I've been meaning to bring back upstairs.

It would be so nice if I could get it to run.

3

u/Bigr789 Jul 29 '26

I will copy everything I followed. I know it looks like a lot but it was relatively simple "myabandonware" is a safe site. But I understand if you want to check it's security on your own just as I did.

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/black-white-2-bem#download

Running this in 2023: 1. Download ISO Version Deviance Release 2. Download Patch v1.1 - v1.2 - v1.42 NOTE: v1.42 is a fan made patch that makes the game compatible with modern systems. 5. Mount ISO and run arun.exe, then click install. IMPORTANT: When mounting the ISO, do NOT use windows built-in mounting. I know it sounds stupid as hell, but use a program like WinCDEmu. (It's super easy to use, just google it, or use some other program) If you don't, the installer WON'T install the fourth level properly and you will crash after finishing the third level every time! 6. Use any of the provided serial keys when installing:

DXFP-JD46-7GJY-Z8MN-WDEV 4UXX-7Z1J-W30X-ZRM5-8DEV HPEW-VRQA-REWE-U18G-MDEV 1UC4-ZG7S-PORN-VSON-KING

NOTE: When it asks to register with EA arts account just click "register later".

  1. Install all of the patches in order v1.1 - v1.2 - v1.42
  2. PLAY THE GAME! Run white.exe or use the desktop shortcut. IMPORTANT: Do NOT use any cracked version white.exe and do not overwrite anything. There are anti piracy measures for this game which purposefully add bugs and glitches to the game (Most notorious being the villagers not aging and growing up). Using the fan patch v1.42 is all you need.

NOTE: Even with all the patches there may be still issues with running the game on a modern PC.

A.) You may get issues with overlapping audio due to too high frame rate. To fix I had to limit my games FPS to 60. 1. Right-click on your desktop 2. NVIDIA Control Panel 3. Manage 3D settings 4. Program Settings 5. From the drop down find and select "Black And White 2 (white.exe)" 6. From the settings list, scroll down a bit and find "Max Frame Rate" and set it to 60

B.) You may get issues with being unable to move the mouse properly due to too high polling rate on your mouse (razer, logitech etc mouse for example) To fix I had to reduce my mouses polling rate: 1. Check your polling rate here: https://cps-check.com/polling-rate-check Click begin and move your mouse around. If the max it shows is anything above 125Hz (e.g. 500Hz or 1000Hz), you'll have to lower yours to 125Hz. You really only have 2 options: Option 1: Google your mouse model and check if there is software made by your mouse manufacturer you can download. Usually there will be an option for setting the "Report/Polling rate" manually. Option 2: You could buy/find a cheap, old crappy mouse that has a low polling rate of 125Hz or less

Option 1 worked for me since I'm using a Logitech G102 which comes with software you can just download online.

C.) You may get issues with the game crashing after finishing the final task of any level. Luckily the fan made patch v1.42 includes an option to skip the level to level transition sequence. Just press esc, and it will give you the option to skip.

For more see page 6 on this forum post:

https://forum.bwgame.net/threads/running-black-white-2-on-windows-10.7917/post-56669

Anyway, that's all I got, good luck! What a MASSIVE hassle to run, but it's a great game and I wish it had a proper GOG or Steam version release that you could just BUY and PLAY without all of these dumb issues!

u/OK_Computer-3684 Jul 29 '26

Thanks, I am giving this a shot. I played b&w ! for several hours, but didnt figure out how to do anything cool.

1

u/AncientWonder54 Jul 30 '26

Did it work?

1

u/OK_Computer-3684 Jul 30 '26

Haven't done it yet. I will let you know.

3

u/MRDellanotte Jul 30 '26

THANK YOU FOR SHARING! I’ve been wanting to play this game again for some time.

2

u/Bigr789 Jul 30 '26

Happy to help! I have windows 10 so I'm not sure how stable it is with windows 11 if you are on that OS. Best of luck!

3

u/KarmaAdjuster Jul 29 '26

The AI doesn't need to change, but actually making the creatures able to learn more things could be cool. In reality, there is a pretty constrained set of things the creatures could learn, but because that learning is obscured from the player (unlike in B&W2, the player base attributed all sorts of learned behaviors to the creatures due to confirmation bias. I'm not suggesting trying to eliminate that confirmation bias, but instead give it more ammunition based on what previous players though, and see what else players will imagine.

3

u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 29 '26

I can confirm that 'dont eat people' is not something the AI can learn. I tried. You just have to keep them fed and hope for the best.

2

u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 29 '26

It can be problematic on wide monitors, and Windows 11 tends to really hate it.

8

u/Honest_Box_6037 Jul 29 '26

ooooooooooh

we got a notion
that we'd like to sail the ocean....

3

u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 29 '26

core memory unlocked

5

u/IHKAS1984 Jul 29 '26

The B&W games are up there with Shadow of the Colossus: amazing concept and execution that absolutely no one has made a credible attempt at replicating.

4

u/TechnicianGreedy7998 Jul 29 '26

Lionhead studios was on fire in the early 2000's. Fable might still be top 3 RPGs of all time.

3

u/xrayspex73 Jul 29 '26

How about a new version of The Movies....

1

u/Narrow-Following-870 Jul 29 '26

I liked The Movies, but the one that wakes up my nostalgia is Hollywood, if anyone remembers that

4

u/PaulVla Jul 29 '26

Well it warms my heart that this is so far up the list!

3

u/Euna_Chris Jul 29 '26

You walk with rock now

3

u/Microwavegerbil Jul 29 '26

Not the first game I thought of, but yeah this would be amazing.

2

u/FurieMan Jul 29 '26

Controversial take. Black and white was so cool and innovative due to its cool learning AI. I think with today's technology that this could be an insanely cool game. But it would be an "AI" game.

2

u/Oreckz Jul 29 '26

Most if not all games feature AI in some capacity.

Today’s Generative AI doesn’t encompass the entire field as much as Sam Altman wants everyone to think it does.

1

u/ravenisblack Jul 29 '26

Yeah... The term AI already being used in tech everywhere really played into their hand when everyone started saying AI when they meant Generative AI.

2

u/generic_canadian_dad Jul 29 '26

I'll never forget watching my parents friends teen son play B&W on the 2k new years eve. I was 9 turning 10 in January and I was blown away watching him kill peasants lol.

2

u/Hoskuld Jul 29 '26

I had the opposite problem. Damn monkey watched me set up a breeder, then while I was busy with a long quest, caused a population explosion and following famine

1

u/GhostInTheTeahouse Jul 29 '26

There’s a game currently in Early Access called ‘Masters of Albion’. That might be what you’re looking for.

1

u/SadSpaghettiSauce Jul 29 '26

The reviews suggest otherwise…

2

u/GhostInTheTeahouse Jul 29 '26

It's in Early Access and hasn't been out for very long, so it could very well turn things around, especially considering it's by Peter Molyneux.
The latest reviews seem to be getting better again, too.
Early Access games are always a bit of a gamble.

2

u/SadSpaghettiSauce Jul 29 '26

Yeah, I get that it is Early Access. My biggest takeaway from the reading several reviews is that the game is struggling to decide what exactly it wants to be.

3

u/EnTyme53 Jul 29 '26

it's by Peter Molyneux

the game is struggling to decide what exactly it wants to be.

Checks out

2

u/GhostInTheTeahouse Jul 29 '26

Yeah, that's kind of how it looks to me, too. That's why I've just added it to my watchlist for now and am waiting to see which direction it goes.

I suggested the game mainly because I think anyone who enjoyed Black & White should at least keep an eye on it for now.

1

u/roboticLiquidscent Jul 29 '26

Yes 🙌 I was coming in here to write it. I recently replayed it. People still make patches, mods and new maps for it!

1

u/greystrider Jul 29 '26

I'm glad someone said it! I loved that game. And even the crappy graphics had a certain charm to it. It felt like it's own mythos. And I remember the cover of the cd case looking sick.

1

u/Radabard Jul 29 '26

Yes!!! I loved those games!

1

u/Gakoknight Jul 29 '26

Oh fuck yes. What a great game.

1

u/kylel999 Jul 29 '26

Holy shit what are the chances that this was the first thought I had too. I always thought the Black and White series could've translated to VR beautifully

1

u/uberrob Jul 29 '26

Thrilled this is the top comment.

1

u/jfhutchi Jul 29 '26

Take all my upvotes

1

u/jfhutchi Jul 29 '26

Anyone else have a name that was on the list of whispered names and freak the fuck out in the middle of the night

1

u/WillyGivens Jul 29 '26

Was my immediate first thought. Imagine your creature with beefed up ai. VR and using miracle hand gestures.

1

u/medicaustik Jul 29 '26

Your worshippers MUST have food.

1

u/Poonce Jul 29 '26

Came here to say this and it was right at the top.

1

u/LostW0lf Jul 29 '26

How about Black & White: VR Hands of a god?

1

u/RugbyRaggs Jul 29 '26

Yes, but with VR support.

1

u/avdpos Jul 29 '26

The only game that would make me think about 3d gaming

1

u/ErrythingAllAtOnce Jul 29 '26

My first thought too. Despite the over-hype of what the game would be, there was serious potential in what we got.

1

u/AdEqual5606 Jul 29 '26

I built a. Old PC literally just to play this game haha

1

u/PvtBob1 Jul 29 '26

Took the words right out of my mouth

1

u/pv505 Jul 29 '26

Dude yes!!!! 🤙🏿💪🏿

1

u/ResponsibleAd3191 Jul 29 '26

My friend worked in the second one when he was a student. Always loved that game!

1

u/scorpiomilo1 Jul 29 '26

Oh how I want this

1

u/dasmaxdas Jul 29 '26

Came to say exactly that

1

u/DaBoydster Jul 29 '26

lol I dont remember anything from the game but being evil and throwing and eating people

1

u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 29 '26

I want this game with ZERO changes - just make it run properly on wide monitors and Windows 11.

It was 'low grade' FX when it was launched because that was the aesthetic they wanted. The villagers looked unrendered because the designers wanted the player to not see them clearly as people - a foundational design element for the game. They wanted you to see your animal emissary clear and vivid, but to see everyone else minimal and blurry, so when your animal would stupidly pick up one and eat them, you would admonish your animal for being naughty, but you wouldnt be angry or sad that a person just got ate by them.

1

u/Muavius Jul 29 '26

Such an awesome game, would be a great remaster!

1

u/poopsiepiee Jul 29 '26

I have it on my Pc it runs like booty, but it’s still fun. Omg good one

1

u/Desperate-Cost6827 Jul 29 '26

I came here to say Black and White and absolute did not expect the first comment to say the same thing.

That was such a great game.

1

u/Mindless_Jello_3131 Jul 29 '26

This would go so hard rn on switch 2 mouse mode. I looooved B&W on our ancient PC

1

u/MaterialSign1347 Jul 29 '26

My wife really wants to play this game again on PC. Would love to find a way to download it.

1

u/Massive_Pitch3333 Jul 29 '26

Or those greedy bastards could just release the original!!

1

u/MyriamTW Jul 29 '26

That was my first and only thought.

1

u/MayorsAnts Jul 29 '26

I have a copy, but can't find my cd key. Both for the game and the expansion. :(

1

u/Legoslol Jul 29 '26

Is this game physical only? I’ve searched for digital versions a few times and couldn’t find it.

1

u/Suicyder Jul 29 '26

Such a underrated game. Especially the first one. I'd absolutely instabuy a remake.

1

u/medium_dumb Jul 29 '26

Good choice

1

u/DetectiveSuperb9352 Jul 29 '26

Now this I agree with

1

u/Zestyclose_Wolf9147 Jul 30 '26

I love that game so damn much

1

u/YardapeII Jul 30 '26

Dude a VR version would be amazing

1

u/Rabbid7273 Jul 30 '26

Surprise of my life when i found out that one of my favourite games of all time was developed where my parents would go clothes shopping lol. No man's sky too.

1

u/Left_my_Drink Jul 30 '26

My man... You just became my favorite reddit poster with that post

1

u/Suyeta_Rose Jul 30 '26

OMG Yes! I would kill for an updated version of that game. I wonder if I can get my old copy to run on an emulator. I wanna slap my tiger for eating the worshippers. hehehe

1

u/Lumpy-Yam-4584 Jul 30 '26

Don't give Peter Molyneux any ideas. I am wary enough of the Fable 1 - Remake already.

1

u/Comfortable_Sun_9215 Jul 31 '26

and Dungeon Keeper

1

u/nick2k23 Aug 01 '26

I was thinking about this game the other day 😀 funny that

1

u/Trash-Scientist Aug 01 '26

This and Populous: The Beginning

1

u/Fabulous-Art3250 Aug 01 '26

Yes!! Maybe a hot take, but Black and white should have been the remake, not fable

1

u/fuelstaind Aug 02 '26

I was surprised they never did a version on Xbox with the Kinect.

1

u/originaljahrootz 29d ago

I've always hoped for a modern version of this game!!

0

u/OYOGG Jul 29 '26

Goddamn Emerald, Platonium deserved to be remastered no Fckn Diamond & Pearl. Speaking of those two it allows you to go to the distortion World which only POKEMON PLATINUM can go into... HERESY!!!
