The state of modern gaming everything in general

So much of the average person's discourse and interactions shifting to online spaces has been a huge negative for our culture

94

u/Emmix_x0x 3d ago

THHIIIISSSS everything someone do is cringe. U like something specific? U r nerd or weirdo or childish. Wheres people u collected cool unique stuff? Dressed differently or wear their hair some awesome way? Had some odd hobby?

Everything seems so black and white in ideology, its suffocating

37

u/ImpressiveAmount4684 3d ago

People in general are increasingly miserable. They feel great joining a community of miserable people, whatever they are crying about.

misery loves company

21

u/KayleeKutie 3d ago

I feel like people haven't changed too much, it's just that social media naturally promotes very extreme opinions on things (which usually end up being negative). Most people have lukewarm takes on things which doesn't generate as much interest/likes; this also leads people to tend towards parroting extreme opinions if they don't want to have a more nuanced take. I think it's really important to talk to people about topics IRL rather than just getting the ragebaity internet consensus.

9

u/ImpressiveAmount4684 3d ago

Oh for sure, social media is hyperengineered to amplify hate engagement.

It's because they grew up in YouTube and apps. Every thumbnail is best ever. Of all time. Worst ever nonsense. They need to be told what to think.

This. Should i play this game i bought, or spend my time watching someone else play it and tell me if it’s good or not? A question that sounds ridiculous to me, but apparently the latter option is very popular among younger generation.

Not only that, but then they’ll come here and confidently tell how the latest drop is shit and this and that is the meta and those things are shit as they are not the meta.

Oh how much better many online games would be if these droolers didn’t have these sources spelling everything out for them. I mean, it doesn’t actually seem like their strength is to dissect strategies and tactics and methodically evaluate them. Developers wouldn’t have to prioritize fixing slight imbalalances in their games, as those wouldn’t be instantly abused by majority of their player base.

3

u/Fn_Spaghetti_Monster 2d ago

I saw video just today that was about a solar molten salt power plant and it was They Cannot turn it off!! Watched a bit because, wow that seems kinda odd. Ohh so they actually can turn it off, just if they do, and they leave if off for too long, the salt cools and solidifies and it kind of fucks things up. Soo annoying.

It pisses me off so bad. You can have nuanced takes, and you'll be downvoted immediately without any comments, because they simply can't argue at all. And when they do, it always devolves into some terrible argument where they draw themselves in a corner, if they engage.

I am thinking about running a local AI model on webpages to just filter out all the terrible short takes out of existence, so I can enjoy the people having good takes and just ignore all the noise. Someone posts a short dumb answer while taking a air of superiority and boom, straight to baby jail, I'll never know you even exist. The fucking dream.

4

u/Zakkullll 2d ago

More and more im seeing any level of disagreement just become one side picking at the others post history or spelling or grammar and completely ignoring what the other person is even saying. Its pathetic lol.

I'm hypercritical, often not on the same page as the general public, and so much of games, movies, tv, entertainment in general, has become so bland and boring...

But I expect GTA 6 to be GTA 6, and I'm excited for it because GTA 5 was really good and a lot of fun, same with RDR2. No one does GTA like Rockstar, you can't get around that, and if they're the only ones giving us that universally praised standard every decade+, I'm not going to suddenly decide it's shit when they come around again with another top-tier sandbox action experience.

One thing you can always expect is for them to build upon both the tech and gameplay of each game they've done, as they always have. It isn't just rehashing, they refine the experience over and over, and usually we end up with an incredible familiar experience, while being introduced to new things that we can expect them to refine in the future.

3

u/Solidjakes 2d ago

I know I’m alone on this, but I was actually really bummed by the changes from RdR1 to RDR2. I appreciated the graphics and level of detail but rockstar didn’t realize they removed the special sauce the first game had.

PvP rolls and headshots were amazing. There was an effect or something on the headshot that was pure asmr. Also the fist fight system allowed you to get knocked out and ragdoll. This allowed me and my buddies to make a fight club on top of the mountain and knock each other off and tumble down without immediately dying.

Rd2 comes out and they removed the pvp roll and replaced it with a disgusting dive. Fist fights drained hp and didn’t give the same knock down effect. Idk some times it’s hard to tell if they actually ruined the game for me, or if I can just never get the nostalgia back that I had playing rd1 with my friends. But either way I’ll be looking for that special sauce in GTA6. I can’t put it into words but I hope it’s there.

3

u/radicalelation 2d ago

There are definitely especially engine shifts that have bugged me personally as well. I prefer the weightier driving physics of IV over the more arcade-y V, and there were some other steps back to compromise physics for more of other stuff, or even just to better optimize for console.

You might be interested to know that there was a combat roll animation left unused in RDR2, and a mod replaces the dive with it.

Yes!!! Opinions aren't real anymore, they're all forced. Theres no nuance or rational anymore. People are so stupid they actively make their own lives worse being mad at everything. "Modern FPS games suck"...you ever played Trepang2? Metro? Wolfenstein? "No"....Then STFU lol. They say games are "woke" so much, it actual ruins genuine criticism of over political games. Its like everyone is on some kind of "team". Its so bad YTers actual profit of making over critical videos. Some cool YTers i used to watch are just chuds now, but probrably not even in an honest way.

18

u/prossnip42 3d ago

I have seen people say, unironically, from this 25 minute preview that Jason was Lucia's "whipping boy" and that they made him boring on purpose for "girl power". First off, how they got that idea out of a 25 minute preview is beyond me but even within the actual preview, all the combat sections have Jason ordering Lucia around like she's a lost puppy. These people just see what they wanna see at this point

12

u/outsider1624 3d ago

I remember the hate on arthur when they announced rdr2. They all were like bring back John marsten, this new character sucks lol

Fr if you're gonna hate on GTA you can do way better than "it looks like the previous game". Gotta get a little more spicy:

This is why my default assumptions of most comments I see on the main gaming subreddits are:

  1. This person likely doesn't even play the game
  2. This person might not even play any games and exclusively experiences them through streamers
  3. If this person does play any video games they likely just pirate it despite them talking about what developers owe them.
  4. This person is likely under 20.

Oh and then you get the same people on the PC-related subreddits shitting on peoples' builds and setups from their hand-me-down 10 year old family laptop.

138

Almost like 50+ years of propaganda and psy ops from other countries and our own government to affect the mental health of the entire planet, because an apathetic / angry society is easy to control / radicalize.

83

u/HubrisOfApollo 3d ago

i miss when "woke" meant understanding this plight and not some social justice term/slur.

27

u/FloatingTacos 3d ago

Yeah, those were the days. When being woke meant you saw behind the veil of society. Now it’s just bullshit tossed around to offend people. Being woke was close to being a hippy. Now being woke is being a psychotic POS.

Companies and even individuals atp have a PROFIT INCENTIVE to trigger your emotions because of the way they make money from media. It's not even a secret at this point, this is 100% the reason and mix that with us being even more anti-social and less community oriented and you have today's algorithm attention-domination based existence that makes everyone hate themselves and hate everyone else.

The first response I got was "(musician) sucks. He's just a social media influencer."

Like you can't even like your own music because it has to fit some made-up criteria. The whole beauty of music appreciation is enjoying the eclectic diversity in it.

The dummy also ignores the fact that a trait of being a musician today requires having some presence on social media. Just existing on it doesn't qualify you as an "influencer."

Right. I mean, what are the actual criticisms of GTA6?

One thing I will say (with no information on the characters at all), is that every single time someone has said “you understand it is just a beta/preview/alpha/pre-release”, that person has been shown to be unmistakably wrong at release.

That said, I have no idea if “the characters are flat” is an actual problem with their preview, or it is just alt-right child’s complaining about skin tones as they always do.

My personal thing is I just don’t care about gta. Never have, never been my thing but if people are excited good for them. I do not understand people wanting games to be completely different from the last game in a franchise that is so dumb. Like that’s why I played x game, cause I like it

10

u/ZiplockBagOfOregano 3d ago

Same Ive just never liked GTA. LIke I like souls games and theres people out there that are all "iTs HaRd JuSt To bE HaRd, SoUlS SuCkS" Okay? Then dont play it. I dont play games you like and I dont bitch about them, why bitch about games you dont like anyways? Its all subjective.

4

u/Standard_Film_9524 3d ago

I've always loved the look and idea of souls-like games, tried many... Not my cup of tea. I don't hate on anyone for it and wish I actually liked them. I'm also for some reason a no turn based person, I just can't do it for some reason so BG3 is a no for me. I know they are great games and I'm sad I cant enjoy them. It's pretty cool that there are different games for different people 🤷

7

u/Dangerous_Serve_4454 3d ago

It's not dumb to want something more than a copy paste with a new story and new graphics.

It's called innovation. Half life 1 was great and innovative fps shooter. Half life 2 was still a shooter, still the same universe, but they added more lore, better graphics AND a whole physics based gameplay loop that they explored deeply. Amazing innovative live scenes that replaced cutscenes, cool new enemies that changed the way you played, etc.

A sequel doesn't have to be the same generic gameplay loop every time. Why not make the GTA world more of a simulation like we all want it to be? Let me recruit gang members, setup my own dynamic heists, build a criminal empire in a non-scripted way? Something more than drive car to destination and shoot bad guy, watch cutscenes, car chase, go to some pointless shallow mini game like darts or pickleball, then repeat. We have that game 10 times over, we make something innovative.

6

u/Ambitious-Crew-7132 3d ago

You say that but have you seen gta1/2? The game changed a lot over the decades, is it that weird people want something fresh?

3

u/Cuniving 2d ago

I guarantee that if they had taken the game in a completely different direction the exact same people would be screaming that 'this isnt GTA'. Also since the franchise transitioned to 3D it has basically just been incremental change between titles with no major departures bar what the next gen of technology allows - and this game delivers on that the graphical, physics and AI difference between it and gta5 is massive when you actually put the 2 side by side. The issue is that some people spent like 15 years hyping this game to be bigger than god and when its not that they made themselves dissapointed and then theres also the fact that people are just far more out there looking to engagement bait or be contrarian then they were prior to 2015.

Hot take: we should let people criticize and like things.

It’s ok to like things…buuuuut it’s also ok to criticize things. I’ve seen too many people go to the extremes. You can like something and criticize it at the same time. You can also criticize something and understand why people like it. I’m sick of things being a monolith.

4

u/psychorameses 3d ago

It's ok to like and criticize things. But when people extrapolate personal preference into a universal statement like "FF7R had the worst combat ever", then that's where it becomes a problem. It didn't have the worst combat ever, you just didn't like it, and that's ok.

4

u/alienith 3d ago

Honestly part of it is just a selection bias. People trying to argue an objective truth like "FF7R had the worst combat ever" invites much more engagement than somebody personally disliking it. Sites and apps don't differentiate between negative engagement and positive engagement. All engagement is good engagement.

Nobody really cares if I personally don't really like Bloodborne's level/game design. People do care if I say "Bloodborne is objectively a terrible game and you're stupid if you think otherwise".

3

u/RigobertoFulgencio69 3d ago

I think there's a bit of a bias against criticism because it just kills the vibe when the critic can't read the room. They'll go to a place where people specifically went to talk about the product, because they like/are excited about the product, and the criticizers will just bring negativity to a space where it wasn't asked for.

A LOT of it is the "nobody asked" side. There is an ego component to thinking that anyone cares about your opinion enough to warrant leaving a comment, and when you say something negative in an environment where people are enjoying something positively, it just harshes the vibes for no reason at all.

There's a place for (constructive) criticism of course, but I think most people criticizing online aren't being very constructive or aware of the vibe around them.

3

u/Dramatic-Bluejay- 3d ago

preeeeaaaach, so tired of hoping on the internet just to see people complain about people complaining about the most mundane shit. Who cares if someone doesnt like a new video game we all know is going to sell fucking billions. Whats the end goal here?

I get this for criticism of the government or problematic cultural norms, but the amount of criticism people get for simply enjoying a piece of art can be absurd. Friendly discussions over certain problems a game, movie, book, comic, etc. is fine as well. It’s when someone comments criticism like, “this is trash and there’s no way someone else could enjoy it” that I think there’s no reason you can’t just keep it to yourself and let someone else be happy.

4

u/7StarSailor 3d ago

People are passionate about their hobbies. I'm passionate about video games and have been since  the year 2000. I don't only play games, I also like to take a peek behind the curtain and learn about the industry, about gamedev, marketing/publishing, game design etc.

GTA6 with its budget and expected sales and long dev time is a huge event for the hobby so naturally it will be heavily scrutinized. And Rockstar is an industry giant and their game is extremely hyped so of course people are gonna look very closely.

Personally I think it's overall better for us as consumers to be highly critical of a huge corporation like this vs. just praising everything they do and forking over 80$ + tip just because we're on an emotional hype train.

People are gonna look into the mirror, and be like “nahhh, that’s not me.” The great thing is that of you’re not interested in the game, you can totally choose to never play it.

22

u/SolidSnek1998 3d ago

But the problem is they will play it. There are people who will invest hundreds of hours of their time in this game and complain every step of the way.

13

u/andocommandoecks 3d ago

That sounds like their problem tbh. If someone's willingly engaging in a video game that they're not enjoying after they realize they're not enjoying it, they're a dumbass and you can just kinda ignore them.

I just don't really care for GTA games. They're fun for an hour here and there, but that's about where I tap out. I see why people like them as much as they do, they're clearly well made and all that, it's just not my thing.

19

u/Responsible-Donut283 3d ago

Unfortunately people decided to make gta 6 out to be the ultimate game perfect for everyone but it’s just another rockstar game. For me and tons of folk that means it’s gonna be amazing however if you didn’t like previous gta’s or even rdr2 then you probably won’t like gta 6.

It looks unremarkable but I’m not really the person that plays these games. Just seems like some variation of this has already existed for a long time and they’re just adding new minutia for your CPU to chew on like dynamic bird pathing and car engines that need to be oiled.

If I actually listened to what people online had to say bout every single thing I like I would hate it lmao

Reddit especially it seems loves to invite folks who wanna challenge every single take ever for some reason. How do you not get exhausted honestly?

10

u/Tulip_gorgeous554 3d ago

💯its like people are intentionally miserable

3

u/Alarming-Basil2894 3d ago

Like idk why it’s so hard for some folks to just….move on. You don’t like it? Cool play something you like and talk about. Why do you need to linger around the thing you dislike? Let people enjoy it and you enjoy what you like without being miserable. Seems like a lost art these days.

Everytime I see someone say that Jason sounds boring and seems bland I remember the early comments when RDR2 showed Arthur for the firsr time: "Who is this guy, I want John", "Dude has the most generic cowboy voice ever", "He looks boring".

Guys Rockstar has been taking their sweet time with this game, I'm not a fan of everything Rockstar does but one thing is certain, they know how to write characters, y'all are gonna love Jason eventually.

5

u/Jaxonhunter227 3d ago

I hate the loss of physical media, but the price isn't what you should focus on, the physical disks arnt expensive, blank cds are cheap, you're paying all that money for the software which isn't different when it's digital

Way too often online people who don’t like something feel this intense need to somehow justify why it must therefore be bad. It’s okay to just not like something/ not be interested in something. I have zero interest in GTA VI but everyone who does I wish its everything they want and more

6

u/ded-memes-for-life 2d ago

I do not like gta personally, its just not fun for me, BUT that gives me no right to shit on other peoples excitement for the game, only to share that i'm not personally interested if they ask me

10

u/WhyTheHellnaut 3d ago

Being contrarian is so common now that it's taking a normal, lukewarm take is the more contrarian view.

4

u/levus2002 3d ago

Not agreeing with a sentiment thats popular is not contrarian.

Contrarian is intantionally disagreeing with popular sentiment.

You are not contrarian merely for saying gta is a boring game and it looks like nothing changed other than graphics and size between gta5 and gta6.

Reminds me of the discourse around Forza Horizon 6. Game is gorgeous, biggest map by far in the series, they keep nudging the gameplay slighter further toward sim handling with regard to tire traction while still keeping a very arcade over-all feeling.

But it's the sixth game in a series that is iterative rather than transformative. So some people hate Forza Horizon 6 for being a Forza Horizon game. They complain that it doesn't have a dark and edgy story, calling it "festival slop". They complain that it has weekly challenges with exclusive rewards, saying that it's FOMO, but then other people complain when the rewards repeat because I guess that's not FOMO enough. People complain that the live service portion isn't bringing enough all-new content to the game, but the trickle of live service it does provide is at zero additional cost, not even an optional purchase, so there's no "battle pass" or nonsense like that. There is DLC, but that will be for full expansions that come with a new exploration map region and cars.

Like, I totally get that the game isn't perfect. The UI could use some work, and some features are either anemic or outright absent, so the game certainly isn't above all criticism, but the amount of people mad that Forza Horizon is Forza Horizon and that it isn't receiving significant, weekly, free content additions is downright absurd.

That’s sad, anyone even remotely not praising the game is getting downvoted and made to seem like they are crazy…all because they aren’t hyped about a game. It’s just a game lol.

5

u/Raven_Of_Solace 3d ago

If you don't treat this game like the second coming of Christ, you're wrong and not being objective apparently. People are glazing this game for systems that other games have had for ages, acting like it's the first game ever to use them. People are not only excusing things that they tear other games down for, but saying it's to be expected and amazing that this game has these limitations. On top of the quite skimming business practices in play. But, of course, it's the objectively most exciting bestest game ever.

3

u/7StarSailor 3d ago

Also: I thought we've been over this since 2013 but good graphics don't make good games. I don't understand how gamers still get hypnotised by hair physics and lighting when physics and NPC/enemy AI and performance and game balance and the controls and the game being bug free are way more important.

It's the new "Can Do No Wrong" game of reddit. We always have one every now and then.

3

u/7StarSailor 3d ago

I think we have a big case of sunk cost fallacy here. People have been eagerly waiting for this game for a long time now so they really really need and want it to be the most perfect 10/10 game ever because if it's  just a 7/10 the end of the wait would be kinda anti climactic.

And I'm kinda sympathetic towards this, I was the same with Silk Song and Elden Ring. But with Rockstar I just have my qualms. For many reasons.

This is basically the state of gaming discourse these days. All rage. Zero nuance.

…But I have to admit I do think GTA6’s protagonists seemed a tiny bit bland from what we’ve been shown. But also, like the guy said, it is just a preview so I’ll withhold judgement until release.

u/Sashpeto 3d ago

I bought GTA V full price almost on release .

Played like 30min and it didn't rly click with me.

Played couple hours more over the next days and it just wasn't my kind of game .

I have played 1 2 3 vice city and San Andreas multiple times but the modern ones just aren't the kind of games I want to play anymore .

I got 0 interest in GTA 6 because of that .

6

u/Zstrat62 3d ago

Nobody has any kind of problem with you not being interested in a game. What would make you a weird ass loser is if you spend 5 years after its release going to the games fan sub to constantly reiterate how disinterested in the game you are. Those are the people this video is about.

3

u/45MonkeysInASuit 3d ago

I find it so fucking weird when you are on a fan sub and someone is like "I stop listening/watching after [event that happened multiple years ago] but everything about this sucks."

I cannot understand the overwhelming desire to piss on someone's chips for the sake of it.

They have become a lot more almost like a life simulator type of experience since GTA4. Always very technically impressive with cutting edge graphics with interesting stories and worlds but they have lacked a certain game feel to them that can make them less focused on being just pure fun.

9

u/rvasko3 3d ago

I mean, it's not a "downvote if you hate this guy and don't think he should have an opinion" system. It's "upvote if you agree" and "downvote if you disagree." Expressing dislike for a popular game series when people are hyped for the next one is likely gonna lead to downvotes.

Maybe you and "butt hurt fanatics are creating multiple accounts on Reddit" complainer you're defending should just not take it so personally.

Two schools of thought can exist simultaneously.

The first school: Rockstar is a piece of shit scummy company that benefits completely off of selling insane micro transactions, treating their employees and consumers like drones, re releasing the same game for over 13 years at full price with marginal improvements all while telling you you dont actually own the game youve sunk hundreds of hours and dollars into.

The second school: GTA VI looks like a phenomenal game.

Edit because im stupid and roman numerals are hard lmfao

4

u/Vamanas_umbrella 3d ago

Yeah you’re totally right! GTA IV was a phenomenal game back in the day. What are your thoughts on GTA VI?

30 fps or pay 700 for 60fps or wait for pc for unoptimized pc experience. Or pay for 2 of those because you want to play early and then want to play it at its full potential.

Just feels like consoles are a scam at this point. If every game was optimized for pc and everyone built their own tier of PC, exclusivity and drip fed quality would both be decreased for game consumers.

Even good pc games are releasing with quality settings optimized for 1660s for gods sake

The game looks amazing compared to GTA 5. We gotta keep in mind that the gameplay was captured on PS5 too, not some fancy upgraded PC. 2

u/Bububub2 2d ago

I will interject, it isn't because people think being excited is cringe. The reason people are so negative is that is the behavior that is most rewarding on most social media platforms and we are a lot more easily manipulated than we care to admit to ourselves. Yes, reader, some of your negative emotions about stuff was indeed you being manipulated into being negative about something. I know that sounds insulting, but it is true, it is basic human psychology.
