Capcom has consistently been one of the best developers since the NES. They had a little speed wobble toward the end of the PS3/360 and Xbox One/PS4. Easily the greatest videogame developer of all time.

four bangers sounds way more fun than four hits idk

That “little speed wobble” was bigger than you let on and destroys the whole consistency debate.

There’s a reason people look at 2017 as the rebirth of Capcom. You forget before that, people were calling them crapcom.

They learned that the issue was relying on outside/western studios and refocused their development to be entirely in-house. Now other Japanese studios are doing the same.

Yea, a speed wobble. Maybe 5 years or so. But honestly all of gaming at the time was an absolute shit show.

I think their biggest issue, aside from game quality, was that they were one of the worst publishers when it came to cutting FINISHED content to sell later. Content that was already on the disc.

Half the AAA companies decided they weren't gonna release anything for 5+ years so Capcom decided "Fine, ill do it myself."

6

u/NotItemName 4h ago

All these games took 5+ years to develop, you can't compare dev team with around 300 people with publisher Capcom with around 4000 people

Ubi:?

-3

u/NotItemName 4h ago

Is Ubisoft a "half the AAA companies"?

1

u/Sure-Nebula7909 4h ago

You literally put the least important studio to the top of those big triple a company. Where's Activision, where's blizzard, where's EA? where's t2, hell even Nintendo can't compare the amount of Capcom this year

0

u/NotItemName 3h ago

You literally put the least important studio to the top of those big triple a compan

You put Ubisoft first

can't compare the amount of Capcom this year

We can't really compare just by one year. If you for example compare Bethesda as a publisher with Capcom, for example, output within ~10 years is pretty much the same(Bethesda released a couple of games less with less employees across all the studios under them) I am pretty sure you will find similar number across most of the big publishers

1

u/Sure-Nebula7909 3h ago

Bethesda has many studios while Capcom set their staffs as multiple divisions, besides Bethesda now is under Xbox, Xbox literally released 12 games last year and no one compared ghost of yotei. amount mean nothing

0

u/NotItemName 3h ago

Capcom have multiple studios, they just don't have a name, devs that works on Resident Evil don't work on Pragmata or Monster Hunter

My original comment was regarding 5+ years development cycle, and that Capcom can release a lot of games because it is a big publisher not a single dev team

1

u/Sure-Nebula7909 3h ago

Not so strictly, resident evil team could not be involved but sf6 team literally involved into mhwilds development

And as you can see onimusha wots used some materials from mhwilds, these game now both used re engines mean it is highly versatile to each program

The end, Capcom really has big number on staff but not mean they are too strong, Sega literally has Persona 6 and 4 revival, virtual fighter 6 and stranger than heaven, total war warhammer and alien isolation 2 and crazy taxi in 2027 hell not even consider rumor Sonic 2d game

Well when you’re releasing 4 games and a major dlc, with another 2 games and another major dlc (maybe two) next year that’s still 8-9 projects split between 3,300 people. They are still only the 18th largest video game company by employee count but they are clearly the best in the world right now to me.

4

u/WorldPhysical7646 4h ago

Some AAA companies have same amount of resources and devs it is just shitty moderation that wastes these resources and the talents

Ubisoft got more than 10k employees btw or someshit and look at how poor their output is

1

u/MashedMosha 1h ago

EXACTLY, the quality, quantity, AND consistency. They've been hitting the trifecta every year since 2017, almost 10 years ago, crazy.

Capcom is on a good hot streak right now. Since RE7 they have been doing better every year.

I'm hope sometime next year they announce plans for a return to long dormant franchises such as Ōkami, Darkstalkers, Breath of Fire, and Lost Planet.

u/ByRWBadger 3h ago

So far it looks like 2027 is going to be a more relaxed year for them, and well deserved. Tifa is going to make then plenty of cash while megaman and code Veronica make up the bulk of their year

2

u/eaxis 3h ago

Monster Hunter Wilds ascension is Next year Bro

2

u/ByRWBadger 3h ago

Oh man, that too, though that’s still less of a crazy year than 2026 was.

They have 2 movies coming out in the next 8 weeks!

2

u/Due_Teaching_6974 2h ago

I highly doubt that it's even their whole lineup, they definitely have something aside from Megaman, Veronica and Ascendance for 2027 that they havent revealed yet

2

u/ByRWBadger 2h ago

I would guess a Pragmata story DLC, Capcom fighting collection 3, or something DMC related but not a full release

2

u/EqualPlan4595 3h ago

Okami 2 was already announced funny enough

2

u/GoldunGote 44m ago

Turns out, paying attention to, and putting money into your beloved IPs pays off! *coughs in wishing Konami would give a fuck* yes I know Belmont's Curse is coming out and it does look good.. if its good that'll be fun.. but it's gonna suck waiting another 3-10 years for them to make another castlevania game.

2

u/ThroughTheIris56 36m ago

They announced an Okami sequel a while ago which I'll be very interested to see.

Would also love new Devil May Cry and Dino Crisis games.

u/Duxtrous 4h ago

Capcom has been on a generational run ever since resident evil 7/ Monster Hunter World tbh.

7

u/FrostyPace1464 4h ago

best third party publisher.

11

u/Due_Teaching_6974 4h ago

Dont forget Dragons Dogma 2 Dark Arisen DLC which is coming later this year that aims to fix everything about the game, we might have Cyberpunk 2.0 moment here

4

u/FrostyPace1464 4h ago

dragons dogma wasn’t as bad as c2077 lol

1

u/Due_Teaching_6974 3h ago

of course it wasnt but it was clear so much was cut from the game, they spent 2 whole years making just the DLC alone so I am sure it's going to be even bigger than Phantom Liberty in size

1

u/FrostyPace1464 1h ago

too bad is coming out in a year full of new amazing games lol

1

u/TrustyPeaches 4h ago

Im a bit dubious that it’ll fix everything lol.

I feel like dragons dogma 2 was already the opportunity to fix everything about dragons dogma one that they squandered

0

u/Due_Teaching_6974 2h ago edited 2h ago

I feel you, but you have to remind yourself that they spent almost 3 whole years developing the DLC for this game

it is going to be massive considering Dragons Dogma 2 was also used to prototype Monster Hunter Wild's open world in the RE Engine and a lot of time was spent to meet the games open world demand

now that they don't have to worry about upgrading the engine they should've added back everything that cut from game in those 3 years

1

u/TrustyPeaches 2h ago

Maybe, I haven’t been following it closely enough to tell how much content they’re adding in.

All I’ve seen is the new map which seemed modest enough

4

u/iChieftain22 4h ago

Living proof that gamers still care about singleplayer games, and that they can absolutely be profitable when they’re done right!

2

u/Falchion92 1h ago

I really need to finish RE9 on my Switch 2.

2

u/xtweeter22x Nintendo 1h ago

“Somehow”?

They just like making money; and they know the best way how is to publish top-quality games with unique settings and ideas.

2

u/ButtsFartsoPhD 1h ago

Just give me Viewtiful Joe 3

1

u/Top1RedDead2Hater 4h ago

Can't wait to play Pragmata / Onimusha / RE9 someday, played demo of 2 first and really loved it, I also loved RE7 / like 8 and from previews I should like 9 too, they release too many good games but they are too costly.

Love the Monster Hunter, but the stories doesn't gripe me, all of them are turn based JRPGs right?

2

u/Diseased_Wombat 4h ago

Only the Monster Hunter Stories spin-off series is turn-based. The mainline Monster Hunter Games (all of the numbered entries, World, Rise, and Wilds) are basically boss rushes. You fight a monster like you would fight a boss in Dark Souls, but both you and the monster are more mobile than in Dark Souls. I’m not awake enough to explain this properly haha. You get the idea, right?

2

u/Top1RedDead2Hater 4h ago

Oh yeah I only played the Rise / World so far and tried Wilds demo, I was purely talking about Stories. I think Steam only has MH Stories 1-3 and Rise / World / Wilds

1

u/FrostyPace1464 4h ago

it was for me! amazing game, world was better though.

1

u/JoeRe9uiem 3h ago

Ayyyyeee... Give Capcom, Jumping Flash! I want that series back.

1

u/Hendwreck 44m ago

Megaman 12 comes out in November 🎊

1

u/_has-been_ 3h ago

And don’t forget Street Fighter 6 is the best fighting game this era. And one of the best ever.

2

u/BrrVlad 3h ago

yeah no lmao game isnt even top 3 in the series

1

u/Anubra_Khan 2h ago

Dragons Dogma 2: Dark Arisen 🔥

0

u/Peeka789 4h ago

Im not a fan of 3/4 of these games, but im glad some companies are committed to delivering consistent, non-cynically made, single-player games.

0

u/SpyroManiac36 3h ago

Solid but nothing breaks the 90+ score

1

u/IdleSitting 1h ago

That's still pretty good, but I'm also the type of person who's fine with a 60-70 score on a game

-6

u/Kasta4 4h ago

Now they just need to figure out how to optimize their mainline Monster Hunter titles.

1

u/Creepy_Ad5124 4h ago

Yeah its a shame about that, All their other games are like some of the best optimization in all of gaming, so Idk why Monster Hunter runs like shit

1

u/Kasta4 4h ago

They just bit off more than they could chew with applying the RE Engine to an "open world" setting. Monster Hunter Wilds' performance is a lot better than it was at launch thanks to their efforts but I really hope they learn their lesson for the next release because it killed a lot of hype for the game.

1

u/Diseased_Wombat 4h ago

The next release is 100% going to run better at launch. The portable series games (which is what the next one is gonna be) tend to focus less on the environment and scale, and more on the combat. They usually have much more wild monster designs and MUCH more difficult fights.

I mean, look at World and Rise. World was a main series game and it focused on the immersive experience of hunting and portraying the monsters as animals. Rise, on the other hand, was much more similar to old-gen games and revolutionized the combat with Wirebugs, making hunters faster and flashier than ever before

3

u/Kasta4 4h ago

Yeah I expect the portable games to be more optimized, I should have specified that I mean the mainline titles.

World was also a mess at launch, and now with Wilds having an unoptimized launch it makes me concerned for the next mainline MH game.

0

u/FrostyPace1464 4h ago

I played mh wilds day 1 on ps5. Completely fine!

You must mean PC.

3

u/Kasta4 4h ago

Yep, the PC version was absolutely abysmal. Hopefully they get it figured out for the next release.

1

u/DegenerateCrocodile 4h ago

It was not “completely fine” on PS5 at launch. Hell, it still needs some more work to this day.

-3

u/Organic_Manner6847 4h ago

Company has 300+ people per game, they are using as many people for a single game as other studios have IN TOTAL.

So I am actually not that surprised. It makes me more or less wonder why other studios can't do the same even though they also often have 1k people working for them.

1

u/TheDudeBeto 2h ago

A core team of 300 is actually on the lower end for modern AAA development. Major titles like God of War, The Last of Us, and Spider-Man often employ 400 to 600 core developers, while massive projects like GTA, Cyberpunk 2077, and Assassin's Creed can scale to over 1,000. Considering this scale, Capcom's team efficiency is impressive.

0

u/Organic_Manner6847 39m ago

Dude, Santa Monica Studio behind GOW has roughly 300-400 employees. That alone tells me you don't know anything about the actual numbers.

As for last of us, they credited 1336 people in the first game and 2169 in the sequel.

You also list studios which often work on a single game at the same time. Insomniac (Spiderman) worked just on that game, Rockstar and CD Projekt do the same.

Not to mention that more people doesn't mean better games. I know, stereotype "bigger number = better" but that's BS. And Capcom proofs that, they work on 6-8 games per year at the same time while ressourcing their team members, resulting in games often having just 300 people working at them while others work on other stuff. Take a guess why they could work on RE7 and 8 at the same time while also working on DMC5, Monster Hunter, Umbrella Corps, Revalations 2, RE2r and SF5.

Show me ANY of your mentioned studios which were able to do the same.
