Beginner looking for VNs with great writing, themes, mystery/horror, and little to no romance

I’m a beginner when it comes to VNs, and I’m not really sure what I should read next. The problem is that I’m not very interested in the usual VN tropes.

A lot of the VNs I see seem to put a huge emphasis on romance or harem stuff, usually with an all-female cast and a male MC where all the girls want to be with him. I don’t actually hate harem stories two of my favorite anime are the Monogatari series and The 100 Girlfriends, and both are technically harems so if you know a VN with a similar kind of dynamic, I’m open to recommendations.

What I’m really looking for is something unique, with great themes and strong character writing. Preferably something on the longer side and without H-scenes. I’m a huge fan of mystery, horror, and thrillers, so those are a big plus.

Here are the VNs I’ve read so far, ranked from best to worst:

Umineko

Higurashi

Steins;Gate

The House in Fata Morgana

AI: The Somnium Files

Danganronpa

Fate/stay night

Ace Attorney

Zero Escape

I’d really appreciate any recommendations, especially if you think there’s something that matches my taste

Question VNs that do auto advance well?

A frustration I've been running into with the last two VNs I've read (hundred line and fsn) is that both of their auto advance modes are trash. Simply being that the auto advance is the same timing for non voiced and voiced text and only in the latter it waits for the voice line to play before proceeding with the same auto timing. This makes it so when you tune the timing for a voiced line to progress well the non voiced lines are sped through at an insane speed since they're timed off when the text finishes displaying on screen. It's really annoying how in HL I can set auto during a voiced segment and it proceeds well then as soon as it ends it starts blazing through text so fast and the only way to remedy this would be to make the text appear slower which is its own downside.

So what VNs are able to keep a good cadence between both of this while staying fully in auto mode?

Feel free to join our community focused on talking about japanese media, including visual novels!

Upvotes

Hello! We have a Discord community for people who enjoy all kinds of Japanese media, including anime, manga, light novels, games, and of course, visual novels.

We like to hang out, chat about what we're playing or reading, watch anime together, host VN readalongs, game nights, and other community events. In the past we've also done giveaways, Secret Santa, talent contests, and even partnered with Frontwing for a Kinsenka giveaway. We are also partnered with Fuwanovel as well as VTuber Purin Lapin.

We also have "Media of the Month" discussion channels, where everyone can talk about a featured anime, manga or light novel, game, and visual novel each month. We are also planning to start watching anime together every weekend starting next friday (the anime to watch has yet to be determined).

If you're looking for people to chat with about visual novels or Japanese media in general, we'd love to have you join us!

Invite link here.

Hi friends! What do you think?

Shop Crush is a mysterious shop simulator and hybrid VN with psychological horror elements, set in the early 2000s.

In this hybrid visual novel, you run a small thrift shop, get to know your customers, figure out what they really want, and decide what to put in front of them. Every customer has their own personality, preferences, and hidden motives - and it’s up to you to figure them out.

Behind each customer is a small psychological mystery waiting to be uncovered. Read their behavior, make the right calls, and balance profit against customer trust as you try to keep the shop running for one more day.
