Maybe a false alarm from the monitoring system, maybe someone smelled something and thought it was a fire, maybe someone saw something they thought was a fire... could have been a dozen things.

When they get a call, they respond as if it's the real thing. When we had a little kitchen fire years ago, my wife called and told them it was a small fire that was already out. Within minutes, the whole damn fire rescue department was in front of our house, plus an ambulance and two cop cars. When I asked if that was a little over-reacty of them, they explained that they don't take chances. And yes, over-reacty is a real word.
