Legit where I learned to parry in ds1
60
u/RepulsiveAd6906 9d ago
Dead-ass where I did my first ever parry. Went through the entirety of DS3 + Dlc, and the whole run of DS1. With DS1 though, I ran with my friend and he told me that his opening attack can be parried. "The hell is a parry?" Well anyway that first parry awakened something in me.

u/i_bagel 9d ago
Did...did you not read the tutorial markings in the Undead Asylum?

u/RepulsiveAd6906 9d ago
Hah. "Reading." Jokes aside, when I started the game it was after work, which was when I was able to play with my friend at the time. Which was basically about midnight. So 10-1 I likely saw it, but never acknowledged it. Hell, never even saw it happen throughout my first hundred or so hours of the series. Knew about guard breaks and backstabbing, but not parries.
→ More replies (2)2
u/That_boi_Jerry 9d ago
You can do a similar parry against Pontiff Sulyvahn in DS3
→ More replies (1)5
u/godotace 9d ago
I used the “tank everything with a greatshield and chip away damage when there’s an opening” tactic for every single boss in the game until Gwyn. Actually had to learn how to dodge on the final boss lol
3
u/JuicyMellonMan5 9d ago
I’ve always seen people say he’s too easy and not a very good fight because you can repost him to death, but being able to parry has always made him more fun to me. It’s the same with Gundyr in DS3
→ More replies (1)2
u/BLZGK3 4d ago
Yeah, same Lmao.
I'm able to beat him now without parrying, but back when I first played the game and encountered him, he folded my ass for nearly an entire week until, out of curiosity, I tried to parry him, and was successful the first attempt. Admittedly, it was a fluke because afterwards, he folded my asses many more times lol. I eventually got the timing down well enough to outlast him, not entirely perfect, during the first time I beat him. Felt kinda guilty that I sort of cheesed him when it was all said and done though...

u/ArchmageAstra3 9d ago
Or run away and throw dark fireballs like a coward. (That was how I beat him my first time)
14

u/PaladinCorbin 10d ago
And a special mention to Soul of Cinder from Dark Souls III when he enters his second phase and his epic choir theme slowly fades away into Gwyn's theme again.
12
7
u/Kumorrii 9d ago
My mind was blown when I realized I was fighting Gwyn again, what a way to end the trilogy.
9
u/PaladinCorbin 9d ago
I honestly think Soul of Cinder is a fantastic final boss. He uses different move sets and spells that are available to the player, representing all the people who have linked the fire over until ages, but as you finally beat them, it reverts to its original form, the first being to ever link the flame, and starts playing the original theme song.
Genuinely cooked with that one. I died against the boss the first time because I was too busy focusing on the change in soundtrack and I didn't dodge the explosion grab.

Ya played through 3 whole games as a "skilled soldier" but otherwise normal dude fighting all manner of crazy characters with crazy powers, fighting tanks and fighter jets and freakin anime mechs on foot with nothing but a rocket launcher.
Then you get to The Boss. The muthaf***in Boss.
Another "skilled soldier".
And now you know how those poor super soldiers felt when they had to go up against you.
23
u/Confident-Disaster96 10d ago
You play 3 different charakters in those 3 games my friend.
MGS1 -> "Solid Snake" (Clone of Big Boss) MGS2 -> "Raiden", and Solid Snake abit MGS3 -> "Naked Snake" later called Big Boss after beating his Me tor and Motherfgure "The Boss"
50
u/Simansis26 10d ago
His point still stands. You do play as a "skilled soldier" in all three games. They just aren't all the same guy all of the time.
14
u/Pension_Pale 10d ago
I still agree with him since every single one of those are still just "skilled soldier" with no superpowers or anything, but... it's kind of funny to think that of all the Metal Gear Solid games, you spend way more time playing other people than you do actual Solid Snake.

Were her side boobs being exposed necessary for the plot?
33
u/FFKonoko 9d ago
Yes actually. Sort of. She unzipped specifically to show off the snake like scar on her body, while giving a history lesson. She is zipped up for most of the game. She really should have zipped back up for the fight.
Arguably she doesn't, to give you a better chance to beat her. For plot reasons. But also, it's kojima.

u/pablo_montoya 9d ago
The amount of skin showing on a Kojima character's body is directly proportional to their power level

I imagine youre talking about the original Dragons dogma dark arisen, its a endearing flawed game, but the gameplay is quite unique, i recommend you dont take the story seriously, its kinda funny at its best but mostly predictable and boring, until the latter half, which i wont spoil. Despite all that its my one of my all time favorites
If youre talking about the second one...its basically the same thing with better graphics and a different setting some things are better and some are worse, which is it goes from person to person, the latter half gets better if you played the first one tho

Definitely the Volo theme from Legends Arceus. I love that it is a reprise of Cynthia's theme. Plus, for a Pokemon game, it was actually a fairly challenging battle.

u/Evalover42 10d ago
Volo and Cynthia both.
6

As a D&D DM I was initially confused by the beginning of your comment mentioning Volo (and I thought Volothamp Geddarm) lol.

Gehrman, the First Hunter from Bloodborne, such an impactful fight thematically and the music is incredible
11
u/mattchamp98 9d ago
Its a shame that the dlc completely ruins his fight as you become way too over leveled for him
6
u/Hunterstorys 9d ago
Shouldn't the dlc be played after the main game?
9
u/Centipede_Summoner 9d ago
the game goes straight into new game plus after you defeat gehrman, so you have to do the dlc beforehand or wait until you unlock it in the next new game cycle
7
u/Character-Survey8917 9d ago
If you have consumed enough umbilical cords then you can fight the real final boss (Moon Presence), that if you die against you can then go back to do the dlc after killing Gehrman (though technically Gehrman wouldn’t be the final boss in that instance, regardless of whether Gehrman or The Moon Presence is your final boss the game ends when you beat them)

As someone who grew up with Gen 4 I had ptsd of Cynthia's theme. It was vindicating how his team resembled hers and on the brink of victory I recognised his theme. I wished all polemon games showed the level of challenge this battle had, the last time I felt so motivated was against Wally in ORAS. Now thats a theme to fight too

He is NOT the only Pokemon Trainer with 7 Pokemon. Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness has one as well(the final boss fight has 7, 4 of which are Legendaries).
He IS the only one with 8 total Pokemon Health Pools, but he's not the only one with 7 Pokemon.

11
u/Similar-Language-180 9d ago
SoC is an amalgamation of all Lords including Gwyn, that's why you see his combat style in phase 2 and hear parts of his theme throughout the SoC theme but SoC isn't a god, more like a husk containing the souls made from the remains of those who sacrificed themselves for the flame

Simon 2, half-health version had minor changes to his attacks, but felt like a relentless monster. I hate that I loved fighting him.

u/darthphallic 9d ago
I don’t know if he counts as a god (even though he can change / erase the world at his whim) but Renoir from Expedition 33. The first time his boss fight kicked off it was like that scene from Ratattoie where the critic suddenly remembers his youth, because I hadn’t been that floored by a boss theme since one winged Angel.

I’m willing to bet some people are thinking Cynthia from Pokémon. While I never thought she was tough (I used to defeat her for fun as a kid), she’s the golden standard of Elite Four Champions to the Pokémon community.
14
u/xx_Chl_Chl_xx 10d ago
She’s one of the only trainers that fights like the player: a mixed team that’s able to counter the opponent’s team. Another notable example is Red in Gold & Silver, who was literally the player character in the previous game
Any boss that fights like the player is a force to be reckoned with

I mean, Gwyn from Dark Souls 1 with his plin plin plon comes to mind. He's relatively normal sized. Still a giant compared to the player, but everything is pretty much.
In Gwyn's case, he's just a frightened, burnt out husk of a man, desperately clinging onto the past, to a legacy destined to fade away, to a light in the dark.

Even better when the final theme has the same motif as the theme song, if not the same exact song.
Oh and bonus points if the final level is named after the game too
