Post and comment submissions require that your profile has at least 100 karma

The best way to rack up enough karma for new accounts is by commenting and posting in the bigger subs like r/askreddit, r/aww, etc...

I'm looking to reprogramming the automod to allow newer accounts to post soon, but until then, I've at least figured out why it keeps filtering so many of you so you can remedy it on your end

we need more mods

realizing that the auto mod has been nuking so many posts without even letting us moderate them has been eye opening. it's also led to me realizing that I'm literally the only one that's moderating all 52,000 of you outside of the shitbot. all others have been inactive.

please shoot me a modmail if you're interested in becoming an active moderator for our lovely vultures

I’ve been cooped up for 3 months due to heat intolerance from medication I take. I was finally able to go out today and found a big whitetail antler. I’m surprised nothing chewed it up all summer.

ID help Need Help Identifying Skull

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi everyone - my puppers got into this skull this afternoon. This picture is the underside of the jaw (sorry I couldn't get a better one as I was trying to make sure I got it out of the yard). It looked like an Opossum but I wanted to check with the community here before I got and get her a rabies booster. Could it be a bat?

advice or help Where do I dump the water?

So I got some full skulls a week ago and cleaned as much off of it as possible. My problem now is that I don’t know where to dump all of the juice at. My backyard is small and I have close neighbors, my front yard is public and close neighbors. My outdoor drain is right next to my ac which has to run all day because of the heat… idk what to do. Help?

advice or help Frozen bird wings

Hello! I found some small species of bird a while ago, say 2-3 months and wanted to preserve the wings so I snipped them off and froze them. I was wondering if the process for drying/pinning will still be the same? Just defrost, pin, borax? Or is there a different way I need to do things because they’ve been frozen for a while?

Thank you in advance

Really cool (and old! Circa 1910) Walrus skull was gifted to me a couple of weeks ago by a museum I work for. Come with full provenance as well as a fragment of tusk.

advice or help Has anyone ever thought about preserving their wisdom teeth here?

In late September, I am going to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed (they are kinda coming in wonky and are causing me pain 💔)

I wanna see if I can get my hands on my own wisdom teeth (if the surgeon even lets me) and preserve/clean them to the best degree, how would I go about doing that in the first place?

It would be really neat to me to have them in a mini jar or something

Working on a common buzzard skeleton for my friend. Here are the feet.

One of the phalanges is missing, so we're replacing it with a small round bone fragment from a different bird, won't be very noticeable 😊

advice or help My dermestids just keep on munching--on what, i'm not sure

This is a question related to Dermestid beetle eating habits. Recently I found a butcher who sold me a bunch of bones from a cow he slaughter. The butcher's client didn't want any of the large bones which are typically EXCELLENT for stock and the marrow is supposed to be delectible (I'm vegan so that is not on my menu!)

In between skeleton cleanings I feed my colony these bones that I remove excess fat and dry over several days. Here's the point: these beetles are still munching parts of bones I fed them several months ago. In one photo you can see a small white pocked boney material a little bigger than a quarter. The larvae are still doing a number on it. I get that they will clean out the marrow but they seem to be doing a number on parts of the bone where I don't see any meat (clearly) and there doesn't seem to be any cartilage or tendons either. What up with that?

advice or help Too late to macerate?

Post image
100 Upvotes

Hello!

I live in AZ and the temps have been over 105° pretty much daily. I found this little guy completely intact in my backyard, and I'd really love to try and save his perfect lil skull. I had the thought to put it in a maceration bucket to try and finish off the remaining soft tissue, but I'm worried that it's mummified too far and the bones are too frail/dry and might disintegrate in the water?? I don't know if that's even a thing tbh I just don't want to ruin the skull because it's so incredibly intact it looks amazing. I'd really love to glue the skull to a pendant and resin it but I'm not sure if it's too brittle after the heat damage to even be able to withstand preservation attempts. Am I better off just leaving it mummified? Any advice is so appreciated!!

found a thing I found this skull and mandible in the woods recently. After some research, I think it might belong to a turkey vulture?

I noticed that the upper beak portion hinges above the nasal cavities. I don't believe it is supposed to naturally be like that, but it also seems incredibly uniform to be a break, down to the shape of the edges on both sides (photos 5,6,7). I'm just curious about that.

I plan to promptly return the skull to the woods I found it in since I live very close and I know I cannot keep it by law. It was just easier to examine it at home since I'm a curious mind and this is a super sweet find.
