Other comments have named my pet peeves so I'll add making the unlockable outfits look like dogshit and putting the better looking ones in the microtransaction store. Irks me even more when it is a single player game.
122
u/BusinessNonYa 2d ago
Games that haven’t updated their “free” in game cosmetic store in years but their premium macro transaction store receives regular updates. Darktide for example.
15
u/Filer169 2d ago
Holy smokes I read the comment and immediately thought about Darktide but here you are
It's unreal how 95% of unlockable cosmetics look so awful yet for some reason paid stuff finally looks good, it's like the creators of these cosmetics are actually talented but follow some greedy psycho
11
u/ClericOfIlmater 2d ago
And with how their gear textures work it's so so easy for them to make retextures, which are common and fully priced in the paid shop.
→ More replies (3)4
u/EddieFrits 2d ago
Darktide is the worst about it because the base outfits suck and they seem to have forgotten that it's not a free to play game. If they chargef a couple bucks per outfit I wouldn't mind but they want league of legends prices on a game they charge for.
14
u/ZedsDeadZD 2d ago
It only annoys me when the game isnt free. If its a free to play game, I get it. You arent forced to buy and can still enjoy the game without playing.
I think Call Of Duty is actually great in this regard. Warzone is free, tons of unlockable cosmetics that still look good but the really awesome stuff is locked behing a paywall.
What I hate is that the new weapons are always the best/meta weapons and if you buy a cosmetic pack or skips for the season pass, you unlock them quicker.
Everything that gives anyone an advantage at multiplayer just by paying for it. Even unlocking it sooner is bullshit.

Menu system. When I'm at the bottom of a menu and hit down it should go to the top of the menu. I shouldn't have to scroll all the way up to get to the top again. It's a minor gripe, but it is annoying.

If I hit down too many times and it goes to the top of the menu, then hitting up from the top should take me to the bottom. If it's got rollover at the end, it needs to roll back from the start, too. Been playing a lot of Palworld. Fun game. But if I scroll too far down my crafting list, boom, I'm back at the top and now have to scroll down through the whole thing again.

There should also be some way to make gear that isn't useful for your build into gear or resources that ARE useful. It bugged the crap out of me when I was playing Elden Ring and found a really cool sword that wasn't going to do anything at all for my mage build.

Unskipable tutorials.
Oh don't get me wrong. I apriciate tutorials and would never skip them on a first playthrough. But I like replaying games a lot. And on subsequent playthroughs unskipable tutorials, while not a deal breaker, get annoying.
29
u/Hamster-Food 2d ago
I don't even care if the tutorial is skipable, just don't make it boring.
For example , if it's a platformer, have an obstacle course that the game will walk you through if you need it, but you can just rush through if you know what you're doing.

It fucking sucks when the tutorial insists you perform every action before allowing you proceed. "Move by using WASD - give it a shot. Okay, now use your mouse to look around. Great! Try jumping by pressing your space bar." and it just goes on and on.

I hate classic RE3 for this reason. I love RE1 and 2, and those were basically 3D Metroidvanias. You could explore stuff you left behind. I left unexplored stuff behind in RE3 assuming the same, and the game just locked me out of that.
Same happened with Code Veronica disc 2. Now I've accepted it, but I would never not be pissed at them for doing this after the gems that RE1 and 2 were.

It was always complete nonsense and just an excuse for Blizzard to draw up random designs for heroes.
15
u/MyvTeddy 2d ago
My biggest pet peeve with overwatch is the amount of story and lore they have in cinematics, character dialogue and shit but blizzard is far too focused on trying to develop some gameplay loop and content for the pve mode when what they should do is a classic: a goddamn story mode.
The omnic war stuff, reinhardt's arc from glory to duty, the drama between Hanzo and Genji, how Genji met Mercy or Zenyatta, the arc that made Reaper go bad, etc. They got so much material they COULD make all kinds of campaigns and charge us for each one and we'd eat that shit up.
Like seriously, is anyone really asking for a pve mode with customizable builds over a good campaign about literally anything I said? Not to mention it gives them the excuse to make different games too (imagine young Winston's campaign growing up playing like a Mario game or even Portal).

They also marketed the 2nd game, which killed the first, as a necessity because they were not only going to change the format, but they were also going to add PvE
They neglected an extremely popular game for YEARS, changed the format to something no one asked for, and then decided that PvE was way too much work.
They know that we know that they changed it to change monetization. It only took them until marvel rivals for them to stop moving at a snails pace, but the game's community had died down tremendously by then, or moved on to better game.
One of gaming's biggest fumble

As a dad in my 40s, having a game i can pause at any given moment with no prior warning (even in cutscenes) opens up my gaming time. I'll play the shit out of your game if I can do it in 10 minute sections after work before the kids go to bed.

u/Tysiliogogogoch 2d ago
Yep. I only really play single-player games these days, but even then I've played a few games that wouldn't pause when I hit escape. Just... why?!
Add in games that make it difficult to save. I want to save whenever I feel like it. I don't want to have to find a bed to end the day or anything like that.

Anyone else not like when bosses don't have a flinch animation? As in you hit them, health drains but they basically don't have a hit reaction.
50
u/Atlas_Was_ATitan 2d ago
Absolutely! Hate when that happens. Or when you beat the bosses ass but then the cut scene hits and your character has the intelligence of a box gets there shit pushed in and for some reason has the starter weapon and armor equipped in every cutscene.

This, but it also pisses me off when bosses have an exaggerated stun animation that is supposed to be a window where you can do damage to them and the entire fight is just doing timed stuns so you can chip away at their giant hp bar.

u/Gorodrin 2d ago
This is why I love the Soulsborne games. When you do enough damage to a boss and break their poise, you get a satisfying bassy BOOM noise and a window to do a visceral attack to do more damage, so it really feels as if you're beating the breaks off someone.

In GTA V the player has to do a tedious, unskippable early side mission with a tow truck, which then spawns multiple optional missions where the player helps their friend out with the tow truck.
This establishes that the character has access to a tow truck.
When a heist later in the game requires a tow truck… they have to steal a different tow truck, rendering the above setup pointless.
→ More replies (3)7
u/Happiest_Mango24 2d ago
San Andreas does something similiar
One mission has you steal Betsy the combine harvester, yet when you have to destroy the weed later, you don't use her
4
u/PhoenixSheriden1 2d ago
The whole point of the latter mission is to destroy the week, so you get the flame thrower to obliterate it. The combine actually harvests things, ie spits out squares of harvested whatever-you-ran-over. So the weed would be bailed up and ready to throw on a truck, not destroyed.

I would love rewindable cutscenes. As an author and avid reader, being able to go back and look at details in video games, just like I do with books, tv shows, and movies, would be awesome.

u/Karkava 2d ago edited 2d ago
A variation that I see is the dialog log where you can review any lines you accidentally skipped.
There's also a cutscene theater. Which isn't standard, but should be.

Slow forced walking segments while npcs talk at you. I'd rather it just be a skipable cutscene or a loading screen. I dont wanna hold my left stick down for 10min as I get an exposition dump
29
u/TheAngryBad 2d ago
Bonus points if the NPC's speed is slower than your running speed but faster than your walking speed.
Double bonus points if the NPC pauses and stops talking if you get too far away from them, so you're forced to spend the whole time stopping and starting to try and awkwardly keep pace with them.

This is the absolute worst design trend that needs to go. It's especially frustrating since the games that typically have these sections already have an abundance of long ass cutscenes, which is where that dialogue should have been spoken, and it ruins replay value. It ironically makes me feel less immersed in a game because it strips me of my agency.

And when you make one bad choice and it locks you into a certain ending, you break one questline or make one mistake and now suddenly you get the bad ending, or you have to replay a game multiple times doing the same thing to get the best ending, you should always be able to get true ending in first playthrough

over encumbered/full inventory. it just means i spend more time deciding what to drop or crawling towards a merchant/chest than actually playing. it also keeps me from going deeper into dungeons or too far away from towns.
and there's so many ways to adjust it. if picking up everything and selling it would give you too much money reduce sell cost, if having too many potions is a problem make it so the game doesn't pause when inventory is open and so on.
10
u/VillagerWithAQuest 2d ago edited 2d ago
I can see where you are coming from but I will half agree.
When the 'limited inventory' is reflected in the enemies also having limited drops, that's actually my favourite gameplay loop.
But when enemy drop is way too high, or the inventory way too limited, I fully agree.
Similarly when loot rate is just generally too high but you are encouraged to keep it for crafting/trading, that's the worst!

I know one, ESO (Elder Scrolls Online) that made it so everything was a number rather than weight, weapons? 1, materials 1, then they made it so weapons etc sold for a very cheap price, so you couldn't just loot and sell.
Unfortunately they swiftly figured out a way to ruin this, by adding alot more things you'll need as time went by, there was a bank which let you store stuff, not alot, solution? Pay to temporarily increase space, plus another paid option that let you store gathered materials
Edit: irritation I've got there is they made a problem, there's kinda a solution, but for a price

Games with an action you see a LOT but no way to skip.
I'm playing FF7 Rebirth right now. It's excellent. I wish it didn't take so long to start the Chadley battles and that I didn't have to wait 30 seconds after each battle for my team to do their victory poses. I also wish I didn't have to wait 30 seconds after every world Intel event (there's hundreds) for the game to pop up a notice that I just did a thing, which I was purposefully trying to do. Probably wasting a combined couple hours across the whole playtime just waiting for notifications to go away. And they can't be skipped.
4
u/Warcrown11 2d ago
Worst part of the game by far. I don't even so much mind Chadley talking or doing the scans myself but don't stop my gameplay so he can talk. He can talk in my ear while I'm moving.

I despise crafting systems. Just let me go to some shop or NPC and buy the stupid item

That one game that has the most epic trailer ever but the game itself is half ass baked and lies to you about the promised content that was gonna be in the game or throw it behind a paywall

Pop up tutorials for fucking sure, I'm sick of the game flow being hyjacked by infomercials, either create a dedicated training level or let fuckers find out on their own

I know it's needed in some games, but long ass prologues that's immediately followed by a tutorial pisses me of now that I barely have time to play games. I just tried Cyberpunk 2077 after being in my library for a while and I don't have the patience anymore.
Then I tried Sifu. Immediately, I'm in it, punching people. If I played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 today I would've dropped them immediately.

Your pet peeve is my personal pleasure. A pixel platformer with a metal cover is always welcome in my book!

Mine is when a game forces you through the same unskippable tutorial every time you start a new save file, I already know how to walk and jump.

bad 100% requirements
the majority of the time, I go for 100%, so i hate when games do this.
Bad requirements include:
- crap that has no impact on game. You have to learn different fighting styles for 100%, but there's virtually no hand-to-hand combat in the game
- Obvious padding. yeah, you should have to beat this very tedious and uninteresting side mission that was only added to pad out game time
- spend a long time to complete something only for the reward to be terrible, useless, or non-existant
- How the actual f was I supposed to find this without a guide? a collectable hidden in the most obscure place you can think of
- Missables. Would have loved to get 100%, but once I left this area, they won't let me go back for this specific thing. Hope you enjoy playing the whole game again
- Beat this time/get this high score, but the controls are really bad and make it way harder than necessary

When games massively over-do it with the amount of pointless/junk items you can pick up. Can't be used, crafted or sold, just to weigh you down. The amount of hours you can spend overall sorting your inventory can be painful.

Missable content/points of no return that aren’t obvious in the slightest. Makes me want to quit the game right then and there.
Even worse if it’s a game where you can get and do almost everything outside of a few key things that you can just permanently miss in very not obvious ways

When you can’t abandon a fight you’ve started but realized you can’t complete yet.

I got several. None of these are actual deal breakers, but stuff that irks me and could honestly do without:
No pause. I got a family, sometimes i gotta move.
Losing my shit on death. I know souls popularized this mechanic, and I love the Souls games, but it doesn't need to be in freaking everything now.
Lack of optimization. If you're going to release a game on console and PC, it needs to be properly optimized to perform on the former. Nothing pulls you out of the immersion like a frame rate dip or screen tearing. A smooth gameplay experience is far more important than a few extra light rays in a special effect.
Oh! Here's a good one. Real time in-game effects. Night/Day cycles or events tied to actual time. Most people only have specific times of the day they can play. Locking out content because I have to work or whatever is bs.

You would've hated being a gamer in the 90s haha

Highly doubt it, because back in those days your expectations of possible gameplay were limited.
Now? This could either be 3rd person rpg with graphics/visuals of RDR2/WITCHER3/Cyberpunk or straight up 2000 pixel turn-based strategy game which is also top down without zooming in feature.
Completely different things, imho.

That's true. I remember playing GTA III in 2001 and thinking "this is it, we've reached the apex, graphics won't get any more realistic than this" 🙃

Games with only one save file. Or even less than 10 really.
Games that don't let you save anywhere at any time.

You forgot to tickle this one unrelated character’s balls before doing a part of the main quest so now this other character’s quest line is forever broken.
Looking at you, FromSoft.

Characters having a 2 minute conversation with sn NPC during gameplay in an area that you can pass through in 30 seconds. The conversation then ends as Soon as you leave the area, cutting it of and making you miss plot information.
So the next time characters start talking, you stand still, only for the conversation to be short and the area you pass through longer ... so there is an awkward silence as you walk slongside the NPC.

Game is decently challenging all throughout, then the final boss feels just unfair.

I can honestly give games alot of slack but nothing getting on my nerves more than slow text you cant skip. Then your there button mashing to speed it up only to have the text end in you pressing the button to replay everything again.

Unskippable cutscene for a tough boss. After the second time dying I'm tired of watching it over and over
